No racing driver will want to be number 2 to their team mate, but any driver sitting in a car outside of the top 4 or 5 teams will prefer to be a number 2 in one of those top cars, rather than a number 1 in a car that is going to give little opportunity to fill their trophy cabinet with podium trophies. So that's more than half the drivers. Sometimes being a number 2 is by ability or experience and sometimes there may be contract clauses, but a driver will go to a team hoping to impress (good on Perez for having a go - better than being in awe of his senior team mate). For example, Paul Di Resta was disappointed to have been overlooked in the driver seat merry-go-round at the end of last season. The rumour is he was trying to get a look in at Ferrari. Now that would definitely have been a number 2 seat, and probably a short contract. But statistically, he'd have more success there than where he is now. Having a definite number 1 and 2 driver can sometimes create the most harmonious environment. Ferrari rarely have to deal with disputes on track because everything is clear. Teams over the years that have employed 2 world champions or potential world champions, for example, have often had very damaging rivalries to deal with. I'm not a fan of having a definite number 2, but having been a big Schumacher fan for many years at Ferrari, i've watched it for some time and had to accept & get my head around it and can see what comes out of it. I'd still prefer the drivers to have an equal shot at every race though but you've got to earn that as the championship unfolds. (Now i'm a Hamilton fan and tend to get behind a driver rather than any particular team). Webber was a good number 2 and he wasn't always qualifying or bringing the car home 1 position behind Vettel, so his abilities vs Vettel's kept him at number 2, in the best car. No disrespect to Webber. He can't go anywhere else on the grid and have the same opportunity. Vettel clearly doesn't fear the team's authority and if both driver's have been asked to turn their engines down and the one behind doesn't do that and closes the gap while the leader has been told to back off, then that is a hollow victory IMHO but the team has to look at how they enforce authority. Massa, Barichello and Webber etc. wouldn't leave a good seat over such disputes. The lack of certainty of re-signing him, plus the opportunity at Porsche, plus the strength of his team mate Vettel, would've lead him to take his destiny into his own hands. Credit to Massa for outperforming Kimi when he was probably considered the number 2. He almost won the 2008 world championship ahead of Kimi and 1 point behind Hamilton, and no doubt contributed to the the exit of Kimi before the end of his contract. So i'd say more than half the drivers on the grid would happily walk into a number 2 seat at a higher performing team than their own. I'm a big formula 1 fan, but the induced tyre degradation and it's affect on racing has been extremely frustrating, with the drivers' and engineers' sole focus being on nursing the tyres home. It seems Pirelli is opting for the harder of their compounds for the next few races, and in Canada the guys could push on the rubber, so hopefully it is coming good again.ORIGINAL: Andy FaganAbout half of them I'd guessORIGINAL: MrDemon does anyone want to be no. 2 in F1 ?

But why the Black Nuts?[X(]ORIGINAL: MrDemoncannot make my mind up. I have been highly recommended to these guys by a very meticulous car owner and have requested a price [ORIGINAL: MrDemon agree, mine has the black finish though on the R lol might get the Spyder wheels redone over winter in the high gloss finish though as they have a few chips
Hopefully the change to black ones is because they have a corrosion resistant finish?ORIGINAL: daro911All 991's & 981's have black nuts must be a faze fashion change from past decades of silver nuts[ORIGINAL: jdpef356 But why the Black Nuts?[X(]]Â Â
Not sure about that as they have used black finish before back in the 1970 & 80's I have never had the rusty nuts syndrome simply because I never have my wheel cleaned with anything stronger than a warm bucket of soapy H20. Never use any acid based alloy cleaners or jet spray the wheels to death as most hand washes favour [&o]ORIGINAL: flat6Hopefully the change to black ones is because they have a corrosion resistant finish?ORIGINAL: daro911All 991's & 981's have black nuts must be a faze fashion change from past decades of silver nuts[ORIGINAL: jdpef356 But why the Black Nuts?[X(]]
Bloody hell!! That was a post and a half. Good work professor. Tom and I gave mine a thorough clean this afternoon ready for our trip to Silverstone tomorrow. Decided to keep the car out ready for a v early dart in the morning. It's now raining - unbelievable!
Still, Lewis is on pole. Tom is 10/10 excited and I must concede his Dad is both very proud and also quite looking forward to it!

Have a good day tomorrow at Silverstone. I hope you wont be entering a muddy car park! Or have the sorted all that out now? Should be a good race! Di Resta's car was found to be underweight and he goes to the back of the grid from qualifying 5th. In the same interview they've started to talk to him again about potential moves now that there's a vacant Red Bull seat for next season... http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/23113828
You, Brian and Rob should have a concours competition!ORIGINAL: daro911Not sure about that as they have used black finish before back in the 1970 & 80's I have never had the rusty nuts syndrome simply because I never have my wheel cleaned with anything stronger than a warm bucket of soapy H20. Never use any acid based alloy cleaners or jet spray the wheels to death as most hand washes favour [&o]ORIGINAL: flat6 Hopefully the change to black ones is because they have a corrosion resistant finish?

De Resta disaster! Poor sod, what an absolute shame. Going in the Spyder, fingers crossed over the parking - PEC wouldn't let me use a spare space there (of which there were LOADS on telly today) so next time they want to borrow a car of mine we know what the answer will be. [8|]
Go in another car don't abuse the Spyder when its all mint and immaculate[ORIGINAL: kitchens Don't think mine will win any concours competitions ,going to a car show in a field tomorrow and RAIN is on the cards [:'(] and it is immaculate as spent several hours doing all the wheels and inner arches last week. One of the helicopter shot for about thirty seconds quite clearly showed the car park outside the PEC Silverstone to be less than a quarter full![&:].
