Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

New to Forum. GT Silver/Classic 3 months now. Catching up on interesting reads.

Two Red 981 Spyders seen - Silverstone Classic reg: G6... and Goodwood FOS reg: M50....

Saw 7 Spyders at Classic.

Welcome to the forum and Spyder ownership and what a cracking 3 months you must have had weather wise as well as Spyder thrills [8D] Are you going to Brands on the 2nd hopefully I will be there in Spyder weather gods permitting :ROFLMAO:

Brands Tickets bought yesterday. Not sure of the format for infield parking.

A quick question to fellow 987 Spyder owners ,my car has done very few miles this year as being using the 981. I decided to put the 981 off the road for a few months and bring on the 987 ,on starting up when you press the clutch fully to the floor nothing will not start , press clutch in again and starts first thing do it once more and up comes the "Depress Clutch Sign " on the dash ,changes gears with little pressure once on the move very easily changes gears ...is there a pressure switch some where ,sadly no warranty left on it so don't want to take it to the OPC .It will be off the road again the end of the Sept so not needing to use it again this year .

yes a microswitch issue, I had my OPC take it out, it was pointless and can leave you stranded, either take it out and short the cable or it might just need a bend as you say you can start it. It's under the pedal some where. simple fix ;-) esp if it just needs a 5 mm bend on the microswitch arm.

Great link but there have been some more recent spy shots of the new GT4 and spyder that look virtually finished.

i really think the talk of a GT3 engine is hype (despite the source) and wishful thinking as the exhaust tail pipes just don’t support it. GT3 engines have central pipes. These have split pipes like the 991.2 S engine which is smaller, 420bhp already and will fit Easier. Also, the emissions regs go out of the window with the GT3 engine.

Anyway, it’s anyones guess at present so I could be wrong. Good for our residuals if it’s the 991.2 engine.

 
A 991.2 turbo engine? - no chance of that Chris.

The sensible money's still on a n/a flat-6 making around 420PS, most probably 4.0 litres capacity (more than likely its only link to the GT3 engine).

Hi all. Pleased to see there should be a few Spyders at Brands on 2nd Sept.... and Daro911, I'm also pleased to see that you may be going, as I will be going there in my little beauty (your ex 987.2 Spyder). She's still just as well looked after, clean and unmarked, but has now travelled a still-low, 11900 miles in total and I'm loving it - I consider it the best car I've ever had, and as you know, I'm no youngster !. Apparently I'll be parking on Southbank. Is that where all us club members will be parked ? Anyway, hope to meet up with some other Spydermen at the event. Cheers, Dave

Upcoming Spyder is due with the 911 GT3's 4.0-litre engine. Consider our interest piqued

Due for reveal later this summer before arriving on roads in the winter, the new, driver-focused drop-top will eschew turbocharged boxer power for - hooray - a naturally-aspirated flat-six, plucked directly from the [link=https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-driven/porsche-911-gt3-rs-driven/37924]911 GT3[/link].

What output the motor - which is capable of revving to 9000rpm in the GT3 - will produce in the Boxster is yet to be revealed. There is, however, growing suspicion that the peak horsepower figure could start with a 4, which would make this midship convertible, a successor to a car that pushed the Boxster Spyder bar up into the stratosphere, one very serious performance proposition. We await the car's launch with bated breath.

It's easy to characterize the [link=https://www.pistonheads.com/road-tests/porsche/porsche-boxster-spyder-driven/33298]last Boxster Spyder[/link]: it was absolutely the best version Porsche ever made. Hands down, no argument. It was this way because - having long held back from making the 981 generation as good as it could be so as not to overtly challenge the superiority of the 911 - Zuffenhausen finally yielded to buyer demand (and manifest destiny) and installed the 3.8-litre flat-six in its mid-engined model.

It helped of course that the Spyder was very much the sister car of the [link=https://www.pistonheads.com/news/driven/porsche-cayman-gt4-review/31775]Cayman GT4[/link], was only available with a manual six-speed gearbox and had shed rather a lot of weight - most notably from the electric mechanism that previously powered the roof. Looking spectacular didn't hurt either; the signature twin hump rear deck being even more pronounced than it was in [link=https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/boxster-987-05-12/2011-11-porsche-boxster-spyder-3-4-manual/7929375]the 987 version[/link].

With the template now well established, it's fair to say we've been rather looking forward to the next iteration - and the latest spy shots of it from Porsche's winter testing base don't do anything to dispel the sentiment. Nor does the suggestion that [link=https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-porsche/new-718-boxster-spyder-pics/37117]the 718 model[/link] will now get the same 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated engine as used in the [link=https://www.pistonheads.com/news/driven/porsche-911-gt3-991-2--review/36151]911 GT3[/link].

The appeal of seeing (and hearing) Porsche Motorsport's 500hp, 9,000rpm masterpiece in a Boxster (not to mention the next Cayman GT4) would be self-evident against any backdrop, but it's made to seem doubly so by the varying degrees of disgruntlement focused on the 718's turbocharged flat-four. Whatever you think of that engine, the contrast with an atmospheric and twice-larger capacity flat-six is likely to be striking, even if Zuffenhausen chooses to mildly detune its output.

That seems probable given the hallowed positioning of the GT3 in the 911 lineup, but as the Spyder (and GT4) can be expected to significantly outdo the 365hp delivered by the [link=https://www.pistonheads.com/news/driven/porsche-718-cayman-boxster-gts-driven/37172]recently launched GTS[/link], it is unlikely to be by much. And while the option of a seven-speed PDK is likely to be made available this time round, the six-speed manual transmission will remain the default fixture.

Also standard will be the Spyder's long-running diet plan. As the pictures show, the soft-top is set to return in manual format, and Porsche is presumed to have again done away with the model's sound deadening (good) as well as its infotainment and climate control (not so good - but expect their reinstatement to be a no-cost option). Expect too the price to have gone up: it won't have escaped Zuffenhausen's notice that the 981 car [link=https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/boxster-981-12-16/porsche-boxster-roadster-3-8-spyder-2dr/8204131]immediately appreciated in value[/link] once registered, and the manufacturer will (correctly) assume that its 4.0-litre engine rather adds to the lustre.

 
Old news - yet more fluff from the mags and online..!

The only thing of note is that while the GT4 and Spyder rear PUs look identical, the Spyder has been seen with 2 different front PUs - with the GT4 duct on-track and without in the latest on-road pics.

Spyder and GT4 have always been just under 911 Carrera price at base. No reason to expect Porsche to change this and eat into 911/ GT3 premium territory. (I hope !!!!!!)

no one seems to know but I cannot see the car being over £10k more than the last one hence no Gt3 engine.

Some say a stroked 3.8 (seems the easiest way), some say a whole new 4.0 engine ! some still say turbo. but we know the old 3.8 can do 435BHP so a 420BHP 4.0 seems daft and brings nothing to the party bar a bit more speed and a head line 4.0 number.

Unlike most info I get, I don't seem to be able to get any on this engine !

the rumors all say detuned GT3 engine even from OPC's lol but I don't see it.

I cannot see it being a brand new 4.0l engine either just for these 2 cars unless they also have it pinned for a future 992 car of some sort.

 
Can't see the 718 being 100k for a Spyder if it is much more expensive than the previous models it will take a lot of people out of buying it for financial reasons.
