Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

With extended track use in mind, presumably Porsche has beefed up the GT4 clutch pack without modifying the standard Cayman hydraulic clutch operation. I would have thought that this could/should have been addressed by respecifying the clutch slave cylinder. Or being cynical, maybe Porsche just wanted to put off the daily drivers from purchasing.

No idea, I have my thoughts on prices, but so do many and no one agree's

I think if you DO want a GT4 then wait 12 months. many people will keep them for 12 months imo and move them on at a small £ over list.

£25k is todays overs for an early car, cannot see that staying like that, maybe a bump in April may back to £25k overs for guys wanting them from spring summer 2016, then back to 10k overs in Nov Dec may be !

again depends now many want out ! it's a great car for £75k/85k not for £100k

GT3 I can NOT see going up, the RS IS the car to own, there are too many GT3's and not enough buyers for £140k cars when you have the 540C , 458 and mp12c R8's AMG GT all about for £130k

RS will not be £300k imo.

 
Interesting write up Mr D, I did see you initially getting into the car with a big smile on your face, watched a couple of laps then had to leave unfortunately.

I've had an issue with PCCBs in the past where they've lost their 'bite', it was down to glazed pads after some hard track use, I suspect that's what you might have had on the GT4.

I had a test drive of a manual Cayman GTS a few months ago which I believe has the same gear ratios ?? To be honest it never bothered me at all on the country roads I was on, but I accept for some it may be an issue. I do wonder how many though in the grand scheme of things ??

Steering sounds pretty good to me if you haven't slated it, suspension/set up can be adjusted so that's all good. Clutch to me seemed on par with GT3 when I sat in it and gave it a press.

Overall I see it a pretty decent 'review', don't really read anything in it that's put me off to be honest.

 
Jeff the GT4 clutch is really heavy and thats new as said it might even be heavier than a 996 GT3

If you get a chance try the clutch out but make sure you have had 3 weetabix before.

There appears to be a number of owners who are on there 3rd engine if you look on Rennlist and to an extent on P/heads it seems that there have been a number of cars with scored camshafts they appear to be having the same limp home warning and Porsche are changing the engine and shipping the old engines back to Germany for investigation. The forums imply its oil starvation with cars having problems oiling at high revs. I'm told they have reduced the max revs on the RS to 8600rpm so not sure if its connected. There does not appear to be any issues over changing the engines but of course all cars are under warranty. I guess we will have to wait and see if there is another recall.

Porsche development appears to be having problems recently with engine fires, this problem and the centre lock wheel issue.

Lets hope it gets resolved quickly.

Horses for courses - in the same way you make observations about the compromises as a road car evidenced in the GT3, for my regular 316 mile return trip to Cornbury House, the 981 is just fine thanks.

Somewhat surprisingly, adding over 15k miles to my Cayman in 15 months has not damaged its value and cars are currently being advertised at Porsche Centres for more than I paid for mine with even higher mileage! Spyder values are very mileage sensitive and the big 4 year bill for warranty renewal, major service, spark plugs, air-con, tyre gunk plus brakes and tyres means I'd have been well out of pocket too.

Granted the Spyder has its moments, roof down, sun shining, and on track but in a dreary November traffic jam on the M6 I'd rather have PDK, my roof and heated leather seats. [:D]

Apparently not Geoff. According to Andreas Preuninger:

It’s 200rpms off, but it’s not that it cannot do the 9000rpm, it’s just that there’s no point, because with a longer stroke your power curve drops… it should explode up to the redline, and then you have to shift.

If you close your eyes – which you shouldn’t do while driving the car – and rev to 9000 or 8800rpm, you will have a hard time recognising the difference.

A longer stroke also implies a higher piston speed, so that may have also been a factor to improve durability.

I doubt the great man could say we dropped the rev limit because the engines blow up with continued use at max revs.

I'm told 4 of the ring taxis have had 3 engines and although I have taken this thread off track if anyone is interested take a look on Rennlist forum under

For those who want maximum roll cage protection, the full race configuration is shown below.

It is not obvious to me what body modifications were required, anyone know?

 
It looks as though the front half of the cage just bolts on to the Clubsport half-cage Ralph, so only the additional front mount bolting points have to be incorporated in the BIW.

Hopefully we'll find out sooner rather than later when the race car arrives.

Quite like rare small build cars, and it seems daft to use the flip money to flush down the toilet in depreciation just because it's free money.

Might as well drive a early car around for a bit, should be a bit of wow in the village in Yellow and that wing. Will use it till mid Summer and see what prices are and MP12 prices are doing then, also might have a chance to drive the new R8 by then and 488 Ferrari price might drive down 458 prices.

Should get mine in 8 or 9 weeks so will get to use it before salty roads etc, norm Jan Feb round here.

My R is still a great fun car so means I can keep that for another 6 months as prices have held very well if not gone up.

 
The only cars I can see worth replacing the gt4 with cost twice as much and way way out my price range even the gt4 is a bit out my comfort zone as I have always said £50k is the max I would want to spend on a car, plus also as a package the gt 4 is also a lot cheaper to run ! I don't think any Audi will cut it even the r8 v10, if I was swap out it would be for comfort ie a 991 Gts which if there is a premium on the gt4 then a nice new preregd 991gts is only going to cost me a few quid more and with in my realms of affordability and running costs would be no more expensive infact will be cheaper with the RFL difference

 
Sensible decision D. Pointless just basing your decision on hooning around the PEC for a few hours. What you need to do is evaluate the car in everyday use for an extended period and for the occasional track day and then decide if it meets your needs.

In the short term, I doubt that you'll lose money.

Just my tuppence worth though.
