Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

Sorry find that hard to believe ....my 987 Spyder with just 1400 miles was taken on a good test drive to make sure it suited me before I parted with my hard earned cash . The only car I have never driven was the 981 Spyder purely because there where non available at the time .In all my years of ownership and having over 100+ cars I have never purchased one without a test drive . So you see a nice top end car walk in a buy without even a test drive don't think so !

Any way I am sure the new Spyderman will not be disappointed with his new purchase and enjoy the car as much as we all do .

Quite a few top end dealers don't offer test drives on low miles ltd Ed cars.

nothing new.

RSJ never offer test drives on any stock.

Prep and high end details for resale, are not there for mr wanna be to test drive lol

Thats what main dealers are for.

my last 4 owned car I did not drive first.

I typically never test drive cars, weird but I tend to decide what I want to buy through internet searches, forums, pictures, owners opinions, advice from other car nuts and then just go for it. I might have been lucky but haven't yet been disappointed with a purchase.

Anyway, car was delivered this lunchtime by a very enthusiastic delivery driver saying its the best Porsche you can buy so lets see when I drive it home tonight! Shame its damp and dark but should get at least a feel for the car after my 20 mile commute home.

I have to say it looked stunning in my visitor car park today and several folks made comments on how nice it looked

First impressions or are you still driving it the lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng way home:ROFLMAO:

First Driving Impressions: I have to get used to driving a manual again as its been a while, but gear change is smooth and clutch a doddle to use. I cant get over how low the car is and feels, its lower than my 997 turbo and it scrapped on each of the speed bumps at my work but I guess its only catching the underneath of the front lip so wont be causing any or hopefully much damage. I had buckets in my GT2 and remember now how much l loved them as they keep you snug and it makes the whole experience more 'racy'. Steering is very pointy and direct and the car has enough power to bother most sports cars, I am not sure you would need any more on todays roads as I gave it a blast down the dual carriage way and was up over 80 before I knew it. I really love the way it feels on the road and with it being a manual you have to properly drive it, rather than just be a passenger, definitely more sporty feeling than the 997 turbo which was a bit of a blunt weapon that had too many horses for the road. I got it home feeling great and now its tucked up in the garage, the condition of the car is almost like new I don't think the previous lady owner hardly used the car and I think yesterdays rain might be the first time the car has been wet (shame but it is December). I was surprised how wide the car is as it only just goes in the garage, and still cant get over how good they look. The car drew a crowd at work when it got dropped off, a bit embarrassing actually. I am now looking forward to the weekend when I can get it out again and have a proper look over it. Somebody commented that it was a downgrade from my previous car, I actually don't agree with that as I see myself having a lot more fun in this car and with it being half the cost I feel its way better value for money too.

Big decision now is if and when to get the PSE fitted. I would like to hear a Spyder with it fitted to make sure its worth the 2k its going to cost so if anyone has one in the Sussex/Surrey area and are willing to show me please get in touch!

tricky I have a sport manifold fitted so I get the noise to shame the 981 Spyder boys, and extra BHP.

I would go for a SS kit 1st and think hard about exhausts, def just don't buy a Porsche PSE, with out talking to me about better option even better oem options.

Here is mine all be it flaps open and the mic at the rear next to the exhaust :) so not a true sound and people say too much, but it's not in real life.

[link=https://youtu.be/NUXq8r-BD4o]https://youtu.be/NUXq8r-BD4o[/link]

or just using the in car mic on track

i bought my spyder from pictures and the 111 point report from OPC without ever driving or seeing the car. it was just bought, paid and delivered to me. don't have it any more but only because i get bored far too easily. wish I didn't but unfortunately i do. loved the car when i had it but moved on

Not only the best boxster, prob the best open top sports car ever :)

I discount ,caterham, atoms etc those are for nutters :) and ones younger than me.

And the Elise is a great car, but it's not a Spyder.

Altbough if I were very wealthy I would have a BAC Mono also.

I agree about PSE for a 987. When my first Porsche had it I assumed it might be faulty as it didn't make too much difference when pressed (but couldn't be bothered to investigate) but now I am on my second Spyder and it is the same. It really should be louder when activated and I personally wouldn't pay to have it fitted. Definitely try and hear someone's first and see what you think.

