Porsche Boxster Spyder (2015) revealed: meet the al fresco Cayman GT4 Published: 01 April 2015 [link=http://images.car.bauercdn.com/pagefiles/11770/00000001boxsterspyder.jpg]

[ul][*] Porsche Boxster Spyder is back! ► Unveiled at the 2015 New York show ► Manual roof, 370bhp, thrills aplenty

You knew it was coming – [link=http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/spy-shots/porsche/porsche-boxster-spyder-reborn-for-2016/]we scooped it last month[/link]. Now the (short) wait is over: meet the new 2015 Porsche Boxster Spyder, unveiled at the [link=http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/motor-shows-events/new-york/2015/new-york-motor-show-2015-a-z-of-all-the-new-cars/]2015 New York motor show[/link].

It’s not the first Boxster Spyder, of course. The previous-gen model of 2010 became something of a cult classic among Porsche fans, valued for its pared-down kerbweight, keen chassis and retro speedster styling. No pressure for its successor then, but the present 981-series Boxster is such a talented starting point that this is unlikely to be a disappointing car.

[h2]What makes the new 2015 Boxster Spyder special?[/h2]This is a Boxster for driving purists (or perhaps that should be puritans). You’ll need to use old fashioned elbow grease to raise and lower the fabric roof, and a proper manual gearbox is the only transmission option.

That’s connected to a rather brilliant engine: another development of Porsche’s 3.8-litre flat-six, moonlighting from its day job in the[link=http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/porsche/porsche-911-carrera-s-2012-review/]911 Carrera S[/link] (and weekend work in the [link=http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/porsche/porsche-cayman-gt4-2015-review/]Cayman GT4[/link]). In the Boxster Spyder it’s tuned to 370bhp. It’ll polish off 62mph in 4.5 seconds and top speed is no less than 180mph. In a Boxster!

[h2]Interesting tail…[/h2]Like its predecessor, the Spyder gets a pair of bumpy buttresses behind the seats to make it stand out from the rest of the range. According to Porsche, they’re cribbed from the 718 Spyder racing car of the ’60s. They culminate in a kicked-up ducktail spoiler that’s pure 2.7 RS. Meanwhile the front and rear bumpers are borrowed from the Cayman GT4.

The seats are a bit special, too. They’re superlight shell-backed carbon buckets like those of the [link=http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-reviews/porsche/porsche-918-spyder-2014-review/]918 supercar[/link]. There’s no adjustability for the backrests – you’ll need to suffer for your art if you drive a Spyder.

Speaking of suffering, so seriously does the Spyder take its dieting that you don’t even get a radio as standard. Or air-con. (Don’t worry, both can be optioned back in. And Porsche won’t even charge you for the privilege, remarkably). [h2]Okay. Deep breath. How much?[/h2]That’ll be £60,459. While that’s an eyebrow-raising premium of around £20k over the base 2.7-litre Boxster, it’s around £7k more than a Boxster GTS. Look at it that way, and factor in the uprated brakes, unique bodywork and 911 engine transplant the Spyder entails, and it doesn’t seem so bad. Or maybe we’re getting carried away.

It’ll be available a little earlier than expected, reaching UK showrooms in July 2015, with order books open now. If you want one, don’t delay, as the Cayman GT4 essentially sold out in hours and CAR's had a queue of readers complaining they missed out.

£2.8k plus 4 hours labour, but + bhp and 25ft/lbs torque. a nice mod for 987.2 cars for sure.
Afraid Phil has emptied my piggy bank, I'm going to make do with playing your wonderful soundtrack when I feel the need, couldn't resist a drive yesterday, the sun was shining....within 10 minutes I was in the middle of a hailstorm with the roof packed away in the boot [8|] ...couldn't find a bridge to hide under anywhere...... think I have some cleaning to do [:)]

SPIED - 718 SPYDER TO GO INTO PRODUCTION?

The all new Boxster 718 Turbo Spyder under-wraps doing some roads test in and around Stuttgart.[;)]

01/04/16 You never know as the current version also launched on April Fools Day 2015[]

Weill it was my Spyders 6th birthday today, so decided to do the drive belt Change.

remember to check this after 6 years.

still over the moon with it, I have also bought another Cayman R :) so keeping it all old school. Really happy to be driving an R again.

The R arriving home on a sunny spring evening :)

I am getting on a bit lol, as EVERYONE knows the new cars don't do that much for me, the sweet spot imo was the 987.2 range, smaller, lighter !!! , just more honest all round as a driving tool. Never been a soft top person really, so the R is the best car I have had out of 65 odd cars, so when it went, I felt it was a mistake, so found a 20k mile minter with the main items, manual, buckets and spyder wheels.

Really happy with it and just don't get the new car hype it's 1/2 the price of my GT4 and you will never get cars that feel this basic again from Porsche :-( even the 911R seems a let down if that's the best they can do for a stripped down racer !!!

Lotus are the only people now, so if I decide to move on it will be for the new revamped Exige as a fun car for sure.

when you get a chance David, have a go in an Atom, it's an assault on your senses

yep for sure, I get cold easy though lol, Atoms, Caterhams, Xbows etc, not for me these days ! never thought I would say that at 47 years old, So it would be a V6 Exige or the new Elise cup 250.

Hence why I have had the Spyder 4 years, with my mods it's a bit like a big Exige and about as hardcore as I wish for now.

I would be In the new Elise 250 CUP 100% I think if I did not have my Spyder, but as that will drop 10k in 12 months and my Spyder is going up in price, just cannot swap it !

I'll be Aston age soon for the daily ;-)

Interesting Mr D

So how do you rate 987 Spyder vs 987 R, I guessed you preferred the Spyder when you sold the R ?

My Spyders that fun weekend car I only take out twice a month, The R's the better car, the Spyder is more special.

I thought I was going to use the GT4 as a daily but It did not happen, so the R is my main every day car again.

Will you mod the R as per your Spyder, or do you prefer the standard set up as a daily ?

All these Spyders are looking great. There really is no bad colour for this car.

After a month with mine (& I've been lucky enough to get out each weekend in it) I'm loving it. So lucky to have secured one. With all the attention on GT4 & GT3 RS I can't believe how this car has flown under the radar. What a special road car. and that NOISE! Epic.

Really pleased how my car has come together. PTS & trying to get your config just how you want it is stressful, but plenty of others have covered that in the various posts. For those who are still waiting for theirs to arrive, it is worth the wait.

Anyway I managed to take some better shots whilst I was out & about yesterday. Hope you like them.

I can't make the gathering at Silverstone, but if anyone fancies an informal Spyder gathering in the peaks later this month just drop me a line.

Aw. Mr Demon beat me to it!

Awesome looking Spyder and no expense spared you have the matching key too ;-)

Hope to be back in a Spyder end of the month as mine is due to exit factory this Friday

Can't believe my deposit has been sitting there with dealer for exactly 12 months today :-0
