Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

Very nice Jeremy.

Being the launch colour choice, yellow seems to have stolen the show at the moment, but good to see that there are other colours out there. And yours will have the benefit of being a rarer sight on our roads.

Update on the running-in period ... which is just about complete. Did the Oulton Park Trackday on the 4th. It was wet early in the day and then dried out, giving the car an easy morning and a busier afternoon. This was the data at the end of the day --- with no "offs" --- or understeer. Despite the maxed out negative camber at the rear the whole car is clearly set-up very nicely with no significant shoulder wear on the tyres --- either front or back. I'm therefore unsure how much extra camber it needs ...

Front -1 degree 36', with 02' each side of toe in.

Rear -1 degree 18', with 10' each side of toe out.

I would need 997 GT3 Cup rear toe links to get more rear camber and retain the toe, but as I say, I'm not sure if it's required.

The tyre wear appears to have been very even but it would have been interesting to look at the tyre temperatures across the tread width.

From standard tyre pressures I took out 10 psi and at their hottest both front and rear came up to 35 psi at which the car was starting to move around a little more.

I would normaly run at 30psi hot all round and drop pressures if they run much above 32psi.

 
there is a track mode for the tyre monitor also which is interesting.

Cup 2's stable out quite quick though ,I always run harder rear than front, even Porsche have dropped the GT4 front to 29psi recommended.

 
Chris had a lot of people eager to get in the passenger seat in the afternoon. Andy Fagan being one. Andy knows a thing or two about driving Caymans fast and was mightily impressed with the performance of Chris' GT4.

I managed to blag the last couple of laps (literally) in the passenger seat before the circuit closed. The track was at its driest and Chris was on it for those laps. To me it felt like a hard core version of his previous R with even more front end bite - the car can carry serious speed into corners. I don't think I've been in a car that had so much grip through Island bend (a big balls turn for those that know it). The ceramic brakes are staggering in the way that they can scrub off the speed. But most memorable of all is the howl of the engine behind your head....it's not far behind the aural splendor of the old Mezger lump that was in the previous GT3s.

It's one hell of a car for having fun on track. [8D]

I could read the manual but if you can offer me a short cut ?? it would have been very useful :)

Selecting “Circuits” in the TPMS menu​
For driving on a race circuit, you can set and​
monitor pressures different to those used for road​
mode.​
Race circuit mode is not designed for driving on
public roads.​

customising tire pressure to suit race circuits, for​

Good to hear that the new cars are making their presence felt already on track days.

For those who've not yet noticed, both bucket seat options as well as the black rear wing supports have been back on the Configurator for a few days now.

Who knows why Porsche just can't leave the Configuator alone? Maybe the person in charge of the site is anxious about their job and likes to make it appear to the boss that they're doing something....

Ralph, could that be a picture of someone's own customised Cayman for racing? I was just wondering if they would redo the interior and switches more like the do on the Cup cars?

Not impossible of course which is why I quoted source. Let's see what appears for LA show on the 20th..

(Edit) Given the Clubsport can be run in only a few series mostly perhaps in the USA I wonder if this version is just aimed at some race halo effect and USA Cayman racing/track days in particular, maybe also a toe in the water for a proper FIA race series car later?

Someone's posted elsewhere that because the Clubsport half-cage doesn't include any cross-bracing (unlike that in the GT3) it can't even be used for club racing in the UK (??). I have to say that to me it just looks like an open roll-hoop with two trailing struts incorporating a cross-piece - a rather flimsy affair - which doesn't even incorporate any harness anchorage points.
