Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

new Bucket info the 918 have been put back another month, so only OCT builds onwards can spec the 918 style.

For anyone who's still undecided, here's a useful comparison of different shades of blue - 4 cars lined up in the sunshine:

Sat in the GT4 at Goodwood the so called sport seats have a much higher and rounded bolsters and to be honest felt like sitting in buckets.

The clutch is surprisingly heavy AKA 996 GT3 weight.

The rear wing takes some getting used to at first glance.

Cheers Cliff.

Cliff,

I still rather like the darker blues myself: Saphire as a "standard" colour [only £558] and Voodoo [a whopping £2,832..!].

Interesting to hear your impressions of the GT4 at Goodwood. After all the fuss and bother with the buckets seats maybe the standard sport seats will be an ideal compromise. Cheaper too..!

Jeff

The 918 style sits lower, the gt2 folding sits higher than a sports seats.

This is quite a big change in favour of the 918 style seat as many say the gt2 esp if you are tall is too high ( even though some people who go sports seats say the bucket is too low lol ) and then the 918 style has the electric height adjust.

Good point D and for some a good reason for holding out for the 918-style bucket seat.

On another point, I note from my occasional vist to the Are Spyders...etc that there's a lot of circular banter about the 981 Spyder versus 987 Spyder versus 981 GTS, each having its proponents and opponents. Granted, the GT4 doesn't have a 987 predecessor but it seems to me that everyone here is more than happy with their choice of car - be it a 987, 981, GTS or GT4 - since I'm not seeing a "why do you want that rather than that?" discussion line. Mind you, that doesn't stop some of us being envious of those actually getting a GT4..!

Jeff

Jeff,

Here's one to be envious of..

If correct, am I allowed to use words such as ???? -- Clearly not !

Tedious doesn't come close .... I wonder if they'll deliver it on wets ??

Yes Chris, what a mess. You'd have thought that a couple of months on that Porsche would have been able to sort out any availability problems with their seat supplier.

It seems as though UK cars are now trickling through but with so many cars being winter deliveries the Michelin Cup 2 tyres will be far from ideal for owners planning to use their cars then. I wonder if Porsche will allow them to spec different tyres? Most new Porsches seem to turn up at the dealerships with whatever tyres the factory had available at the time of build rather than what the customer may have requested.

Extract from the GT4 manual:

Development Philosophy

Porsche Cayman GT4 stands for a sports car with exceptional performance, both on the road and on the race circuit. This objective means that, in the event of any compromise being required between sportiness and comfort during the development process, the tendency will be geared more towards sportiness. This can result in the following restrictions in comfort: – Brake squeal when light pressure applied to the pedal shortly before stopping. – Cracking noise in area of front-axle coil springs. Aerodynamic-related extremely low vehicle position with restrictions in terms of groundclearance.

Mind that front lip..!

Does the 918 seat issue apply to people who have already spec'd their cars, like I did, some months ago? I know two other people who have specified 918 buckets with July and September build slots, and none of us have been informed of delays or failure to supply the seats.

Ian,

I would imagine that if you've got a guaranteed build slot the car will arrive to your spec, unless the PC advises you otherwise beforehand.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

October, hopefully early in the month. I keep resisting contacting the OPC for an update as things such as the seats are constantly changing and they won't really know anything certain. Early October really would open up some options before the weather closes-in.

You are right about the colour choice, red with black wheels. I've tried to like silver, without success. I love black but I'm not going there - I'm not a polisher. I've also thought about reverting to the standard colour wheels but I'm sticking with black. This happens to match my 964 RS which I'm keeping but it's not a deliberate matching-up, simply the colour combination that I like the most.

I've chosen a bit of extra leather and a few obvious options but not ceramics.

Good choice Ian - I'm a red and blue man myself, although my 987.2 Cayman is silver which I think suits the older car's shape very well and it's a very easy colour to keep, even looking reasonable on the [rare occasions] when it's been grubby. I rather like the standard platinum finish wheels myself because they show the wheel's detail - less than silver but more than black, but eveything's a personal choice and I'm sure that your black wheels will look good with the red.

With an October delivery you should be OK with the bucket seats. Hope everthing goes smoothly - keep us posted on progress.

Jeff

Will do Jeff. I'll go through the spec one more time soon and i may well go back to platinum wheels, it's a close call. I also like the look of the yellow steering wheel stripe but it's not exactly value for money.
