Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

Yep, I was thinking of getting into a 991 Carrera 4S cab that I saw up just after Xmas and contacted the OPC to be offered (for my top spec manual 987 Spyder).."around the 30 mark"...I gave then the same response...

Wil try and sell privately in Q1 and see how that goes.

I think all Spyders are going to drop tbh esp with the N/A 6 cyl now dropping into the GTS models; I didn't see that coming.

Why is that there is now a Speedster Register and section on the forum but not one for Spyders despite close to 1000 pages on “our“ single topic.

Seems as if “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”?

Symptomatic of a bias towards the precious 911 maybe David, where there seems to be a proliferation of sub-forums?

Maybe we should just consider ourselves fortunate that there's a Boxster,Cayman section where the sub-forums are ... Oh! - Boxster and Cayman..! [;)]

Obviously my post was a bit ”tongue in cheek”...but seriously this is supposed to be a club run for its members. It’s been said before that it sets a precedent if new subsections are created on the forum - but that’s clearly not true now.

It’s virtually impossible to find any useful info by searching 900 pages - I’m assuming the system won’t cope with more than 999 pages so something will need to be done soon anyway.

Here’s a suggestion to the web people - close the Speedster category as it has virtually no posts and make THEM use one topic for the rare occasions they want to communicate with each other and give the Spyder community (who clearly have plenty to say) its own category? That way you’ve used no more slots but aligned the ones you do have on the basis of use. Or is that too much like common sense?

As long as I can remember always been a Speedster Register I assume the new one will be lumped in with that register to bolster numbers as it's a small register or maybe have a choice of 991 register.

A Spyder is a Boxster A Gt4 is a Cayman .

This Spyder thread has been given a stay of execution on a couple of occasions because of the volume thanks to Tracy it continues to survive. Many thanks to Rob Stone for keeping things alive up to date here.

Long may it continue. [;)]

With great respect Cliff that comes across as a patronising response that does not address the points made.

With respect if we had a forum register and register for each specific we would be overun.

Each register strives to cater for each specific I know the Boxster Register has included each specific over the years.

Enjoy. [:D]

Couldn't agree more

Why is there not room for more Registers?

The spyder is unique enough to hold its own especially as we are now on the 3rd generation

When you look at the list of registers surely its about time

What better way to celebrate 10 years since its launch

So reduce some of the existing ones. The problem is keep adding without a structured logic. Why have a new register for each new 911 - should be air and water thats it. Im afraid not having a Spyder one makes no sense whatsoever.

Im now in a boxster after the Spyder and would be quite happy to roll all Boxsters and Caymans into one including 718. Roll Spyders and speedsters into a seperate one.

Significant others like RS GT3 /GT4 should be combined or separate depending on the numbers. What is the point in having a register which has virtually no members.

You get the idea it needs an overhaul.

I do not accept Cliff's argument. If a particular model generates regular posts and conversation, then it should be seriously considered for its own (sub-)forum.

Picking on what 'legin' posted, I had a look at the forum model structure and, sure enough, 911's are split into 'Air-cooled' and 'Water-cooled'. However, it is when you look at the Sub-forums that the issue becomes less justifiable.

There is a standalone '356' forum

'911 Air-cooled' has 12 sub-forums:

Early 911

911 2.7

911 SC

911 3.2 Carrera

912

914

030 (911 Turbo)

964

964RS

993

993 RS

Speedster

'911 Watercooled' has 5 sub-forums

996 (inc Turbo)

997 (inc Turbo(

991 (inc Turbo)

GT3

992 (inc Turbo)

'924, 928,944,968) has 4 sub-forums

924

928

944

968

'Cayenne, Macan, Panamera' has 3 sub-forums

Cayenne

Macan

Panamera

'Carrera GT, 918 Spyder, 959' has THREE sub-forums

Carrera GT

918 Spyder

959

'Taycan' is a stand-alone forum.

Just looking at the 'Carrera GT, 918 Spyder, 959' forum:

The 'Carrera GT' sub-forum contains the grand total of ONE topic!!!

'918 Spyder' has NONR

'959; has NONE

A quick look at the '911 Air-cooled forum shows the following topic counts for the sub-forums

Early 911 - 17

911 2.7 -three

911 SC -13

911 3.2 Carrera -two pages of posts

912 - six

914 - five

930 (911 Turbo) - six

964 - seven

964RS - 14

993 - 428

993 RS - five

Speedster - two

The 'Boxster, Cayman' forum;

Boxster - 6868 topics

Cayman - 2400 topics

And the 'Boxster Spyder' forum (i.e the "Are Spyders becoming extinct st OPC's!" topic has 928 pages of posts, comprising 19,160 individual posts!!!!!!

Not sure how many Cayman GT4 posts may be lurking in the 'Cayman' sub-forum

Sorry, but to my eyes there is a distinct imbalance here. And it seems that the forum managers jast cannot be a**ed to make a change for something that is not a 911. Or, can they justify it?

Some good points raised ..for and against .One thing I hope never happens is all the good work started by our Daro 911 Robert Stone way back in Sept 2012 to date 19.630 posts and close to half a million views .458.502 is removed from the forum .As one of the early owners and contributor to this thread over the last 8years it has remained a talking point .

I have meet socially with some of the founding owners over the years and although some have sold up []and moved on the different model there is still a common soft spot for the models and a lot on this forum are still owners of the first model my self included. Now in its third generation is still the nicest in my eyes off all the models in the range .As to the SPEEDSTER will leave that to the lottery winners [:)] for them to decide. ** Long live this thread **

To my mind the "is it a separate model or not" argument is semantics and risks the implication that one car is better or more valuable than another which should be irrelevant in this discussion.

The point I was making is that we all belong to Club as a community and for a significant number of us that is expressed through reading/ posting to the forums. Simply put then, the way these are organised should reflect the needs/use of the community members - in the absence of any other metric then the number of posts gives a pretty good indication of where that need/ use is.

So it doesn't seem to much to ask that the Spyder thread be organised in a way that better addresses the needs of those who use it - its our Club as much as anyones.

High performing organisations (which I believe the Club aspires to) welcome feedback and see it as an opportunity to improve rather than dismiss it as personal criticism/ put in the too hard box/ say its always been that way. I would have thought a regular review of the forums would have highlighted some of the imbalances pointed out by Paul in his analysis above.

The fact that this point has been raised a number of times by different members is instructive surely? But it seems to be being used as a reason not to do anything about the situation rather than being recognised as a chance to improve the way the Club supports its members.

I haven't seen a reason why changes can't be made - I've got 20+ years experience of managing major systems change projects and it looks pretty run of the mill to me. And you what even if it does cost a bit of money and effort - so what if its what make the forum work that's what should be done. I personally will get more from resource being spent on that than I will from some of the other things the Club is spending our money on.

To be clear this is not criticism or knocking of anyone or anything - and yes huge thanks to Rob for his first and many subsequent posts.

Paul,

It may surprise you to know that a Cayman GT4 thread is now on its third iteration - a total of 3785 posts, and counting.!

another chancer! Can’t even be bothered to quote a price

It's joke as I cannot get one ordered still !!

I might offer that one £5k under list ;-) as there is no way people are going to pay overs on these 718's.

981 are dropping nice now, so at £60k I might be tempted to get back into one.

Why ? You have done nothing but slag off the steering and gearing when you had a 981. Very odd.
