Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

This I like....classy. Even though I usually prefer the standard platinum-coloured wheels.

Looking at the GT4 at today's Althorp display, the front spoiler lip is very low but I noted that there are shaped aero bodies on the underside in front of the wheels which reduce the clearance even more to ~55-60mm.

Watch out for those ramps and speed bumps chaps.

Just out of interest, does anyone know how many cars have gone to so called Premier customers such as those who've purchased 918s?

Hi Jeff, as ever it was good to see you, I would have liked to speak with more who attended but often when I became available people had moved on and I did speak with quite a few which was good, also good that many who wanted to speak were owners of the 911 range who like the mid engine layout of the Cayman, one who I spoke with at length owned a 991 GTS but it's no surprise that 911 owners are moving to Caymans, I have had a few new register members who have done so, they're usually the fast road or track drivers rather than those who just must have a Porsche and think there is only one Porsche! The fact is that whether we prefer Cayman, S, R, GTS or GT4 the Cayman is a better driver's car than the equivalent 911.

 
Good to see you as well Kevan and great to see a decent turnout of Caymans at the National event.

As Cayman owners, I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that many 911 owners - aside from those with terminal 911-myopia - are becoming attracted to our cars due in part to the 981's more sporting lines, better value and the breadth of the 4-car lineup from the 2.7-litre Cayman to the GT4. Plus, its mid-engine layout makes it an ideal track car. Porsche's best-kept secret could well be out of the bag - at last..!

I hate to be controversial, but why not allow people to say what they want to without your endless "qualification" -- which may need to be qualified .. ??

 
Not that the usage thresholds are low, but this from the GT4 manual on track usage is interesting, reminds me of the centre lock issue. Presumably it is only applicable to GT4s although an annual oil change makes sense anyway on a regularly used vehicle.

Agreed Ralph, it does does smack of the centre-lock debacle. Mind you, you'd have to be doing an exceptional number of track days to rack up that mileage in the short term, although it could prove to be an issue further down the line; by which time the car's out of the factory warranty period, so Porsche couldn't care less at that stage.

Just a liability issue I think.

pff.de + story on Rennlist suggests many different permutations but road GT4 with PDK a stong maybe...

 
No Doubt you'll agree with me Ralph that it's about time, I just watched the PCA GT4 walk through that you posted and it does look to be a very nice car so PDK would just make it better.

If it has PDK I would rather have a 991 GT3 with PDK-S and 475bhp

If they make a CS spec which is 100kg lighter and has PDK-S then it would be a good idea and they can race it.

I don't see the point adding normal PDK to a GT4 as it stands not after the hype of making a drivers car and all that !

But then I have said it many times Porsche are NOT about making cars, they are about making money hence my drift away from them of late.

With a few more years to develop the 981.2 GT4 I'd be very surprised if, along with more power, PDK wasn't included in the mix. I'm not sure that the current "bargain" price will survive the upgrade though.

I had my GT4 drive at the Porsche experience centre today and thought I would pass on my thoughts of the car from a non or very occasional track day user, my car will be mainly for roads.

All these thoughts and opinions are mine, we all have different tastes and ideas.

First car I drove was the yellow German plated one, complete with the 918 buckets, PCCB, no air con.

No air con was a big mistake, with an outside temperature of 14.5 the inside was extremely uncomfortable after only 45 minutes.

The PCC brakes were excellent, with plenty of feel throughout and from what ever speed.

The buckets, well I had already removed them from my specification, didn't gel with them at all, they felt wide, which for me gave a bit to much upper body movement, uncomfortable, but that may have been sorted with adjustment or the heat but the worst bit was getting out of the car, with the steering wheel low and the seat raised a little it was a big struggle to get my legs out between the seat and steering wheel, again this could probably be sorted with playing around with the adjustment.

My biggest concern before my drive was the manual gearbox but it was in fact no problem at all and I enjoyed using it.

Overall I was very pleased with the car going through all the various sections of the centre, it had plenty of power and an immense amount of grip.

I was interested in driving it on the road, to which they found me a road going GT4 finished in black with 18 way sports seats, PCCB and ( hoorah ) air con .

On starting up this car sounded better with a deeper sound, whether that was because this car was a production car and the Yellow one was a pre production car, I don't know.

Any way onto the open road we went and all can say it was a joy to drive, but the seats were more comfortable and the air con made the cabin very tolerable.

The power deliver around the twisty roads was superb and it handled like a dream, you could live with this as a daily in this specification.

The only problem on the road that I had, was going from 4th to 3rd with the close gate, I missed the gear a couple of times but my daily car is auto and my 991 a PDK, so it is something I need a bit of practise at but overall the gearbox was a lot easier and much better for me than I was expecting ( I think I would still prefer it in PDK )

After the road driving, we took it back on to the handling circuit, all I can say is that I was more than happy, it seemed as where ever I put the car going into a corner it just accepted it.

The instructor for my day was fantastic, he let me drive the car as I wanted and helped me with his knowledge of the car and circuit.

but bar the long gearing quotes as normal, the car got an amazing write up by EVO which is good to see.

And as Jethro is a true driver imo and the 458S is one of his fav cars,

for him to say

"Its focus is absolute, It's performance is thrilling and has just the right amount of rabidity to call to mind the GT3 car or even cars as frenetic and relentless as the 458 Speciale, And yet it also feels physical and old school at lower speeds..Almost the best of both worlds Its a special car !

great write up as it happens, cannot wait to see for my self on the road.

Thanks for your comments and good to hear that you're happy with your spec choices and the car as a whole. You'll just have to get used to using your left arm and leg to change gear again rather than your finger tips I'm afraid. Welcome back to the ancient tribe of manual-dwellers....heading rapidly towards extinction I fear.!

Well good new boys

went in a production GT4 today

clutch was much lighter, the brakes worked and it had a proper geo with -2 camber up front,

like a whole new car vs the flawed PEC car I drove.

excitement back again ;-)

 
Maybe the PEC car was pre-production D.

Anyway, glad to hear that the production example is more to your liking.
