Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

Picked the car up Thursday and drive home in the pouring rain, Saturday drove to Morton in the Marsh, again terrible weather, standing water the lot, but must say, the tyres worked a lot better than I was expecting and the drive back was fantastic, not all the roads were dry but at least most were and no rain.

Changed the wheels over last night to a black set with P Zero's on, in the end it was the only tyre I was happy to buy that carried the N rating.

When reading the manual I came across the page where it recommends using 2 Porsche alloy wheel locating guide tools if you have PCCB's fitted, although it does state that they are not supplied ( eBay to the rescue ) which is a bit odd when they supply the jack and everything else, but I wouldn't have been happy or even if I would have managed it without them, the scissor lifts makes it a lot easier though.

Today I took the car back to the OPC to have a tracker fitted, the traffic going was very heavy, stop start, stop start, it was the first time I became aware of the clutch feeling heavy and causing a little back ache.

On the drive back I altered the seat and kept dropping it out of gear when stationary, even for a short stop, I hope this helps, must be a wimp with lack of leg strength after driving PDK's.

Next job, Xpel film being fitted to bonnet, wings, bumper, sills and rear arch followed by polish the rest of paintwork and protect with Gyeon Mohs+ and glass coating

@SteveJC "I guess the punchbag helps the upper torso, biceps and triceps. Hence the weaker legs !"

I'm loving my GT4 .. the traction is great; revving up to 4000 revs provides ample power, and the exhaust sounds are addictive. Changing down from 3 to 2, in layman's terms 'the back burble' is amazing !

I love this car !

Steve,

Maybe you should take up kick boxing..!

I'm very envious of your garage and the scissor lift in particular.

Even with my standard cast iron discs I've found the wheel location guide pegs a boon when removing and replacing the wheels.

Jeff

Are the Pilot Supersports N rated yet ?

Or are they only N rated in the CGT sizes ??

On a more serious note, which wheels did you use ???

Tnx, Cx.

On a more serious note, which wheels did you use ??? The only wheels of the correct sizes etc I was able to find were genuine Porsche Cayman ones, hence as my original ones were Platinum I chose a set of black ones.

The prices of scissor lifts are relatively cheap at the moment with several second hand ones kicking about, you can even buy 4 post parking ramps at good prices but I found out of all the different types of ramp available, overall the scissor worked best for me. If I used it a lot more and money was out of the equation I would have gone for a single ram post lift.

A very neat job Steve - I like the way you've sunk the lift into the floor so you can just drive the car over it. Just as well with the GT4's limited ground clearance..!

I note that like some other owners you're planning to plastic coat quite a lot of the body. The sills do look very vulnerable and I'm suprised that, unlike the 987 Caymans, there's no protection around the side intakes. As you've probably found with your 991, the area behind the rear wheels comes in for some serious pebbledashing as well.

I presume that N rated Pilot Supersports still aren't available. Were the P Zeros the only approved tyre available for the GT4 wheels?

Jeff

Correct on all counts

No protection on the rear arches and my 911 suffered quite badly, hence this one being protected. The down side of the film is cost, it's vastly over priced for what it is and cheaper to have the bit's painted but then it looks a mess in your ownership till resale time. I had decided against it but someone I know as come up with a very good deal so thought why not.

Couldn't find any other tyres of the correct size and specification other than similar to the Cup 2's, prices were good though, in the end the best price I had was from the OPC, I will admit the black wheels look good on the yellow car, they make the callipers and discs look more defined.

Likewise, I've gone for Xpel, including the Rocker panel as yours, don't think that is a bad price just that they are all expensive for what it is.

Mine should be finished today, then hopefully all ready for a little early morning run Saturday or Sunday.

Sounds like a sensible and reasonably priced investment for those vulnerable panels D.

Just out of interest, any idea what the cost would be for the whole front end: PU, bonnet and wings? I'm guessing that it would be similar to the cost of a front end respray.

Jeff

I had Suntek fitted by Paintshield a couple of weeks ago who in my experience are the best in the business as there is no trimming on the car, I had Xpel on my previous car which was good but the Suntek has moved the game on now in terms of finish but both are self healing.

Paintshield also offer a 4 year comprehensive warranty even though both Suntek and Xpel products are supplied with a 5 year warranty it is a limited warranty and only against manufacturer defects so basically it's worth nothing.

List price for Xpel, well one of the list prices, seems to be a few, plus the list price you see is in Dollars and just the Dollar sign changes to Pounds, plus fitting of course. These prices were from a local Zpel approved dealer who install it in their workshop. Don't get me wrong, they are good products but expensive, did I say expensive again.

Rocker Panel Kit £249.95

Full Hood, Wing & Mirror Kit £419.95

Front Bumper Kit £269.95

Thanks Steve.

As you say, not cheap and with fitting it's probably similar in price to a partial respray.

I've no personal experience of wraps but I suppose they provide a more durable finish and I think that the latest materials are self-repairing to a limited extent and don't now turn yellow with time. At least the "new car" appearance should be maintained and I assume that the wrap can be removed without damaging the paint surface.

Big claim saying best in the business when it really comes down to fitter and Paintshiled lost their top fitter to Topaz I am told !

as for suntek vs xpel that's a tough one pro and cons for either.

this post made me go xpel, as you just cannot see it's on, Suntek maybe just as good, but it's all about the fitter imo

its crazy money as people have said £1800 for full frontal coverage £4k for whole car ! and the films not that expensive to buy, all labour.

It is all about labour and fitting, have to say mine is 1st Class and I am very particular! Mine was the 2nd GT4 Paintshield had done.

I have had Xpel previously but Suntek seems to be slightly more glossy imho but not must between them. The seal healing properties on both products are the same as they both use the same product on both to make them seal healing.

I've just had my full car done in Xpel, very happy with results - cost was around £2.5k

Although black isn't my sort of colour Mathew, that looks like a very neat job. £2.5k sounds like a bargain price compared with MrD's quote - one advantage of the North/South divide perhaps?

I suspect that the dark colours are more difficult to wrap since material blemishes and stretch marks are much more noticeable.

I'm surprised that unlike my 987.2 Cayman on which the sills are treated with stonechip-resisting paint, the 981's sills are untreated and therefore very vulnerable. The 987 also has transparent panels in front of the rear intakes, so I think that the "rocker panel" kit is probably a necessary fitment for all 981s.

Jeff

My quote was cheaper VS topaz and paint shield who were £100 per item more per section.

I think the full front end and sills is £1800 from the 2 main dealers, I was quoted £1400 for FULL frontal wings A pillors lights etc.

I had my front PU done in the end for £300 so £650 total. that's a long way from £2.5k ;-) unless £2.5k was the FULL car but it did not show a full install on the vid.

I do find it strange the 981 has Zero extra paint and zero rear film as standard !

I feel far happier with the sill kit on, but it's still crazy money !

I think that the front PU's always vulnerable D, and £300 isn't too bad a price to pay for the paint protection.

I still can't really believe that we're talking about body wraps on a Porsche GT car post..! Best left to the Spyder boys I reckon.

Moving on, this pic has been unashamedly plagiarised from PH. Looks as though the car was pleased to see the owner ;-)
