Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

Yup - I had it done to mine - eporsch in Chobham did it for me - I supplied them with the fitting diagrams which Porsche Byfleet got for me - I still have a copy of them somewhere - let me know if you want me to dig them out for you?

Nooooo..... wonder if you realise what you have just started...!!!! In a word - I think the important bit that few people will argue with are Spyder wheels Then, probably Bucket seats - although these are more down to the individual. I think that buckets do appear more popular (but not looking to start a war)... if you like heated seats then you will prefer the sports seats over the buckets (just to give both sides of the story). the final one is 50/50... Manual or PDK... I am old school and love manuals, but bought pdk - now I am converted (Never thought I would say that) Next - you really are down to starting fights on here.... its whether you go uber lightweight and delete everything including radio/aircon, as per the press cars... or if you still want some comforts. Mine for example is fully loaded... the extra weight makes zero difference to me as a driver - I would prefer aircon, music, satnav etc... but everyone is different so - Spyder wheels are essential... then just go for whatever suits you Dont even get started on colours!!!!

You might spawn a few pages of debate with that one. Some will view the Spyder as a track car and the lightest spec as per Porsche's philosophy for the car is essential. Some will view the Spyder as a weekend sports car and a large proportion of the weight saving is permanent even if you add in come comforts, plus the suspension along with the weight saving, gives it its unique driving experience. Also its unique looks are a major factor in what makes the car. I think the only general consensus that was reached was that Spyder wheels were highly, highly desirable amongst most people looking to buy one of these cars. The biggest disagreement was whether opting for sports seats instead of bucket seats warranted stripping the owner of true Spyderman status[:D]
 
sort of turned off but it's never fully off :-( so you have on, sports mode (another needed option) then gives you a 10% slip angle. then off which is just about off in all but the tightest of bends, must have to do with steering wheel angle and power as it does cut back in. buy one like Porsche intended :) light as possible in the right Launch colour which I might add always sells fastest if resale is an issue. but then I could say , wheels, Buckets, PSE and manual with SS with NO AC also :) last of the true drivers cars to be made bar the Cayman R in that spec. Leather dash is nice on a 60k car and lifts it, and PCCB are just mega as imo the 4 pots are a little small and lacking in feel and bite but you can fit better pads etc. so my car lol but I wish it had xenons as Porsche lights are shit. the above is only imho :p and hence why I own it..... but I would take the extra weight of the xenons esp on my R as a daily, don't miss them on the Spyder as it only goes out in the sun.

An almost impossible question to answer as half the cars are manuals, not always with the s/shift, half the cars or more have sports seats and not always heated, and a shed load but still well in the minority don't have Spyder wheels! So the must have spec would appear to be Spyder Wheels, Side Stripe, Manual Roof [:D][:D] after that go for whatever rotates your wheels as in right colour right chairs right gears right heating system right audio equipment etc etc

Aircon,radio,PCM only adds back in 15kg so no real biggie on a car with the right wheels and buckets,but if you go sports seats and Pdk with Aircon etc the weight starts to mount up! My ideal spec is my car (the alcantara extras really lift the interior and gives a more sporty feel)but could do with xenons and sports design steering wheel to make it complete!

But the extra 32kg of the PDK gubbings still makes the 0-62mph quicker than the lighter stick shifters and being low down in the car the feel and handling remains unchanged [:D] Having had both options I know which one I can pedal quicker in any circumstances[:)]

Same engine as Boxster 987 Des, so pretty much sorted by now! (edited, before someone tells me about the slight increase in horsepower by fettling the engine management!) You can still play a bit in the wet with the car, but usually too much grip at road speeds......It's a bit detached and lardy compared to the air cooled leichtbau, but still a nice drive on the road and certainly quick enough. Are you looking for one Des? I have bought 2 now for non clued up (Porsche) mates, both happy, you need to buy the right spec car...otherwise you could end up with a 964 RS Touring by mistake!!!!
 
Carreraboy The Spyder's main mechanicals are stock 987. What makes it unique is the revised bodywork, weight saving and revised passive suspension. It's surprising how differently and how sharply the car drives compared to a stock 987 (and 981 for that matter). But it does drive very differently and whenever I had a standard 987 as a loaner when the Spyder was in for work, it made appreciate the difference in drive more each time. So, it's the standard DFI engine but running the Cayman S tune, so, still standard but 10HP more than a Boxster S. I believe the RMS scares went away with the introduction of the DFI engines. It's basically gen 2 987, whereas RMS, IMS etc. issues were gen 1 987.
 
I am selling mine - so am somewhat biased ... of course I am going to say its a great car to drive - but it really is! Having owned plenty of exotica - I think the Spyder has the perfect amount of power for road driving - enough for you to exploit without finding yourself at silly speeds. The handling, feedback and feel is amazing. I think within the Spyder community there is a huge feeling that there isn't much else out there deliverig the same fun and quality in that price bracket.

Big itch here ... looks like Porsche made a big effort here to build something driver focussed which bears resemblance to the old 550 Spyder ... engine right place and convertible with a twist of leicthbau ... would be interesting todrive a Porsche without the engine hanging out over there rear wheels, guess beetles never did 200MPH!
 
I'm almost certain mine will be up for sale mid August. Absolutely the purest spec - very rare in this spec. Spyder wheels, manual; short shifter; bucket seats; PCCB; No air con; no radio; leather trim to dashboard & doors; white; 10k miles; 12 months Porsche warranty; 4 year major service just done; 12 months tax & MOT; new battery; excellent condition all round. If I get the right money offered then it will go as I've a chance to go racing again next season. Have a look round at what others are fetching before considering making an offer. Message me if you're a genuine buyer
 
Wait until the end of summer, they have jumped £8-10k since last winter, there were very few buyers last winter with some cars hanging around for months.....I'm not saying prices are likely to fall all the way back, but there is definitely a seasonality with cars of this type. Anyone needing to sell over the Nov- Feb period, may find it harder to sell than they would this week! If you are going "modern", it's worth considering the PDK, you can effectively drive it as a manual, just shifting the levers up or down, it has 7 gears which almost feels too many at times, with the sports exhaust it makes a decent noise.