I think Porsche have realised this, albeit gone a step too far, as the next gen Caymans and Boxsters are too far the other way imo.

I cannot comment on the PSE on a 987 Spyder, as I have the 981 version. But on my Spyder, with the Sport Plus button pressed, the PSE gives a great increase in that charismatic Porsche flat-6 engine note. And with a pleasing (boyish) amount of pops and bangs on the overrun when you come off the throttle. The automatic engine blip on downshifting is also accompanied by a pleasing noise from the exhaust too

Ive currently got my car booked into Mid-Sussex OPC for the retro-fit on January 9th. I need somebody to talk me out of it then! If anyone is near me (Horsham) and willing to show me what the PSE is all about I would be very grateful, alternately what are the options on exhausts with a 2K budget? I am quite close to 9e and PARR so have options on independents. I think the car needs more sound, but that's the only mod I am planning.

Took the car out for a blast yesterday and just loving it. Will post some pictures up soon.

Many thanks to all Spydermen.

I'm up in Westerham, Kent with a PSE equipped soundtrack if you wanted a trip over. I bought mine back in March, I was and still am completely underwhelmed by the noise, have looked at some alternatives but haven't ever removed my wallet from its hiding place !

I did recently email Gert at Carnewal who was very helpful, his reply is below;

If you already have the PSE on your 987-2 Spyder and you want more sound and HP, I would suggest to upgrade your existing manifolds and top the installation off with our PSE remote controller. The P87017 “Exchange Sport Cats” is a pair of original manifolds of which the 2x 400 cell elements are removed and the primary elements are replaced with HJS 200 cell sport cats, the HD version which is especially developed for Porsche DFI and high performance engines. This upgrade gives your Spyder 12-15HP extra and an increase of the sound with 25-30%. In other words, in the PSE silent mode, the sound will be louder but in the PSE/loud mode, the sound will also increase. This upgrade is 100% ok for emission checks and does not throw CEL’s. A remap is not necessary. On the outside, everything looks like original. Unlike aftermarket manifolds -mostly made in China- the ground clearance is not reduced. Due to the exchange system, we need to know the mileage of your exhaust. That way we can send a matching manifold with similar km/miles and we know beforehand what we will get back. That way we avoid that we send a nearly new ones and get manifolds back with 200K mls or vice versa . The price for the 987-2 exchange cats is 995 euro Shipping to the UK : 25 euro Total : 1020 +21%vat = 1234,20 euro. The core charge is an extra 750 euro and refunded after you return your manifolds. The p97084 “PSE remote controller” is a plug and play unit with a remote control that allows you to switch the exhaust from loud to silent at any time. It has a memory function so it always remembers the last setting. That way, you don’t have to start pushing buttons, every time you start the car. Keeping the exhaust in the loud setting will increase the sound as the DME will adjust itself to the open, freer flowing exhaust. The price for the PSE remote is 175 euro +21%vat = 211,75 euro. I would guess if you don't have PSE then there may be additional bits required, personally the first thing I do every drive is press Sport and PSE, I have bought a sports car after all [:)] so perhaps you only need one volume level for the exhaust ??

He wouldn't offer a drive and fit facility in his workshop so the manifolds would need to be fitted locally, the only aspect that has stopped me so far is that its an exchange so I couldn't retain the original should I want to refit. I haven't yet researched any further of alternatives as an outright purchase, perhaps others will know ?

Perhaps we could club together for a Bulk Buy ???

Martin

get a Cayman R PSe from gert, it's a bigger system so more power and switchable.

real noise, then cargraphic manifolds, but also loads more power also ;-)

or cheapest mod gerts exchange back box.

any one buying 981 Spyders ?

while the 2 best 987.2 SPyder have shifted this week inc the Top555 £48k one, NO 981 Spyders seem to be selling at all !!

in fact I have not seen a 981 sale for 6 months, only cars changing hand via traders. what price do you think these need to be to start selling ?

Dont worry about 11 Soyders when there are 40+ GT4's not selling. What price do they need to be to start selling ??? IMO either flavour at list price should do it

As above 11 Spyders on PH (7 on OPC) and there are 109 GT4's on the OPC alone. Given the ratio in the UK is approx 2.5/1 it would seem more price pressure on the latter. Spyder sales likely to pick up in the spring!
