Whilst I can just about appreciate the "rat-rod" style when dealing with older cars, particularly old american stuff, it just does NOT work when applied to a new(ish) classic

Over on the Spyder Owner's Club facebook page, an owner is reporting receiving this letter from his local Porsche Centre. He did not, unfortunately, include the info sheet it refers to. Anyone in the UK received anything similar? Or is it likely to be the revised instructions printed on the yellow paper that I have as an insert to my Owner's Manual?

"Dear Mr. *******, the lightweight soft top of your Porsche Boxster Spyder is stretched by two concealed covers, which are fastened to the boot lid by hand. Due to individual customer complaints, we have determined that there is the possibility that the hood fins do not latch correctly to the lock, provided that the procedure for correct locking as described in the operating instructions is not adhered to. If the Ver have not been properly locked, it comes in driving to clearly perceptible top sounds. In the event of complete detachment of the top covers during the journey, damage to surrounding body components (scratches, dents) may also occur. To avoid this, you will receive a supplement to the operating instructions in which the correct locking of the hood fins is again explicitly and more detailed. Please note these instructions when locking the hood fins on your vehicle. We also ask you to enclose this Supplement to your Owner's Manual so that if you sell your vehicle, the buyer will also have access to these instructions. If you no longer own the vehicle, please give us the name and address of the next owner directly on this letter and return it to us free of charge, so that we can inform the current owner of the vehicle accordingly."

Yes I received that information 23/09/16 along with a new additional manual/brochure

So they are saying there is not an issue with ripping, you just need to fit the roof in the right way ;-)

Two seperate issues here:

1. Porsche issued an Owner's Manual addendum to make sure that owners plugged the 'buttresses' correctly into the rear wings. Seemingly there had been reported cases where the buttresses had come lose and the plastic fitting had been flapping around and damaged the bodywork. I am guessing that the owner who received the letter from his local Porsche Centre in Germany was either a new owner and the PC was ensuring he was in receipt of the addendum, or the PC had been tardy issuing the addendum sheet to him and had only recently picked up on their omission.

2. The 2nd issue is the tears/rips in the roof fabric. To my knowledge neither Porsche nor Porsche GB have not acknowledged that this is an endemic fault and are treating it on a case by case basis. However, of something like 13 owners who have reported on this forum, 4 have reported such damage. And there are even more reported cases in Germny. In my case, my local PC (in Chester) are taking the car in later this month to replace the complete roof fabric. In Germany, there has been a mix of either complete replacement, repairs or repairs with the inclusion of some tape reinforcement.

You are mixing your drinks [:D]

The ripping is a completely separate issue

The additional manual sent out was trying to clarify the correct procedure for securing the tails by basically not using your palm when connecting tails to rear deck lid but use your fingers on the outer edges, listen for the click confirming connected correctly and all is now good to go [;)]

"Warning"

This is a really shocking youtube footage of a Spyder crash injuring many people but I have posted it to see if anyone can figure out what they think caused the car to go out of control so violently

Puncture, Oil on road surface, drivers skills!

Well, hard to know exactly what caused it, other than that the driver was being a complete t*** and racing/showing off on a public highway.

'Cars & Coffee' events are enjoyable and I have been to a few in Chester & Liverpool, but do also attract a certain element who treat the roads as a drag strip at times. Indeed, the C&C event that used to be held at Chester Castle had to be moved when the authorities got complaints of inappropriate behaviour (driving) when cars left the event.

Agree the ripping is a separate issue and should be addressed as such seems it is on higher miles cars that this is happening to ,mine has only covered 2.940 and looks ok . Not received any notification from Porsche .I always listen for the click if not heard go through the procedure till it does click .One previous owner on here who has now sold his car was unfortunate to have the passengers buttress fly off causing damage to the rear deck and he is 100% sure it was located correctly ,the OPC did get it sorted FOC for him .

Easier to show bit hard to type up but when you have heard the click or not I always double check by feeling the underside of the tail end / plastic area and if you can feel a small hole then the catch has engaged if you can feel the tip end of the red plastic catch then it hasn't. I was shown this tip by a Spyder owner who was shown it by his dealer

I just listen for the 'click' and then quickly look to see if the red tab is visible or not

The feeling for it saves having to look [;)] 👀. If you can feel the small hole it’s all good if you can feel the red tip start over again
