Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

ORIGINAL: daro911 My brother and I picked this rare Porsche up today and apart from the disappointingly weak sounding bespoke PSE that can hardly be heard [] its a great piece of kit and just one of 19 UK cars of which there appears to be opnly 12 around today Ignoring the beautiful leather everything you can touch interior is she any more exciting to drive than a Spyder ... Our jury is definitely out but as a very rare exclusive Porsche she is totally unbeatable[8D]
Hopefully he will drive the car unlike it's last owner! (Did he ever drive it?)
Yes he will but not by a great margin bearing in mind he managed just 1000 miles in 32 months with his / now mine Spyder[:D] He is definitely more collector than driver as I probably did 150 miles of the 1000 on the Spyder when I took it over and even today we split the 100 mile journey 50/50 :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
Not sure I totally agree with collector/speculators. This was reinforced by seeing 12+ CGTs underneath Porsche Reading just begging to be driven. Most of them get driven once or twice per year - To a service and MOT then back again. How many 918s will go this way ?

Yes he will but not by a great margin more bearing in mind he managed just 1000 miles in 32 months with his / now mine Spyder[:D] Jenson Button appears to have done nearly all the 328 miles in his 12 month ownership and next owner didn't do a single mile He is definitely more collector than driver as I probably did 150 miles of the 1000 in his Spyder before I took it over and even today we split the 100 mile journey 50/50 :ROFLMAO: Congrats to your brother[:)] As you've done a few miles behind the wheel and have already become accustomed to PDK in your new Spyder, how does the transmission and power compare? Will you get another chance to drive it to tell us how the handing compares?[;)]

Thanks flat6. I would need to drive them back to back because behind the wheel today the PDK and power delivery are too samey to judge. Did the Speedsters 408 bhp feel awesome compared to our 320bhp not really. Does the same gen pdk feel asny quicker or smoother not really The steering has a lovely weight to it and the classic 911 old school jiggle and while the bespoke PSE was disappointing compared to the Spyders on the plus side the PASM set up -ride was that much more user friendly and very pleasant indeed The adaptive electric sports seats are awesome and you can really make them hug as good as the carbon buckets if you so desire and can be made to suit/fit all shapes and sizes If he takes the car to some Porsche shows this summer he has already asked if I don't mind sharing the miles behind the wheel so more comparisons can and will be made weather permitting of course [8D] Ceramic brakes are very impressive too so I can understand Mr.D's love affair with those pieces of kit

I hear you Nick. I'm not one for car collecting; my Porsche have to work to earn their keep. However, with a car like this 997 Speedster, it will probably change hands amongst people who view it as a collectable item and anyone who buys one with the intention of giving it a fair amount of use better have in their mind to keep it. It isn't mechanically different from the GTS, so that is a better choice for 'use, abuse and still be fairly collectable in the future' I reckon, and still give the same thrill. The thing with the Speedster is that is collectable already, to those who show an interest in it whereas the GTS will (may) be collectable later. As for the Carrera GT and 918, yeah it would be a waste for those cars to rarely turn a wheel. Let's face it, the 918 isn't for looking at. It looks purposeful and doesn't belong is a glass garage. It doesn't have the visual appeal of an Italian supercar and i'd say the thrill of owning one comes from driving it as nothing else will drive like it. Maybe some of the people who can afford these cars don't have the time drive them as they jet-set around the globe[8|]. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2536391/The-motorhome-costs-8-000-A-NIGHT-Lavish-tour-bus-used-F1-aces-Jenson-Button-Jacques-Villeneuve-transformed-luxury-getaway.html

I expect you won't have spent much time in Sport Plus mode on your first tentative drive to get that six figure car home[;)] When I drove a GTS it was giving neck-snapping acceleration as it slammed in each gear and a little wheelspin too such was the torque. To be fair, i've only driven a PDK Spyder around PEC, which was very fast but I don't remember being 'scared' by it. The X.51 engine is fairly docile until the revs are raised and kept raised throughout the gear changes and then you see more of the extra power and torque. But if you do that you'll soon be driving at blur speed and your brother may never let you drive it again[:D]

Certainly a nice and very rare car. Don't hink I have seen one in the flesh. I do like the wheels. I wonder do they all have the chequered flash crutch on the seat? Or was that a Jenson Button touch?

P.S. Before I put my foot in it, i'm not implying that your brother is a global jet-setter like Jensen Button Daro! The point I was making is that I think the 997 Speedster isn't for driving weekly, given what it costs for a 997. As such, it's a collector's piece. On the separate point, I doubt the Carrera GT and 918 owners have much time to drive those cars but if I had one, i'd drive it every weekend I got chance to[8D]. And mileage probably does these red and yellow collecables no harm at all[;)] Not sure about how mileage will affect the white one long term but its at 23000 miles now[:-]

Cecil, that picture was taken at exactly the wrong time []

Jenson's motor home was quite something. Last vehicle I drove that size carried 80 passengers! Speedster is lovely. It has to be a collector's dream, I agree with the prof - if you want a car like that to use regularly you buy the one with a GTS badge on the back. Very special.

John the 997 Speedsters all came with identical spec and all you had to tick was Carrera White or Pure Blue. Every other factory option was then chucked into the mix as part of the unique package

I know, half a second later and he could say he'd just passed them!
A couple of times the same cars caught me on my in lap. Half of me said should I go for one more hot lap and see if I could hold them off, but an in lap is an in lap when I think i'm ready for a break, so... Next time, next time [:)]

I think that is sometimes better on these collectors cars as you don't end up with varying specs and as a collector you don't want to have to worry that yours might turn out to be an unpreferred spec. Speedster PDK only Sport Classic [classically] manual only No debate to be had[;)]

flat6 A couple of times the same cars caught me.
EFA Racing drivers book of excuses chapter 2. [:D][:D][:D] Hope your boy doesn't have a go kart event that day, we need to get back out there together.
