"Can't understand"... You will indeed struggle to understand the mind of another as there isn't a reason - just personal desire and attraction. If two men walk into a tailor & one wants a double breasted suit and the other single breasted, they need not understand each other's choices...
I've had a Cayman as well. A gen 1 S manual. When it was at the OPC for a week (small job but they forgot about the car until I prodded them on day 4) I was indulging in a 997.2 GTS PDK. Got used to that car as I drove it every day but as soon as I picked up my old Cayman, I instantly preferred that centre-mass agility. But after the Cayman and the Spyder I still wanted a 911 so had to scratch that itch. Was quite disconcerting at first as the mid-engined cars are much more easier to get familiar with quickly. I started off driving the 911 differently, more cautiously, but as I learned how much grip it has, (to me, much more than the 987 - but I can only speak of the turbo and GTS variants) I don't seem to care that it doesn't feel as agile.
Another reason was I wanted a certain level of performance and as i've said on here before, if Porsche ever make a Cayman with close to 500hp & 600+Nm torque then i'd be in one. I know someone will say you don't need that much on the road, but I like the thrill of that thrust, not the top speed. Don't try to understand that either! I've done the EVO triangle in the Spyder and the turbo. The Spyder was more 'connected' to me as the driver, but the turbo, for what I wanted, was more exhilarating and no less capable, in fact more capable (I like grip and the turbo has it in spades - you can access that despite having less feel than the sublime 987 Spyder suspension set-up).
Anyway, back to Spyders, the point was, i'd have a 981 as much as i'd have a 987 Spyder if I was still in the market for a rag top but was just explaining why its unlikely to happen. Put me down as a previous owner on the tally
P.S. I don't believe the 911 is 4 seater by design so for me it's not really a 2 seater vs 4 seater debate. The engine is designed to be in a certain place, the transmission in a certain place, which happens to leave an expanse between the roof and the floor in the rear that can be made use of, just.
