Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

Yes, I had the FULL car done, every panel (inc' roof). There was a clue in my original post where i said 'full'.

 
Great looking car Steve, be v. interested to hear your thoughts when you have had a bit of time on some dry roads.

looks good, shame they cut the vid short only showing front wings and PU, £2.5k was very good value then esp as you had a detail also.

 
A very fair and balanced appraisal Jeremy, and the car looks - and sounds - good on those (Welsh?) roads.

Interesting that he picked out the 918 seats as being good for the twisty stuff but that he wasn't looking forward to the Motorway journey back home and that the big rear wing impedes rear visibility and makes parking difficult (hampered further by a lack of rear parking sensors). If those are the only criticisms, that's pretty good in my book.

poor review imo

what a load of cock it does nothing to those area's so makes the whole review pointless in any thing he has to say.

 
A bit harsh D, because he did make some relevant observations and the scenery made a change from the normal test track hoons.

I was surprised to read on Porsche's site that -

The SPORT button activates automatic throttle-blipping for downshifts and provides sporty gear changes.

Pretty pointless then if you can heel-and-toe and perhaps a missed opportunity to tweak the engine tune and steering a bit more. I assume that it doesn't even activate the sports exhaust if not already activated?

Since there's only one (aggressive?) throttle map and a heavy-ish clutch, it does pose the question: what's the car like to drive in heavy and stop-start traffic?

The issue is this guy is telling us about feed back and how good it all feels, then quotes the sport button increases throttle response and weights up the steering which it does neither !

So you can really say every thing he said other wise was bullshit about feel , harsh but true I am afraid.

Sport button gives you auto bip and makes the oil temp cooler for track, that's it. It's handy on new tracks to give your brain a few laps to get into it.

But a review which is talking about feed back and that it offers more (ie he can feel it) makes a useless report in the 1st place !

And the last bit in the review he said it makes a nice daily if you turn sport off, again why would it ? lol review and makes me quite angry !!!

Yes I can agree that the rear window has limited visibility particularly in the wet, I'm going to try Rainex ....

Looks like I'll need to ask my OPC --- but I won't worry about PSSupersports --- ridiculously I will always be able to re-fit the Cup2 wheel set to satisfy the warranty !!

 
I know what you're saying D, but personally I always take reviews from journos with a pinch of salt (some less than others) and value my own impressions and experience over theirs', given the opportunity.

You're in the very fortunate position to draw your own conclusions in your own time whereas journalists have generally very little time with the cars and then have rigid production schedules to keep. No excuse for shoddy reporting of course, but unfortunately it's what happens too often these days when fuelled by the need to get something out in "the media" ASAP.

Maybe I'm viewing the past through rose-tinted specs, but I'd like to think that journalistic standards were much higher when we only had The Motor, Autocar and MotorSport magazines....

The decals here are a bit marmite - the GT4 logos in particular - but the silver wheels look good with the sapphire blue.

Yellow roll cage..?? Hmmm.

Took mine out today, it's too fast for the road lol the car takes all bends at 85 leptons with no hassle, the grip is hugh.

You can see why EVO did NOT vote the 991 RS car of the year, it's unusable to get fun ! the GT4 really is not that usable to get to fun levels, ok it is usable as it's an easy drive at 60, even at 85 so can be used as transport no problem.

But you look down and in my Spdyer at 70-80 the car felt alive and fast enough ie you are having fun :) , you look down at the speedo in the GT4 and think "O shit" how can this be 85 leptons I am only running it in !!! the cars rock solid and corners on rails (rear ARB is set to hard on mine)

The new cars are mega, but are they now too GOOD ? they have the feel good factor though, it's a show stopper in yellow in my village if you like that sort of thing.

 
I think that's the problem with all modern fast cars D. If you value your licence, realistically the performance is only useable on track which makes driving on the open road a bit frustrating much of the time. And even in the GT4, refinement levels are high so it's easy to misjudge your speed - as you've found out. I sometimes think that something like the most basic Caterham is the way to go - limited power and grip makes for great low speed handling fun.

Sounds as though the GT4's a great tool though.

It's a mega tool, but the R will go down as a future classic imo even if it takes another 15 years, bit like the 964 RS was.

Every thing is better and more solid in the GT4 , but from a fun only driving point of view, maybe less fun !

happy I still have my modded 987.2 Spyder on those nice sunny days.

On track it will be most enjoyable, it's a shame many won't see track work it seems.

I love the GT4 just because it's one of those rare (for me) brand new buys speced just for me, for mr Ave and I love the GT looks and wow factor, the inside is also wow in my spec, people are amazed who have seen it so far, it's stunning inside.

Looking forward to getting the run in miles done and a track day, but atm the GT4 platform may be more suited to PDK, and leave the manual to the 987.2 R and Spyder then you have a nice choice what to take out.

I am really happy with my 2 car garage though, as owning the R and Spyder was much the same car and I wanted to change one of them, But I have to say the R was a stunning car and that tells when I had it so long.

IF I had to sell every thing and had £40k to spend on just 1 car the R would be the car, get them while you still can with nice miles on them. be a great move for you Jeff ;-)

only because I own a 987.2 manual ;-) as I said if I had to only buy one car for £40k as a do every thing sports car it would be an R in manual.

Lucky I have a choice of some of Porsches best ever mid engine platforms to choose from :) and it's was daft to own 3 cars all the same style.

Unfortunatley the CR wasn't available when I bought my CS but it has the 19" wheels, LSD, PASM, Sport Chrono and sport seats, among other things, so not quite as focused as the CR but still a great car to drive, and the spec is what I want. A CR might be worth a long-term punt if nothing happens on the GT4 front.​

Just an aside:

Does anyone know what's going on with the smilies at the moment? I notified one of the Administrators but nothing seems to have happened to rectify the problem.

Best avoided I think.
