Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

The manual mentions the cracking noise from the front suspension, it is not a fault as such.

My main (only) gripe is the electric handbrake which is in a crap position and can be grabby. I tend to not bother with it except when parking.

Steve, I'm rather glad that in this paddle-shift world the GT4 is (currently at any rate) manual only. Destined to become a future rarity perhaps? Of its kind, Porsche's PDK 'box is an excellent example, but I still think that a good manual 'box is more involving and satisfying to use, particularly if you perform your own heel-and-toe downchanges. A paddle shift manual 'box? - isn't that what you get if you leave the PDK 'box in manual mode and use either the stick* or paddles?

Ian, thankfully my 987 has a proper manual handbrake and on the odd occasions I've driven a 981-series car I've hated the electric handbrake, its location and counter-intuitive mode of operation in particular (push to engage; pull to disengage - what's that all about?). A sign of the times, and an opportunity for the centre console designers to add yet more buttons to the space vacated by the handbrake..!

* Gripe #2 - That operates back-to-front too. Push to change up; pull to change down. The electric handbrake designer's handiwork again?? Even more confusing is that I think the stick operates the "right" way round on the GT3..!

Couldn't update Spec with PCCB as "Lock out" date was brought forward by 2 days ... Anyway, i am happy - off too PPC today for GT4 drive ... Yee Haaa

Good looking car steve, what did you get covered with the film and what did it cosy you.

Looking to do the same with my Spyder when i get it

starting the GT4 is a pain in the arse lol

sit in turn key. nothing happens. ok so press clutch turn key (I have the clutch switch disabled in my 987.2 car how nice that is ;-) )

then push Hand brake, nothing happens, pull hand brake nothing happens, o shit, push foot on brake, now pull hand brake, nothing happens, push hand brake at last (may be other way round)

so after using all the pedals and then pushing and pulling the hand brake 4 times you can finally pull off :)

this is not a 1 off I end up pushing and pulling the bloody hand brake 4 times every time !

minor niggle I know but I do say to myself FFS every time I try and start it. as for needing to 1st press the clutch and then press the brake it's all quite annoying, what happened to just turn the key and go ?

Saying that I sat in the TTS for about 10 minutes the other day, could not get key out !!! car has to be in P to release key, I was staring to sweat a little...... and on that you have to press brake to start not clutch.

So I cannot start any of my cars as all are different and 1st thing in the morning(I am zombie like in the mornings) when you jump in one it's an arse.

I never use the handbrake unless on a really steep incline but then I have PDK [:)] and therefore never have parking brake pads stuck on the drum...

I thought the handbrake automatically releases if you just drive off ??

The one really annoying thing I found was when reversing into my garage, I used to occasionally open the door a little to look back, now the car stops and the brake goes on automatically !!

I think if you have your seatbelt on 1st it releases automatic

I tend to put mine on when moving off not when sitting in garage trying to start it lol ;-(

I open my door to put my car in garage to line up seems ok going forward with a door open.

it's just hard getting into a routine when all the car want different things to even get going, my spyder I just turn key and go, works well that way.

If you put your foot on the brake can't you then release the e-handbrake manually, even when not wearing seatbelts? You can on every other e-brake car I have tried, including (dare I mention it) PDK Porsches.

The handbrake does release automatically when you set off but will sometimes do so with an annoying clunk and I really don't like that so tend not bother with it.

The whole handbrake/seatbelt/footbrake thing is a faff but I'm used to it now.

I was out in mine yesterday having some fun, it was cool and damp but not icey and I'm keen to keep using it before winter sets in. I was surprised how well it gripped (Michelins btw) but when it lets go (at the rear) it can be quite quick but thankfully easy to control. It is throttle related but you don't get the feeling of mass taking over like you do in an older 911 and the steering is quick enough and has enough feel so it's not worrying. Still not getting any understeer, not sure where that rumour came from.

The car does egg you on a good deal which is probably where the poor fuel economy comes from, fantastic car, though.

SC50

I had the bonnet, front wings, Mirrors, bumper, rocker panel and sills, the rocker panel is the bit between the doors and wheel arch where Porsche fit no protection at all.

no rumour, drive faster :) the cars goes into understeer quite early on and pushes with factory set up.

the cars got such a big footprint you really have to being going a lot faster to get to see it's limits though and there lies an issue !

After reading about all that faffing about with handbrake buttons and pedals, I'll maybe change mind about a GT4 and stick with my trusty CR manual.

Just release the handy handbrake lever, twist the key and go.........

Steve.j.c. The passenger seat belt rattle is really easy to fix. Just pull the belt down out of the door pillar a little and push the buckle up the belt as far as it will go .....end of rattle.....you get your life back.

Until it falls down again.. been there and have the tee shirt, unfortunately

Strange it works for me.... been doing a 250 mile commute in my 981 for months with no seat belt rattle since I used this method.

I would agree on the handbrake --- I have the same on a BMW i3 which is far more discrete.

But first thing if you have used the hand-brake you have to release it before setting off --- it will not do so automatically.

My inclination also is not to use it.

Yes the suspension clicks. Yes the roll cage creaks from time to time, yes the full harnesses sometimes rattle a little --- but for what it is, the GT4 is a very civilised place to be ...

Have a February build slot for a GT4 and last night let my 991 C4S Riviera blue 911 go.

Got a fair price for it.

Would like peoples opinion on colour options and spec ??

Have ordered white at the moment...

Welcome to mid engine side of things :)

I don't get why people ask for opinion on colour options and spec ! not being rude as many do think I am due to my posting style lol, but why ask other people what colour you want or spec !! white looks bland imo although the 991 RS looks good in white, silver and DMB look dull, and Black is a pain in the arse to keep looking good (but if you like one of those go for it), so Yellow and red are best ! PCCB seem pointless and you want Buckets seats the 918 type :)

but you might want white, 18 ways seats and PCCB's !

congrats on getting a slot though what ever you spec ;-)
