964 RSR For Sale ... ?

ORIGINAL: carreraboy

So did the silver car at the start of this thread sell?

It's up for auction at Bonhams....

http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21396/lot/40/?page_anchor=r1%3D45%26m1%3D1

Lots of discussion about this car on the Facebook page. Where I'm once again in trouble because I suggested that since the guy has had bonnet pins fitted, and it comes with a spare set of wheels and hood that it might have been tracked on a regular basis...
And it would be a major concern to me given it had an engine rebuild early in its life that it might have been thrashed.
But as Jason pointed out, that's what these cars are built for etc... but we were looking for reasons why it's not sold for so long and is now in an auction where you aren't able to ask the same sort of questions of the owner and have to resort to some detective work.
Cheers
Rick

Naturally a 3,8 RSR in high tune only has a limited track life as these were race engines. Guess your Lazy Turbo Boy is the way ahead Rick for massive power and reliability that's why you are keeping it ..... aren't your Turbo's situated underneath with intercooler to allow the rear lid to not have a permanent spoiler, and give that lovely clean look?

lol [:D] cant take you anywhere......I'd have thought being tracked is an advantage for anyone who wants to buy it!

Did I miss something. The car at the start of the thread seemed to be a car built on a factory supplied RSR body shell, but the car in the auction appears to be a genuine 1 owner 3.8 RS. These aren't the same cars.

LOL I wondered when someone would notice.....people are getting slow around here these days [:D][:D]

was gonna say...!!

Anyway... my French Porsche sourcing chap is at the auction... he agrees with my guesses on the likely history, but he says lots of interest been shown on the car already and it'll be interesting to see what it sells for. But he always has a mandate from his buyers to acquire cars like this and all he'll admit to me is that he won't be bidding on it. So we'll see.... let's hope for a strong result!

3.8RS at Bonhams....

WOW

Sold at 235,000 euro

A HUGE surprise when you consider that of the previous 39 cars auctioned before it only one was over estimate and every other car was either at the bottom entry estimate or as in most cases waaaaay below.

4 people bidding on it....unlike just about every other car. Longest auction of all the lots...dragged out!

A poor auction all round...not surprising though for a Friday night in Belgium??!!

.......then they offer it to the next lowest legitimate bidder. Coys must have me on their 'Friends & Family' favourite number [:D]

Yup it sold. 4 people bid it strong to 200k euro then 2 kept going until the sale price. Watched it live :)

That seems strong money to me?

Funny how Thomas had the black 3.8 for years and to our amazement the asking price seemed to jump every 3-6 months that it remained unsold.....that car obviously now looks like a great deal.......can't be too far off a top here with prices at this level? [:D]

As I note on the Facebook page... at the end of the day, there are only 55 (Tom says 51?) of these cars... there are 1500 '73 RS's... 60ish '73 RSRs? (correct me?)... the latter are Euro 500k all day...
The question you have to ask is can you foresee there being 55 collectors in the World who are so Porsche that they are trying to collect the set?
Admittedly Des-hat-on... but if someone asked you to put a value on the cars without knowing anything about them... and they told you a normal 64 RS is Euro 100k (?) for a nice one, the 73 RS is 300k, the 73 RSR is 500k, then whats the price for the widebody limited edition directly related to it's race-going sister then to be honest, you'd estimate 200k-400k. Clearly the market hasn't previously supported that price... but this car wasn't exactly a virgin.
Sure, it's a one-off price, and it's way more than we think this car was really worth right now, but over time? Is this the top? Probably short term but I doubt it longterm.
All IMHO
Rick

I can see where the 51 v 55 confusion comes from. I have an official factory letter with the history of my RSR which states that 55 RS 3.8s were built and 51 RSRs, so you're both right depending on which car you're talking about.

Some examples of the 70's RSR's have sold at closer to the million mark. Prices have taken a sharp rise in the 90's cars in quite a short period, but I doubt long term this is the high. Although it's niche 50ish cars to satisfy all potential worldwide interest is not a lot to go around.

Elephant in The Room

Factory Body shell car not an original Factory build ... so how does the 55 Build work here?

Des the car currently being discussed was the car sold at auction, which was a 1 owner genuine factory built 3.8 RS. 1 of the 55 built. See my previous post (a few up in this thread). The car at the auction is not the same car at the start of the thread that you refer to.
