Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

(Went out last night, 12.5 degrees, dry. Pushed more than previously when safe to do so and was very happy with how the car performs, tyres included. Really grippy, involving, accurate.... The only problem is that it really is too fast for the road at this point)

Careful Ian...you don't want to get banned before this year's track outings!

I'm running maximum negative camber front and rear with ARB's at their mid settings, and without lowering the ride height.

I've bought a spare set of wheels with MPSS's and have run these at Cadwell Park and the Oulton RS day, where they performed extremely well --- I think I've posted the score on the G meter at the days ends.

I start at 24psi in the knowledge that I will gently increase the speed and if i didn't have chance to come in --- will end up at around 34 psi --- though I personally have always run at about 30psi hot after two cooling down laps for the PCCB's. At the end of the track day I just add 10lbs to each tyre and they settle close to 32psi cold.

There is a circuit setting that quells the TPM bleating but if you have low tyre pressures after any long stop it won't allow you to set the circular circuit mode before you start, and I then ignore it. It is a peculiar thing.

Agreed on the pyrometer, I need one.

I have just exchanged the PSS's for the Cup2's --- hopefully warmer weather is coming !!

6th June Donny meet up then ?

of course the normal crew with be out 21st May in wales which I am looking forward too.

I love Donington. I believe this is a Javelin day which is all well and good but they do tend to allow more attendees than most to keep the price down. This attracts a lot of sub £2k metal and it can be nerve-wracking.

I've no real issue with this, there is definitely an argument in favour of frequent track days in a lower cost car. The last Javelin day I did was at Cadwell a few years ago and the name of the game was to try and find space. If you managed more than two laps without bunching you'd done well. Still enjoyed it but it was definitely different.

I've just booked :)

Yes I'm at Knockhill (a first for me) on the 7th, Anglesey on the 21st and now Donny on the 6th :)

It will be good to meet up --- I've taken a garage just in-case it's wet !

Ian, I'll let you know how it goes ...

Strange that Ian, I've used Javelin at Oulton and had a great day and no traffic problems. A mate found the same with Javelin at Anglesey. I'm checking if I can make this one. [:)]

Steve,

I'll go if you do! Diary clear on that day, keep me posted. Would be nice to see Chris there and the others that are going.

The Cadwell thing, as I recall, was a night-time job, 75 cars and only 3 hours to get your fill so it was very busy. It was also quite cheap which would explain the low-end stuff. Fair enough, no complaints. I vividly remember a Mk1 Nova with a lunatic behind the wheel and a big lump under the bonnet. Stripped out but not a track car - just a shed. Didn't fancy being near him much.

I'm now booked on the Donington day. I think that currently makes 5 x GT4 plus my R. Get yourself booked soon because I believe the Javelin price goes up as the list fills up. Chris has booked the garage so we'll have somewhere for tea and biccies! [:)]

I've just booked as well - it'll give me a chance to check out my brake upgrades. Mind you, the last time I was there I ended up with this -

Quick note.

Just sold mine, couldn't get on with it having small kids.

Just not using it.

Also found it a little slow compared to what i've had before. Think the 4s is a better road car.

I am not sure many on here have yet had a chance to track their cars but the USA experience seems to be that front tyre wear is at least twice that of the rears. Their typical suspension set up seems to be around 2:45 front and 2:20 rear with middle setting front roll bar and hard rear.

It will be interesting to hear what UK track day experience is over the Summer.

For some time we have had no Cayman GT4's showing in the register and so knowing that there are a number of enthusiasts who take the GT4's to tracks etc so must own them I have had the membership check their listings and they found a few more Caymans of various types and so far 3 GT4's ( two in Surrey and one in the West Midlands ) which are now entered into the register list, I have a feeling that our register is short of it's actual numbers and yet other models are well represented, Will everyone please check their entries in their online profiles and update with up to date information please?

Well I had my car setup today, bit of a hassle but have a starting point.

What was interesting was my car ride height was way more than oem ie 7mm higher, I scrape already so it was a shock to find my car rides higher than oem by that much !

I decided not to lower it though, as I said I already have scraping issues !

