Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

I think it's funny that they have to quote £130k + vat each .... !

SICOM --- I have championed them ever since I finished off my PCCB's at Spa last year. I've never hidden the fact or the 34k miles that I'd done, and that's the reason why I've gone for PCCB's again. I have no fear of destroying them (if I do) --- the refurbs looked as good as new and came with a 12 month 10,000 mile warranty for known hard trackday use (better than Porsche) --- and I reckon that I would have spent more on multiple sets of steels so ??

As an aside to the R discussion --- my garage now includes a Mk4 MX5 2.0 for all the family --- and a dip back into Mezger with a low mileage 2007 GT3 Clubsport with perfect ---- PCCB's. Manual, five stud wheels, half cage, carbon buckets, narrow bodied, mezger engined --- as powerful as the RS (at twice the price) and as light as a 911R. Go figure :)

My first 997GT3 ... Life is a journey !

Chris - All of a sudden 997 Gen1 GT3's are looking a bargain again, next to £110k GT4's ... ?!!! Andrew

I was very close to buying a 997.1 GT3 at £75k fit some Ohlins road and track, the short final drive and RS flywheel. but I needed a daily hence another R over the GT3.

good project if one sells a GT4, although I bet the GT4 would have it on track, be very close. seems the best value GT3 to own atm.

Also some say the 997.1 is the best GT3, narrow body and the 3.6 engine is lighter than the 3.8 so more exciting I am told. I have driven one but a few years back, the PASM put me off hence Ohlins road and track fitment.

thank goodness for Sicom we can all say, although prices are up and the £ is down so still a little money esp on 420mm disks so about £5.6k to do all 4 GT4 disks.

or is it all good news ?

people not happy it seems !!!

Steel disks on my R are £150 the pair, to refurb my front PCCB is £1800 so running CCB on the 987.2 platform is a lot more % wise as I would not have used 12 sets of disks !

I never found Porsche discs that cheap, not even on my old 3.2 Boxster !

--- yes I've just replied to the Sicom question, it will be interesting to find out more ---

I think he's referring to the discs that are made by Sebro which in my experience are equivalent quality to those in a Porsche box. I always used Sebro discs on my 964 (£55 each!) and will use them on my CR too.

yep, Sebro are the way for replacement, I think Sebro make the Porsche ones any way !!! and you can now get groved ones over drilled for better track use with RS29 pads.

D,

I too was under the impression that Sebro are OE fitment for Porsche, but I found this on P-9 (from 2011):

"I spoke to the Sebro Tech helpdesk here in the Uk and was advised that the original Boxster 986 was equipped with Sebro supplied rotors from the factory- Sebro made/ supplied the rotors for Porsche. The 987 models list a different part number for the rotors on the 3.2/3.4 from the 986 3.2 , this is because Porsche swapped suppliers on the 987 model. The 986 S and 987 Boxster S/Cayman S use identical rotors , so I see absolutely no issue with using Sebro parts. The 2.7 model uses a different rotor on the 986 to the 987 models , though I still belieive the Sebro part is up to the required standard. The OEM supplier for brake pads is Textar, these can also be bought outside of the Porsche dealer network."

Their website doesn't state specifically that they are a Porsche OE supplier but it looks like an impressive facility devoted to quality brake disc and engine parts manufacture.

Have you read the new Evo - where they compare the GT4 against other landmark cars such as the new Exige, Ferrari 458, Lambo, M4 and even the iconic Mk1 GT3 - again the GT4 comes out on top on virtually everything, even manages to beat the 458 round a track by 2 seconds ... They are saying the Gt4 is the best Porsche of a generation... and any owners are very fortunate to have the best car in the World .... WOW ;) Makes you feel very good for long term residuals ... £££ ;)

It came out 2nd best to all the cars !

Less pure, less exotic, slower /458 had shit tyres, less space, less Porsche !

That's a pretty cynical conclusion [&:][strike][/strike]

I don't own a GT4 and my reading of the article was quite the contrary - EVO seem to have fallen in love with the GT4.

I haven't seen the article but to beat a 458 by TWO seconds around a lap (long lap or short lap doesn't matter) is either damn brilliant or very contrived. 2 seconds is massive and if it's 2 seconds up the road from a 458 then many other cars that Porsche has made prior to the GT4 would also be 2 seconds up the road, which hasn't been the case. So you need to qualify what you are reading.

