Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

iansr said:

Very much so, a caterham is not really a usable car , we are seeing cars over 2 tons atm the new land rover is 3 tons.

drive a 1450 kg car and then a 1250kg car and the change in direction is there to see, feel etc. My 991.1 GTS lasted 2 months, very over rated car like any 981 is.

718 will be a nice daily if any OPC will let you have one without games, but they do weigh a bit much now days which is a shame.

981 will be nice buys at 55k when you can then de-restrict the engine back to 435bhp.

but it’s a big flaw and the 4.0 engine is getting rave reviews and making power till red line.

435 BHP? That’s a big hike in power. What are your grounds for believing that’s possible?

Edit: I know the engine came from the 991, but even the GTS version was only 424BHP. And do we know for sure that the Spyder engine wasn’t downgraded in some fundamental way which would make up rating it either very difficult or very expensive?

[/quote]

we have members running 430 Bhp and I have be in it, they are night and day over oem. I ran a 991 GTS a great engine they goto 460 if you wish.

or if you have the cash 4.2L :) >500bhp.

so a slight correction :) "430 HP / 345 LBF-FT" for the 981 Spyder is very possible just with £8k worth of bolt on's and a remap.

As you seem so impressed by journalists reviews of the 4l engine it's strange how unlike you they fell for both your pet hates above [&:] Perhaps they just read a Porsche script they are given when reviewing and you may well end up with a new pet hate in the new 4l :ROFLMAO:

the hates which are worse in the 981 !!! and now the Jurno are catching up 4 years later !! they are pretty clueless all told.

all cars since the 987 and 997 range are pretty dead to drive. They are just nice cars now, the 981 and 718 Spyder are NOT Spyders either, they are Boxsters with fake tails !!

the Spyder concept was open top motoring and light weight, the newer models seem to have forget that !

the issue with the 4.0 is the torque limit and long gearing !! but both are worse in the 981 so the 718 will be better to drive in every single respect !

esp the Spyder over the GT4.

the 987.2 is an iconic car with real driving appeal. Any newer inc my 991 GTS are just ok cars. Prob more fun if you had an MX5 truth be told.

I would have kept my GTS if it had good steering, it did not even after fitting PS4S' tyres and the suspension was crashy ..

GTS models are over rated, but the engine was an amazing unit the x51. the engine the 981 GT4 and Spdyer should have got !!!

if I could find a car today I would buy a 997.2 manual GTS, to get that engine matched with hydraulic steering and fit some plush passive shocks.

But I have been looking for the perfect car and people just seem to be keeping them !!! 25 PDK for sale no manuals !!!!

while the new cars will be a step on in every way over the 981, the gearing stands sadly.

roll on the GT4 RS PDK

Hi everyone

I don’t often post comments on this forum, but if we want to talk true Porsche spyders, it would only have an air cooled engine and very few of us who follow this forum, would be able to afford one.

happy motoring

I think I am correct in saying that Porsche had to dump air cooled engines to meet noise and emission legislation decades ago so some things have to change no matter what

Best prepare oneself now for an eventual hybrid or full electric Spyder further down the road [&:]

Apparently the first 718 Spyder's have just arrived anyone on here got one coming next month [8D]

It appears the 987 market at least really has got Brexit blues...the two at 911V have sat there for ages now...most unusual

I understand full bucket seats have 3 height positions and move backwards and forwards, but no rake adjustment. A question for those who have lived with them: how comfortable are they vs the 18 way seats?

FYI I’m of slim build so narrow width is fine for me.

I take it you are referring to the 987/981 folding carbon backed buckets seats .They only go forwards and backwards there is no height adjustment ,they do fold but off no use as you can get nothing in behind .The 918 seats have height adjustment and do not fold and the back is a bit more upright, Being only 5.8" with short legs I have to sit well forward in order to reach the clutch pedal and the 918 seat I have sat in lets me see over the bonnet easier. The 987 /981 did have the option off heaters but the 918 does not .As to comfort on a long journey they are not the best comfort wise ,but do support you on a brisk drive ,the cushions on the 987 non heaters are just attached with Velcro so you can add extra padding to the seating area ,I have done this in my 987 and gives a wee bit extra height .I would say and it is personnel choice as to 18way DFS chairs or buckets but the value of the car will reflect this as the buckets the preferred option others will disagree ,to retrofit buckets you are looking into a considerable cost £££££.Hope you find the car that suits you all model are great cars and attract a lot of attention .

The seats in the car I’m looking at are the Full Buckets, not the Sports Buckets. They do not fold but they have electric height adjustment. They look different to the Sports Buckets apparentl.

Anybody have those ?

Hi all

I have the full carbon bucket seats in my 981 spyder and can say that they are extremely comfortable and supportive when pushing on ! They are a little too upright in my opinion and could do with some machined shims put under the front of the seat runners to tip them back a little for the perfect position

Thanks for that. How do you find them on a long drive, say 3 hours or more?

PS. When looking on YouTube for any videos about them I came across one done by a physio who was saying it’s better for your back if it is close to being upright when in your car.

I have the 'folding carbon buckets' in my Spyder: manual forward/back; no height adjustment; no rake adjustment; folf forward enough to put a road atlas, hat, scarf, etc between the seat back and the firewall.

At first sight, the seats look too upright and somewhat lacking in padding. In reality, they are great. The seat rake certainly suits me. And the seats themselves are comfortable. We have done three Euro-trips of cicra 2500 miles each and have never found ourselves uncomfortable. (I am 6' 1" and of a larger size, and my wife a size 12). Indeed, if you are on roads that allow spirited driving, the seats are great at holding you in place and negating the need to hang on to the sterring wheel like gtim death!!

Hi Ted - Finally a customer car arrives :ROFLMAO: Hopefully soon we may hear from an actual owner and get some real world views on what the newbie is actually like on the road
