Cayenne S Diesel

Hi

I am currently a Carrera Cab Owner, but considering a change, Cayenne Diesel S looks to have a good mix of performance and comfort ...... Would I miss the power or is the Diesel S as good as you all seem to be saying ....... Also quite a lot cheaper than 991

Just looking through the back pages in Topgear magazine - is the Cayenne S Diesel the most powerful production car diesel in the world?

What kind of MPG are you getting now Alex? Any other tips before I collect mine on Saturday? [:)]

26.4 mpg average across 4000 miles. But most trips I see early 30s unless I am driving it in sport mode like I would my 911 :)

Running in, let the oil temp get up to 90 ish and then drive it like you stole it! Mine now is a rocketship and handles like a sports car weighing half a tonne less - with air PASM set to sport which lowers the car and PTV plus doing its magic. It's mind blowing how a car this big can stop and go so well.

Forget using paddles as with 8 low reving gears you are always in the wrong one when trying to change manually. Sport mode gear changes are more than adequate.

Take a digital tire pressure gauge with you to the showroom and set all the tires to what they should be. OPCs tend to over inflate.

Plus get the salesman to walk you through all the buttons even if you think you know what they all do. The arm rest slides forward don't forget, and you can load like 40GB tunes into the PCM jukebox so prep an iPod etc ready for the upload.

Lastly get them to change the dashboard to show road speed limits - great feature they tend to not show you about.

Enjoy, I know you will as I'm still amazed daily about how good this car is.

Have to say everything you said is true! Seems to defy physics in terms of shove and handling.

On a long clear run up to London early this morning at 65 on A roads, 85 on motorways got 36 mpg which was a pleasant surprise. Only done 160 miles but loving it so far.

Glad to hear you are enjoying the new car. It really loosens up past 4000 miles :)

Question: what tyres/size are you running?

I have never seen 36mpg even though I am nearly fully run in now and I am wondering if its the resistance of the all season M+S tyres.

 
I am on all season tyres too. Today was quiet roads but then through central London into WC1 at 8.30 and I averaged 35.7 overall.

Unless you are driving like Kimi on every trip you might want to get it looked at. I will keep you posted on how the mpg goes at my end. It might be my computer!

Anyone else out there with a Diesel S who can report on mpg for a comparison?
 
I do have a lot of optional extras on mine so perhaps it's all the extra weight?!

A full tank on a motorway run will get me about 650 miles range. That's not too far off the reported 700 which they obviously got whilst hyper-miling.

What is weird is the PCM mpg will sometime say something slightly different to the mpg on the dashboard!
 
Mike, you must be doing something right to get that mileage as I barely got that out of the Diesel Cayenne. I'm wondering what mileage I'll get in July when the Diesel S arrives home. And it'll be on 20" wheels but normal rubber if that makes much difference, but my mileage on winter tyres definitely dropped slightly.
 
It had only done 60 miles so was taking it quite gently, but very hard to resist checking out the acceleration from time to time!

It was a 100 mile run so will keep posted going forward. The torque is unbelievable!
 
Just placed a deposit on a S diesel, interesting to compare the performance against my previous 9974S.

Still playing with the spec but would welcome advice on the steering wheel. Really like the look of the paddles but will i really need them? Any views on the sports design kit

I refer you to my earlier posted options review:

* White <= stays surprisingly clean despite my best efforts and looks great!!
* ParkAssist front and rear <= essential given the dimensions of this car
* Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus) <= havent driven in very dark conditions yet so difficult to say how good this is. No complaints yet though.
* Stainless steel front apron <= adds to the looks IMHO
* Panoramic Roof System <= awesome, makes such a big light difference inside. However when going through a snow blizzard the other day the AC couldnt keep the windows from misting up until I closed the blind on the sunroof for more insulation
* Bi-Xenon headlights system incl. Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) <= same as above
* Air suspension with self-levelling and height adjustment incl. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) <= essential for any Cayenne IMHO, love the way the Sport button lowers the car to help handling, plus great to raise the car when going through flooded roads (loads around me recently)
* Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) <= havent really pushed the car enough to notice this yet
* 20-inch RS Spyder Design wheel <= the BEST option I went for, the grey wheels look clean all the time and really suit the car against the white.
* Wheel hub cover with full-colour Porsche Crest <= make a big difference to the wheel look IMHO
* All-Season tyres for 20-inch one-piece alloy wheels <= been useful in the recent snow, haven't had any grip issues once yet
* Tyre-pressure monitoring system (TMS) <= safety net I wouldnt ever do without again
* Adaptive cruise control <= much better than my old Audi system, use it every day and wouldnt be without it on a new car now
* SportDesign steering wheel with paddles <= love this steering wheel, so glad my saleman couldnt talk me out of this
* Adaptive sports seats incl. memory package <= so much better than the same seats in my 911, unbelievably comfy - only missing a massage option!!
* Sidebags rear <= for Junior in the back
* Heated front seats <= very good for winter or aching back muscles
* Digital radio (DAB, DAB+, DMB) <= unsure why I got this as I never listen to the radio - the PCM holds 40GB jukebox to download music to from a memory stick...
* BOSE® Surround Sound System <= okay but not great
* Preparation for mobile phone <= needed for bluetooth integration for your mobile, can also play music from my iPhone over bluetooth
* Porsche Communication Management (PCM) incl. navigation module <= required
* Universal audio interface <= required
* Auto dimming rear view mirror <= didnt realize I'd spec'ed this! Haven't noticed any blinding glare from cars behind though.

You wont use the paddles but the steering wheel looks and feels great!!

Really glad I didn't get the aerokit now as I had it spec'ed on the regular Diesel before the S was announced. You are just going to get those painted rims scratched all the time and it's a crazy amount of money for something that really doesn't add to the driving experience. Really it's just putting lipstick on a pig anyway...

The most essential options on the new Cayenne for me over the last 3 months have been:

1. Air suspension
2. Adaptive Cruise Control
3. Heated front seats

I wouldn't ever consider a 2nd hand Cayenne if it didn't have all three of these.

By the way, I hear from my dealer that all S Diesels there have been spec'ed around the £75k mark (cheapest was 73). So nobody seems to be going with rock bottom specs.