Geo was just about spot on oem bar right rear toe which was out, that would explain my snap to the left under braking VERY hard which was a shock, it was only just out as well but enough to really unsettle the car under very hard brakes, I just though it was my disks and pads bedding in, but that rear toe being out on one wheel explains a lot. (out by 6 minutes)

I have PDSL in my car so there is a shim (2mm) extra in the car on the LCA for that plus a stock 8mm shim, I then also added another 8mm shim so 18mm of shims up front.

this gave me 16mm more front track which is nice and I got the car dialed into -2.3 camber up front with zero toe in. (if you don't have PDSL buy a 2x 10mm spacers to get the same)

The rear was hassle even with my new toe links (buy CUP ones if any one wants to do this these are 40cm longer than GT4 oem ones ! ) there is a small oem shim in the rear LCA but even with my new Toe links we were still having issues, so then had to add another extra 5mm shim to the rear LCA, I did not want to go crazy with rear camber as my inners are wearing faster already on the oem geo, I see many people goto -2.2 at the rear but I am pretty sure with the rear ARB on full still my car is not rolling as much at the rear to want that much camber, so I have taken a punt at -1.8 camber at the rear and will pyro the tyres on my next track day.

I put rear toe up just a tad to 11 minutes each side, this should make the car stable under hard brakes, and of course the new toe links are monoball so again no rear steer coming from rubber bush's now on that part.

No idea how it drives as the trip home was a river, I needed a boat really ! all I can say is that it seems to brake nice and straight and it drives nice and straight, more to come on the driving front :)

I hated the cars at PEC to a point I was not even looking forward to mine coming :-( , and the snap under braking on my car plus the dire oem understeer, I was not even happy driving mine, I am hoping I can fall in love with the GT4 rather than keep slating it.

even if you dare not change parts which many don't like doing , it's well worth a geo to see if everything is perfect before any track day ! , mine was out so little but still gave me a shock under aggressive braking !

Good info thanks, I'm getting mine checked out/set up at CG end of June prior to Donington, Spa, and Zolder track days. Look forward to hearing your driving impressions following the changes you made in due course.

My car is transformed, it now works, OEM WAS SH!T !!!

Please get a proper geo done, and buy the parts, the GT4's were BAD at PEC like I stated last June, and poor once I got it home since last OCT.

It never wowed me, not once, bar change of direction grip.

It now goes where I want it, and does not push if the slightest bit tested which it did before LOADS !! . Now it's better than me, or so feels it 1st drive out, so I need to learn how to drive better lol.

Not sure how people are getting on who have gone big cambers at the rear, I personally think that's a massive error to go over 2 degree at the back.

I cannot get any heat into the rear outter edge even at -1.8 at the back on the road. but zero toe up front and -2.3 degree camber is a joy to drive fast.

It brakes straight as a die with that extra rear toe in and the full monoball toe links also ;-)

can really push the car now where before it was, well horrid ! why Porsche do this to GT cars is very odd !!

I doubt it will stay like this as it's a 1st go and I want to pyro the tyres on track, but atm it is a BIG change for the better.

so are we now feeling some gt4 love mrd?

what shocked me the other week was driving along slowly and moving the steering wheel side to side there is zero feel and minimum movement unlike my old spyder but that all disappears once speed is picked up!

will a geo improve this?

yes I have more weight to the steering as a bit more caster is a net result of more camber which adds weight.

I also have zero front toe, so not having to fight the car on turn in, it also turns in better due to more front track.

again more camber on the front lowers the ride height at the front, so more weight over the front, again net result more steering feel.

I was really upset with my GT4 at the limit even on the road and esp the PEC cars on track, and I know people do say "how do you see the limit on a road" but the oem pushes so bad the limits were very low and just annoying once you hit them !

I need to drive it a lot more and see how I feel on it's new settings, but 1st drive in the dry with some heat in the tyres it corners far far better and has more steering weight.

unlike our 987.2 cars though where you can feel what road surface you are on, the GT4 don't give you that amount of extra detail the 987.2 cars give.

But in the dry at greater speeds it's ok. In the wet last night on the way home, well , "scary", a boat would have been better, but the roads were flooded with massive amounts of standing water !!
