Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

I am keeping it :) the corner speeds and change of direction is the key thing on this car like I posted after my track day.

245/295 in the mid engine platform is crazy footprint.

feel is no where near my R or my Spyder though esp in this wet weather.

Excellent news D! Not ideal conditions at the moment to fully assess the car, but the weather looks much better this weekend for an extended drive.

Jeff

A full year almost to the day since putting a deposit down in the hope Porsche would build this car, long before it was announced, and finally my car has arrived... Mmm mmmmm..

(those donut marks are not mine by the way)

Is there hope the new Spyder boys haven't bought the dog with fleas after all because it wasn't offered with PDK:ROFLMAO:

So Mr D, if you haven't sold it by now are we going to get a bit of a write up any time soon, obviously with the warts and all ??

First GT4 engine failure reported as well as one in a Spyder...

A shame we can't read it --- there's no general history of Gen 2 3.8 issues that I have found --- but I'd still like to know the background ...

Comedy translation by my browser :ROFLMAO:

Hi! just wanted to report that my GT4 after almost 6 months and 6,000 km on a new engine of [link=http://www.pff.de/porsche/]Porsche[/link] "donated" scored. The reason was a rattle on the right cylinder bank, coming from one of the two rear pistons. has suspect belongs kipper by a piston / -fresser. engine was not open, Porsche wanted him completely. the exact cause of the rattling so I'll never know. Oil was always with half or a bar over it, no screwdriver (not Level 1 & 2). I am looking forward on re-enter in the spring! Simon PS: Thanks also to My PZ, of the damage assessment are only 8 days have passed through to the finished repair!

The OP just reports that around 6,000km there was a rattle from the right hand cylinder area and Porsche replaced the engine within 8 days. No indication whether used on track use or not. The Spyder reference was by Jens Ehresmann so I would believe it.

I have done more than 6,000 miles with my PDK 3.8L installation and no problems, Jens runs his power kitted PDK 3.8L to 8,150 rpm and has had no issues. BGB in Florida have many miles of experience of PDK and manual 3.8L DFI engined Caymans and rate the engines as very robust. I expect these two on pff.de are one-offs, but I guess we just keep an eye on temperatures.

Ralph,

I suppose that it would be more pertinent to look at 911S engine failures since Cayman 3.8-litres (modified and GT4s) are a bit thin on the ground, but I think that generally the Gen2 engine is pretty robust.

Maybe the posted failure had something to do with the owner not keeping a rigorous eye on the oil level.....and perhaps putting kippers in the fuel didn't help!?

Jeff

Good morning Jeff,

I commented on Cayman/Boxster installations as cooling is less optimal (but not marginal) than in the 911 shell but to your point I haven't seen much in the way of 911 DFI engine failures. I don't think there is anything fishy going on...

Ralph

Here's an interesting comparison: GT4 vs Honda NSX and Ferrari 355.

A potentially iconic vehicle...who knows? Only time will tell.

Jeff

Whilst we all await Mr Demon's review feel free to read this great write up on the alternative 3.8L mid engined thrill maker

GT4 Iconic …. 5000 units no PDK think the R looking more likely …. but hey what do I know[;)]

Depending upon the GT4 CS and non CS question and the ultimate numbers sold, you may be right Des.

There were only 200 CR's and a broadly even split between PDK and Manual.

So if there is no PDK GT4 ... ????
