Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

Nice pics. Planning a run up to north wales in June. Should be fun! Has anyone changed the manifolds on their spyder? Wouldn't mind a bit more sound with the pse switched on.

Great morning out. Spydermen reunited! Have to confess that when it really came to hey lads hey, particularly on the B road out of Ruthin, the electric steering of the Cayman ultimately disappoints when I can genuinely remember driving the Spyder in the same place and being enthralled. Only once or twice but... It is, obviously, a better all rounder though. I do miss the magic though. Very few places left in the UK where you can genuinely drive your car as Porsche intended and fascinating mix of cars and drivers, real privilege to be out with guys who are quick but smart, completely trustworthy and respectful to others. My car a bit humbler than exotic R and turbo but did OK :)

Yes a thoroughly great mornings drive and great therapy. As it happens I got called out to a job tonight in Betws y coed so did half the route again in the van :(
 
I hope you were a bit slower in the van Andy[:D] Rob, I always say it's not quite a fair comparison of a standard car's steering set-up with the Spyder & R but as you've taken both cars over those roads, your opinion is an eyebrow raiser. Let's see what they can do with the 981 Spyder and GT4 steering. The turbo handled better than I thought (don't know what I was expecting). The main difference to taking the Spyder over those roads was under braking when you feel the extra weight it has to anchor (possibly also coupled with getting to a higher entry speed than expected). But going around the corner it was fine (though a 987 definitely feels more agile). Was the first time i've taken the car on a drive like that. Found myself using third and fourth gear where I thought i'd be using 2nd and 3rd which felt strange at first but the gear ratios are short and they definitely felt like the right gears to keep the engine on song. Glad I forgot to put the PASM in sport mode on one section as some of the dips and troughs proved to me that I shouldn't get front spoiler lip painted in the body colour as its quite low and will sometimes get scraped.

Haha. I had the OPC warranty and my AA cover so you would of been fine. :)
 
Plastic v Ali [&o] Great shame the new GT4 & Spyder have no longer got the option of the Ali Sport steering wheel and have to do with a plastic cheaper feeling alternative [&o]

Haha. I had the OPC warranty and my AA cover so you would of been fine. :)
Did you decide to extend the warranty? I recall you were deliberating a few months back.

yes, I have, the cars amazing, performance is night and day in the seat and the sound on full chat is wow :)

it's the single 1 thing stopping me buying a 981 when the Cayman was launched. I cannot wait for you to try mine on the next bank holiday, you will have to drive it.

Yes, stuck another year on it, and will do it again in December.
 
Have made use of mine already. Was a simple coolant leak from an aged pipe but good to be able to have it collected so I didn't have to risk driving it and all taken care of. Would dread to think of the parts and labour cost (although the pipe was readily accessible underneath so maybe not too bad). I have one more year on the warranty it came with and then it's too old for the Porsche scheme.

It doesn't generate life changing amounts of money. I see two types of scenario where a car makes life changing amounts of money. One where the price soars as soon as the car is sold new. The other when you pick up a car on the brink of being a classic at say 10 to 15 years old and it becomes a classic shooting up in price at say 20 years old. With a newish car that didn't shoot up at launch, current owners are unlikely not to have been tempted by something else after too few years to see the megabucks roll in and haven't enjoyed the car as much as they could have in their time with it. I couldn't keep, say a 987 Spyder, worry about the value and barely drive it for say 4 years and then sell it for a few thousand over what I bought it for. I'd rather enjoy it plenty and sell it after a couple of years. I'd be kidding myself if I said it was a keeper or that i'll keep it 20 years because there’s too much out there to want to experience. You could even die before benefiting from preserving a fairly new car. Hats off to the guys trying a 981 Spyder. 'Nothing tried nothing gained', no matter whether it turns out that you like it, love it or unmoved buy it once you get it. I understand that some people just can't get out in the car as much as they'd like or they prefer dry miles only. Nothing wrong with that and they're not on a mission to drive the car as little as possible for future riches. So i'm not having a pop at anyone with low mileage, just speaking generally.

I used to worry about putting miles on the 964 prior to the Spyder. 60-something thousand on it when I got it and in the end I had to put a sticker over the milometer to stop me being obsessed with it. If I put a lot of money into a car i want to enjoy driving it, and with your old car I've done exactly that. Anything that wears out will get replaced, anything that fails will be fixed under warranty. Prior to convincing you to sell me your car on that frantic March morning last year I narrowly missed out on an 800 mile one - wonder if I would have had the same attitude to using it? Turbo looks an awesome thing. Have you had more than the 166 I've had out of the Spyder yet? ;)
