Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

Just an aside:

Does anyone know what's going on with the smilies at the moment? I notified one of the Administrators but nothing seems to have happened to rectify the problem.

Best avoided I think.

Jeff

No idea. I thought that there was something up with my PC until you mentioned it!

It's a mega tool, but the R will go down as a future classic imo even if it takes another 15 years, bit like the 964 RS was.

Every thing is better and more solid in the GT4 , but from a fun only driving point of view, maybe less fun !

happy I still have my modded 987.2 Spyder on those nice sunny days.

On track it will be most enjoyable, it's a shame many won't see track work it seems.

IF I had to sell every thing and had £40k to spend on just 1 car the R would be the car, get them while you still can with nice miles on them. be a great move for you Jeff ;-)

I disagree I would say save yourself £10k and get a 987.2cs on standard suspension and 18" wheels!

whilst I thought the spyder excellent the R disappointed me on so many levels!on launch they could have given it so much more but ended up being(to coin a MrD phrase) a CS plus like the current 981GTS!

the fact I wanted a coupe after i finally realised a soft top is not for me so the spyder although one of the best cars I have ever driven had to go so a Gt4 was the only new car to replace it with and if I decide to move the gt4 on I might look for a nice late low miles 997.2/987.2cs manual no PASM (if I can find one)as a good allrounder as none of the new stuff does it for me I am still not even sold on the look of the gt4 to be honest or any 981/991 come to that!

So much more on the R would have made it another pointess GT car ! I thought it needed more on launch but after owning GT3 I am so glad they did not add more to the R, it's pretty much perfect as it was and hence now does have a small following.

the Issue with the non R is it just does not feel like an R and is a falling asset, the bespoke SUS on the R made it, so you could buy a £20k 987.2 car and add the £1.5k R sus set up, but it's still a car which will never be an R and will for ever drop in value.

Absolutely agree D........the 987.2 R is astounding value at £40K and set to become a future classic for sure.

At the moment I am torn between selling mine next Spring or hanging on to it for another year.

I'd love a GT4, but even supposing my OPC could oblige with an order, it's still another £30K on top of my fabulous manual CR.

Need to think about it over the winter......

Brian

you are welcome to come and see, go out in my GT4 its surprising how different they are now.

Some people are saying 100% better in every way on the Spyder and GT4 but I am a realest and always offer a more subjective review when I get a new car as they are just metal after all.

And because I use mine hard (well not hard but I don't hang about ) and as a daily you get to learn it a lot more.

The new GT4 is the 1st of a new sort of car, which means every new car could be better ie the next GT4 should be better, learning from the old car, better steering, more power etc etc.

The R went though the 987 cycle and was the last of that sort of car and the best it could have been within reason for the money and being a non GT car.

Steering is said to be better again on the new 911 and we all know the throttle does NOT open 100% on the new GT4 and it should have 420 BHp !! so room to drip feed more BHp for the gen 2 car and RS models.

EVERY one will sell a GT4 for a gen 2 GT4 it's a no brainer, you get overs on the old one to allow you a new one which will fetch overs so you just do it.

where the R is what it is, last of a car with perfect steering, a real diff, real dampers etc etc so it's a hard car to sell if you like that sort of feeling as NO new car offers that.

I could not sell my Spyder unless I bought an Elise for the weekends, I do like that extra bit of connection with out going daft with a Caterham etc.

The only reason I sold my R was I owned the Spyder, to sell a 987.2 R or Spyder to go new would be a very hard choice to make. (again unless you bought an Elise for the weekends)

Can't argue with your logic D and a (lightweight) 987 Spyder and a GT4 make an excellent combo.

The only problem is that you have 2 track-oriented cars and will have to decide which one to take where. Decisions, decisions..!

How are you getting on with the GT4 as a daily drive, speed bumps and ramps in particular? The vulnerable front overhang and lack of rear visibility must be a bit of a pain without parking sensors.

Jeff

GT4 will see tracks now :)

rear sensors a non issue for me, ride height is more an issue.

Spyder is a high days and show car now, the spec is right and it's a 13k mile minter which was Porsche 1st owner, A nice thing and if any Spyder can be worth any thing 10 years down the line it has to be this one.

So it now take a back step for its 6 year birthday due soon.

GT4 for my planned euro hoon in May :)

Sounds like a plan D.

With their low ride heights and vlunerable front and rear PUs, I'm a bit surprised that Porsche doesn't offer parking sensor options on the GT cars, but I suppose that they're not really designed for the urban environment; and because of the low production rates, I presume that it's not worth the additional tooling costs for the moulds.

All the same, watch out for kerbs when you drive into parking bays.

Nowt like bigging your own car up eh, Demon.

yours will be worth less with no a/c or radio Imo.

+1 you forgot to mention abused ex Porsche gb press car!

but you should know by now all his cars are the best!

Well today I watched as my Beautiful 997 GTS was driven away into the trade - the car was a total minter but sadly its not a GT4 so something had to give and GTS prices are slowly dipping so had to make a tough decision and sell my first and only 911 ... March and delivery of the GT4 can't come soon enough now - its going to be a keeper now!

I'll take a £100 wager with you if you like, why is it 6 years on and people still don't get what the car was about ! hence we see the PDK cars sell on quite quick (owners seem to hate them lol ) and a lot have jumped ship to the more weighty and usable 981 !

Tough car to let go of the 911 GTS, I would never say the car is a keeper, the gen 2 GT4 will prob be a better car and cost nothing to get into for current owners.

You make no sense.

Of course you make sense to you - you're in your own little world.

To normal people not on 'the scale' you talk Martian.

Granted, everyone's entitled to have their say but can we please confine personal snipings to other forums - PH perhaps? - or to PMs.

I'd much rather be reading something relevant to the post's topic.

Jeff

Good Lord....

If it makes you happier, and to be on topic, my GT4 will be here soon and I ain't keeping it.

Fortunately it's not a mistake that's going to cost me.

Pics, ok :) picked up a daily today for winter, now I have decided not to use the GT4 as a daily over winter !

Bit of a Luxury for me. 4wd, DSG with xenons :) perfect winter hack for lazy days with a bit of poke.
