What did you do with your 996 today?

Thursday, took the car to Witney Motor Show for the evening, hello again to those that were there :)

Today, just got back from Autofarm, following a headlight polish, to bring the lights back from yellow, to new! Can't believe the difference it has made. Very happy with the results. I know, after watching it be done, that this is something I could have done myself, but I didn't have the tools really. Could have gotten hold of them, but glad someone with more experience did it for me. Will leave a week for the wax/polish they used to setle, then apply a plastic UV coating protection. Any suggestions?

Just bought a TopGear Mild exhaust system and their 200 cell cat. My current system is now 17 years old and needs to be done before the MoT so might as well get a decent set up fitted.

Despite having only had her back for a little over a week I had to get the tools out today to swap out the starter motor.

Simple job made difficult due to access. Pulling the Alternator really helped.

Here today in WA its mid winter a cool 22Deg C so out in the car for a drive round the Swan Valley and Perth hills, sun roof open and not a cloud in the sky![:)]. Got to be better than a UK winter anytime. Just had a 4 wheel alignment done all good and drives like it should at $88 (£50) its a bargain and yes it was done right as well on same equipment as Porsche they do race set ups as well.

Yes I did my starter, was a fiddly job a bit like you see the vets checking the inners of a cow out on the Tv. But on the plus side it made a big difference to starting the car when warm which was the result I wanted!

Two new tyres, meaning the old Bridgestones from the front are now two new Mich PS4s, matching the rears!

I know there is a placebo effect, but it did feel better on the road too, but as I think I stated in the Tyres thread, when we investigated the slow pressure loss, the tyres were 7 years old and cracking in the treads.

Next for the windscreen chips to be done, before Beaulie at start of August

Detailing yesterday and today (well, as best I can). The usual snow foam, rinse, two bucket wash method, rinse and towel dry (by dragging or flapping rather than rubbing). Then a Meguiars Quick detailer cover, as it was waxed last time out. Poor boys world wheel sealant back on the wheels too, along with meguairs tyre gel.

Also as the weather is getting hotter and its a cab, I got round to finally applying the 303 (UV protectant and dirt/dust resistor) to the internal dash, doors and I even did the seats, and the blue leather has come up a really nice darker blue. It's a bit shiny, but gave the cabin a new look. I applied to the cloth each time, I didnt spray directly on to the leather.

I went to apply the Stonechip covers (that also has a strong UV property according to Aliath) but made a pigs ear of it, as you can see from the finger prints. If anyone has done this on a 996 headlight, Id appreciate some tips, or for you to do it :) lol For now, I have put a couple of coats of 303 on the lights to stop any new yellowing. I still cant believe the difference having the lights sanded and polished makes.

Today will be taking the wheel sealant off (I allow it to dry overnight) and trying out Meguairs Plast RX for the rear lights and strip. A test area yesterday, did take a level of dull off and some minor swirls (that you could only see up close and really looking)

Presume you sprayed some water with a couple of drops of washing up liquid on the film and headlight? you wont do it if they are dry and it will end up a wrinkled mess.

Unfortunately, I did do it dry! Didn't see a detailed set of instructions that came with it. Aliath were very good and sent me out another though ad am now waiting until I have a quiet house and time to do it, with no distractions

Not today as such, but whilst having the service done a couple of weeks ago, decided to have front rad grills fitted by Kev Waterhouse at DW Performance. An excellent and smart job.

I think they look very smart and no cutting of the original veins 👍🏻

Have already been effective with rubbish/leaves being caught

It's a job, I want to do, and have the grills for (well, a large sheet of similar metal to be cut). Are these metal or plastic do you know?

Looks good :)

I've just ordered some of the Aliath films for my headlights as am just starting on restoring mine - they are showing very little signs of yellowing, but there is some beginning to appear and also a few scratches. Am also ordering the 3M restoration kit and will do the sanding and polishing myself. On a related note, the Meguiars Plast-RX does have some effect, but it only seems suitable for really fine, shallow scratches on the plastic.

Great day out at the show at Helmingham Hall in Suffolk with everyone from R12 Hard top on and air-con running.

Not today, exactly, but took it back to RPM over the weekend for it's MOT and some work under warranty (starter motor keeps sticking, they are going to rebuild it). Some nice countryside on the way, as I drove through Oxon, Bucks and Herts :) Got to have a look at it from underneath, as I took it to one of their Saturday Surgeries where they can advise on any work or you can ask them for their thoughts on things etc. Technician was very pleased with the way the car handled and steered and said it was a nice tight example of a 996. Underneath was spotless. No signs of dirt, oil, or leaks of any kind and I was surprised at the amount of plastic guards covering a lot of under body too, which was nice to see.

Hope to pick it back up next weekend, but it's odd. I don't drive it daily, but miss seeing it in the garage when I go out to the booze fridge, lol.

Still, I can at least make use of the space to re-arrange tools, cleaning kits and other things that need a tidy up or new home.

Well the weekend went well, we travelled up to Staffordshire on Friday night and settled in (That means food and beer were tested) at the hotel. Then on Saturday after breakfast we drove North West into Snowdonia National Park. Weather was hit and miss but by the time we got to Blaenau Ffestiniog it was raining so we stopped for lunch and decided on a narrow gauge railway trip on the 'Ivor the engine' line heading for Porthmadog. Following on from this the fog was still wet so we diverted East to the Horseshoe pass and stopped for tea at the Pondorosa cafe. They had recent hill fires here but it was all reopened despite the fire brigade still being present in numbers on the mountain. At this stage the sun came out making for a lovely afternoon Following this we headed back to the hotel on great roads (sweeping and quiet) we passed the The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which looked amazing in the sunshine a feat of engineering for sure. Today we came home via Monmouth valley and Tintern Abbey before the busy drive East up the M4 back to home. The 996 went very well in the mountains and was a pleasure to drive. I saw as many GT2 as I did speed traps (4) in fact I saw 4 x more modern GT2 than I did other 996 (4 - 0)
