Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

ORIGINAL: ralphmusic
ORIGINAL: Motorhead All this depressing talk about buying as an investment, selling slots, etc., makes me fear that this post is being hijacked by accountants Jeff
Oi Jeff, I started as an accountant... and look what good it did me
Both Cayman ownership - after a 997GTS - and regular postings on this forum trump past digressions Ralph... Jeff

ORIGINAL: CLIFFWILKINS GT4 starting price looks good but soon adds up. Cliff
Cliff name one single Porsche that the above doesn't apply too [:D] I thought the standard spec car at £65k was very good value for money by Porsche standards and I just find the things that come as standard on so many cars today priced from as little as the mid teens more annoying than having to pay for buckets on a GT4 (eg below is a £14595 Ford Fiesta standard kit spec) Power foldable mirrors with puddle lights LED day running lights SONY DAB audio with SYNC EATC air conditioning Lumbar adjustment Rear privacy glass Rain sensing wipers Automatic headlights Auto-dimming rear view mirror Centre console with arm rest Perimeter alarm Velour floor mats Cruise control

Are the Velour floor mats a no cost delete? The base car only costs £2.75..

So...can someone spec one in Guards Red with buckets and not much else and sell it to me in 2 or 3 years time. [:D] Sound like a plan they will loose in the first couple of years especially if you go overboard on the options list. All might come to those who wait with patience only time will tell. I am sure it will become a classic and rise with age no doubt like so many limited models. Still annoying having to pay for buckets on a GT4[]

Agreed Cliff. I presume that the bucket seats were left out to keep the entry price well below £65k [or the equivalent Euro price]. A small point but I can't understand why an auto-dimming rear view mirror isn't included in the spec for a £65k car. Not really fussed about auto-dimming side mirrors though. Jeff

I see the Club Sport package includes a half cage - that's nice. But the cost is absurd - £2670 on top of the £1907 you have to add for buckets. Sad thing is that most of these will be sold to collectors and speculators and never get anywhere near a race track. BTW you can fairly easily buy an early 997 GT3 Cup for less than one of these. Chris.

Boxey totally agree, though i will have mine in the yellow thanks. Spec with buckets and clubsport pack looks perfect to me. Sadly I think many of them are going to get spec'd up. Which will be ironic as i suspect the ones people will go for in a few years time will be the less spec'd up ones. Spyderman SSSSShhhhhhhh[;)]

Laurence/Steve, Has this become an extension to the 964 forum chaps? Good to see you lurking on here. Stick around! Jeff

I rang my local OPC to enquire and was told they are all sold and that there will only be 200 in the UK built over a 2 year period. They have been allocated 6 initially and have deposits for 13. The salesman said "I'll take your money but you won't get a car". Everything I have heard and read so far stated that was not the case. If its true and you have not paid your deposit may as well forget it and wait for someones second hand car. Geoff

I have been saying 200 cars for about 2 months, it should have not come as a shock. Seems daft some OPC were taking 20 deposits !

I know, MrD. But the actual announcement of the GT4 has brought new recruits to this post from other forums. It seems as though PCs are just raking in the money with virtually no chance of delivery in the next 2 years, or more. No change there then..! I presume that you've actually secured a slot for delivery this year. Jeff

Yes. Following this story with interest. I think this one is going to be a cracker. [:)]

nope, I am going to see the DP today and just plain ask, am I getting a car and where am I on the list real Porsche list. take this example , hypothetically, a OPC has 3 sales guys on commission based bonus, each sales guy have their own clients who they look after and need sales. say each sales guy has 4 GT4 clients so 12 deposits, if sales guy number 3 who knows his guys were 9 th and 10th on the list came in early and put his clients on the Porsche system befor sales guy A who had his 3 clients and his were 1,2,3 at said OPC but he did not manage to put his guys on the Porsche system till say 10am who gets the cars ? the person who was 2nd on the list or the person who was 9th on the list but his sales man was savey and put him on at 8.30 am ? it's crazy not knowing but paying out £5k and trying to plan what to do, I need to sell 2 cars to buy a GT4, what if I sell both and the OPC says "no car for you" I cannot buy my R again it's too high a spec to ever come up again, my GF will go mad because I sold the JCW and I will go mad not having the R or a GT4 !!!! it's ok for these rich types who have 15 cars, but for the man in the street who works hard to pay the bills and has to plan 4 months ahead and has to sell a car before buying another it's not fair imo. IN theory yes I should get a car, I was 2nd and my OPC is good to me, but I feel sick spending this amount of money and the above thought going though my head and atm being £5k less rich and at this time of year for a sole trader who has just paid 1.5 years of TAX ,£5k would be better in my account atm not Porsches.

Hi same quandry as me, I already have a nice 997.1 GT3, do I sell it and add another £10-£15K towards a new GT4. I am 2nd on the list at my OPC and I know I will get an early car, but they want the spec and £5k this weekend. Its quite a decision for me, as I am on my 2nd GT3, having regreted selling the first one ( 996 Mark 1). Just drove my GT3 to work this morning to remind me why I like it so much... it just doesn't run out of torque, the Cayman GTS I drove last week (As close to a GT4 as I could get), was fun ( PDK), but just runs out steam compared to my GT3. Decisons, decisons.. Charlie

I can certainly sympathise with your situation MrD but can't really offer any advice other than to lay down your concerns to your sales rep and, if necessary, get his manager involved who will be in a position to arbitrate between his staff. Charlie, you'll never know if you've made the right decision unless you just do it...! I think that you'll notice the torque improvement with the GT4's 3.8L engine over that of the GTS's 3.4L. Good luck to you both, whatever decisions you make. Jeff

I think AP in the Evo interview made it clear there would be more GT4's made than GT3 - and from www.howmanyleft.co.uk there appears to have been about 200 UK new registrations of GT3 in the first 12mths, so surely there must be >200 GT4, albeit maybe half the total in 2015 given deliveries start June. The whole production will scale to meet demand seems to be actively encouraging the taking of a large number of deposits, unlike the GT3 process where dealers knew more or less when to stop. Seems to have the makings of a PR disaster if OPCs have to refund 90% of deposits taken in the first week! Out of interest howmanyleft also indicates that total new registrations for cayman in 2013 and 2014 was 1450-1550 cars p/a for all model versions combined, compared to 1700-1800 new registrations for all 911 models combined. So Porsche make and are able to sell more 911s than Caymans in the UK. As above AP said there would be more GT4 built than GT3, and logically as per the Cayman-v-911 stats above there should be less customers for GT4 than GT3, and so availability must surely be better? Shouldn't it???

Cayman 4 flavours (just) 991 probably well over 20 and rising [;)]hence the numbers of 911's are greater (just)[;)]

Charlie If you find you are allocated a car and decide not to proceed please let me know because having rang another couple of dealers they will not take deposits until they have a better understanding of where they sit going forward. I would probably look to sell my RS to clear most of my mortgage as its increased in value quite a lot since I bought it but only if I can get into a GT4. Its got the right spec including the manual box and should be good on both road and track. I am now not driving the GT3 enough after covering 7K mls in 18mths for fear of loosing value and the track day excess should anything go wrong is something I cannot afford as all my savings are in my toy so I should probably listen to my head rather than my heart now there is an alternative.