I haven't read it or bothered to check how the 997 GT3 & RS and RS 4.0 compare to a 458 & GT4 on lap time, so i'm willing to be shot down in flames but 2 seconds sounds a lot.

That's the problem for the GT4. It's brilliance is undermined by the over-egging which inevitably leads to corrective comments.

the review was a bit daft , it came out 2nd best to all the cars it was up with, that's not a cynical conclusion, that's how it was ! but then they were better cars in that class.

The 458 time was pointless, Cup2 vs a 78k miles tracked 458 on used mismatch tyres !!! totally pointless !!

Was a daft read imo. Does not make the car less great , it was just pointless !

it read to me if you want a more pure car buy the Exige, if you want to pose, buy a super car, etc etc if you want a good value car which is 80% in all area's and don't want to own 4 cars or even 2, the GT4 does everything very well but not quite as good as a car made for that area.

I think Mags have gone manual bonkers and forget every thing else !!

Agreed D.

Not to detract from the overall excellence and value for money of the GT4, but the mags always seem to lose their objectivity when the new kid on the block arrives. It usually takes a little while for everything to settle down and for more realistic appraisals to appear in the press.

and we thought buying a GT4 was difficult in the UK. From a USA customer on Rennlist

My local dealer/SA asked me if I would be interested in a GT4 back in May of 2014. I still hadn't taken delivery of the GT3 yet, but I said, sure. He made a note of it and said that he would get me one. In March of 2015 the GT4 was official and I confirmed once again with my dealer that I wanted one. I was committed to the car, but that I also meant I would need to sell my boxster spyder to get one. I asked the dealer if I could sell my boxster spyder, and I was told, "yes, I will get you a GT4". I also clarified with the dealer that they would sell me the car at MSRP. I bought both a used boxster spyder and a new GT3 at MSRP already from this dealer. So I sold the boxster spyder a month later. Months roll by. Allocations come and go. Excuses are made as to why I don't have an allocation yet even though I was told I would get one back in 2014. May 2014. I learn through my various resources that an allocation at this dealership was sold to a customer at MSRP ahead of me. More excuses made. In September 2015 I walked into the dealership to speak to the sales manager to find out what the hell was going on. I was told that the market was hot for this car and they wanted market price for the car. I was offered allocations being purchased from other dealers for 25k over. I wanted one of the dealer's allocations at MSRP like they said they would give me in May of 2014. I was told that the general manager (who is, IMO, a greedy SOB that could give 2 sh*ts about customer loyalty) was not willing to let these GT4 allocations go at msrp. They wanted 'market price'. I walked away mad and frustrated. I trusted this dealership to follow their word, and I got screwed. I should never have trusted them, but they did well by me with the GT3. Because of this mistake, I lost out on other opportunities at other dealerships that I would have been able to enact on. At this point, it didn't look like a GT4 was going to happen because I called dealers across the country with no luck (september 2015). At this point, I decided to call in a favor, which involved getting the actual owner of the dealership involved. The owner made some phone calls, and I was told that I would be taken care of, the next allocation was mine at MSRP, and if any problems arose that I was to contact him directly. Shortly after, I got my allocation and I will admit that all my dealings with the dealer have been super smooth since then. This is not to say that the dealer has been well behaved, though. The same time I got my allocation, and friend of mine, who had a WRITTEN NOTE from the dealer saying that he would get a GT4 at MSRP was told that they could not honor the note anymore. Trust is a serious issue at this dealer. I have a new dealer now. One that has a great reputation, and doesn't gouge loyal customers.

Mr D - Again disagreeing with just about everyone ... Evo ranked the Gt4 No1 for Ecoty - No2 for Tcoty and have now said it gives the best of the best a run for their money in the areas that those cars are renowned for and is the best Porsche in a generation, but Yet the venerable Know it all Mr D ... Still knows best! I don't know why he keeps ownership of a car that he carries and verbalises so much distain for ... or does he just like to stand on the mountain and beat his chest ...! ;) Maybe Mr D should start his own Magazine or Blog and see if his circulation and readership is as prevalent as EVO ... ;)))
