Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

Do we think that there will new N rated tyres for the Cayman range as a result of the GT4 introduction? The GT4 pictured recently is using Cayman optional wheels so perhaps Michelin PSS or Dunlop SM have been qualified.

Yes, more regurgitated pics from a long way back. PH need to do better than this. On the subject of approved tyres, what N-rated tyres are available currently for the 981 and for the 991, the GT3 in particular? Jeff

Tyres, easier to point you at http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/porscheservice/documentsanddownloads/ GT3 is either Dunlop Sport Maxx Race or Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2

Thanks Ralph. Yes, as I suspected, for the 981 there are only two 20" approved tyres - Pirelli and Bridgestone - so I assume that the GT4 will come supplied with one of those two makes since Porsche wouldn't sell a car without approved tyres. Unfortunately, I can't see introduction of the GT4 providing the additional impetus for Porsche to get their act together and approve the Michelin or Dunlop tyres. Of course, with the GT4's racing pretentions Porsche could well take the GT3 route and spec track-oriented Michelin or Dunlop tyres either as standard or as an option. Jeff

I suspect they will go the GT3 route.

I hope so too, if they do it will be interesting if they stay with standard 981 20" wheel sizes and thereby make better tyres available to all 20" Caymans. Jeff, Whilst we think in terms of UK volumes (991 GT3 UK were only around 200 units) it is the global volume they will consider just as for the GT3. I think 991 Carrera & S Carrera "choice" is still just Pirelli.

Unless it comes with 19" wheels...?

Porsche Cayman GT4 appears once again . . More power, less weight and more drama for Porsche Cayman GT4, spied completely undisguised Porsche is still working on a serious performance upgrade for the Cayman, with images of a range-topping GT4 model reappearing. Spied completely undisguised, this hunkered down and stripped out Cayman is expected to be the most powerful version of the coupe ever produced with a debut expected later this year. The German manufacturer hasn’t done a great job of disguising its latest performance model, with aero-inspired bumpers, bonnet vents and wings there for all to see, removing all doubt that this Cayman will indeed jump straight to the top of the model range. porsche cayman gt4 front bumper The styling very much follows that of the 911 GT3. Gaping air vents, flared arches and a fixed rear wing give us a clear indication that the GT4 will receive the same racecar treatment – cosmetically and mechanically – as its bigger brother. To do that we can expect well in excess of the 335bhp produced by the current flagship Cayman GTS. The 3.4-litre flat-six engine will remain, with as much as 380bhp rumoured – meaning it will surpass an entry-level 911 in the power stakes. It is not yet know if the GT4 will be made available with the option of a manual gearbox but if the Cayman is to stick to the same path as the 911 GT3, a PDK auto only is likely. porsche cayman gt4 rear Akin to a 911 GT3, the Cayman GT4 will also shed weight. Thinner glass and lighter body panels will help cut some pounds, but judging by what we can see in the cabin Porsche’s customary level of comfort and luxury will remain largely in tact. Specific performance and pricing details remain a little thin on the ground but expect a significant premium over the £55,397 Cayman GTS and production numbers to be limited. yes some spotty 20 year old write up with no info and pictures nicked from another site, all be it paid for. NO news, PDK only lol. I guess every website has to post these new pics if they can afford to buy them, Piston heads seems cannot afford them ! we all expected a leaked pic early 2015, it's great Porsche marketing.

I think it would have been far preferable if there had been no leak on the GTS and someone had leaked the dealer briefing on the GT4. The Autoexpress piece could have been written in May 2014. Anyway, we all still thirst for info..

Yes, clearly there's very little news around at this time of the year and regurgitation of old news is on the menu. With that in mind [it's probably been mentioned here before], here's an interesing series of posts on what's involved putting the 991S engine in a 981, including time and costs from the tuner BGB Motorsports: http://www.planet-9.com/981-cayman-boxster-modifications/90731-whats-involved-putting-991s-engine-981-a.html Some impressions of a converted car here, although there are others: http://rennlist.com/forums/987-981-forum/779407-impressions-of-my-981-boxster-w-bgb-3-8l-991s-conversion.html All very positive stuff, and bodes well for the GT4. Jeff

There is one other alternative tuning route for 981 engines, the TPC plenum, throttle body and piggyback tune. However, the results are not impressive in absolute but it does seem to improve low end torque and top end hp. An interesting aspect of the dyno graphs on post #46 is the way the throttle closes somewhat from around 4500 revs suggesting that this is how Porsche manage to get from Boxster 3.4S hp thru Cayman 3.4S, Boxster/Cayman GTS and on to Carrera 3.4 hp. It does seem that there is untapped hp in the current versions of the 3.4 engine. http://www.planet-9.com/981-cayman-boxster-modifications/95151-why-bjr-only-guy-all-boards-tpc-atmos-355-981-a.html There is one guy in Germany who is working on a parallel path as BGB who claims to have seen 380 hp on his Cayman S with his special mapping, and another who claims to have replaced the 3.4S mapping with GTS mapping on several Cayman, using a developer version of the PIWIS. The one thing that looks absolutely clear, no-one looks like cracking the latest ECU and only piggy backs will work. Further that these require fairly specific maps so that as BJR observes, fitting a Cargraphics header requires a new TPC tune to get much benefit. And finally, as our cousins say, "no substitute for cubes"

the wait is getting shorter, I have just been given a earlier embargo date when every thing is released, will soon need to stump up the money to keep my top slot ! then I guess I can order the car the day after ........
