Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

All this chat about CR prices is quite topical for me at present.

My CR is coming up for sale soon. It's a 27k miles manual, buckets, sports exhaust, short shifter, alcantara trimmings, GT3 brake MC, Goodridge steel braided pipes, Sports Chrono Plus, PCM, Michelin PSS, etc, etc....... I'll not bore you readers with the rest of it at the moment.

Full spec will be posted in due course following the MOT and service next week.

My car is no garage queen, it's driven as it was designed to be driven, and rested during the winter months.

I'm thinking of asking offers over £37,500. Does this sound reasonable?

BTW I live in the Highlands of Scotland, so not in the thick of the population as in down south.

Brian

my advice is keep it :) I wish I had mine still, it's the perfect road car for driving.

It's also the perfect car for tuning ... already started ... Mr D, I would have thought that you could be interested ??

Exactly Chris!

Thus the sensible asking price.

I am hoping my CR goes to a like-minded enthusiast who is looking for a keen driver's spec CR manual which has been meticulously maintained above and beyond the manufacturer's scheduled service intervals. I also have a cache of very interesting and useful "spares" which may appeal to an enthusiast owner.

Advert will be placed soon following MOT inspection.

Brian

if I buy something now it will be a gen 2 GT3, or keep the GT4 and put the 420BHp kit on it and buy a 981 Boxster with x73 for a daily.

not decided

For anyone interested, a pre-view photo of my CR. The advert will be posted in a couple of weeks time.

I am intending remaining loyal to the Cayman range, and a 981 GTS PDK appeals. I'll test drive both the "S" and the GTS PDK's to see what suits best.

Never thought I buy a PDK but health issues dictate. GT4 unfortunately completely out of it. Saw the prices in PH today. Absolutely ridiculous!

Nice view, the hills are not bad either. CR is best of both worlds, for touring and the occasional track day.

Brian

there is a nice red 981 GTS PDK with x73 for sale atm £61k

but GTS seems expensive when you price one up new they are about that, so don't seem good value to me 2nd hand.

better off with a £36k car, fit x73, a 370 BHP kit and the 911 Calipers to it :)

Mr D - I am with you with your thinking of a Gen2 GT3 - or i was thinking even an F430 Ferrari ... With GT4's at £110k suddenly a Prancing horse at £95k seams cheap ... ??!!! There are currently 8 GT4's on Porsche Approved so i think the bubble is about to Burst ... ;( Or you could look at it another way - the OPC's will naturally keep the Price high as they have done for Gen1 & 2 GT3's .... ?!

passive Sports sus set up like on your R. it's standard on the Spyder and a no cost option on the GTS but most have PASM.

OPC call it 20mm lower Sports sus, you get stiffer ARB also

pretty much a must have on a 981 if coming from a R.

quite cheap to retro fit though as a kit, the red 911 Virgin car would be a good one to fit it too as that is sub £40k and did not have PASM to worry about.

but alas the 981 steering is so unforgivable, it's a non starter for me now after another test drive today.

Regarding steering feel I've just bought a set of spare wheels with MPSuperSports on them for the cold and wet weather ...

To my fingertips the feel is noticeably better than the MPSC2's ........ I was surprised at how much tyre flex could be felt towards the limit !

There is a Goldtrack regular (ex VLM racer) who bought his GT4 back in May from Germany who is running 987.2 Cayman R wheels with P Zeros in the wet and he is pretty quick on those. I always struggled with traction with those tyres but another experience for the pot.

Re Chris w comment on the super sports vs cup 2's, sounds like you have helped in my decision on which to go for. I want a tyre that heats up reasonably quick and doesn't need to last.(Hillclimbs). Also the cup2 front tyre is in GT4 size and therefore larger diameter than I want for my 981 S. Interesting that a CR 19" tyre works on a GT4 (RalphMusic) .It would lower the gearing I suppose and lower the car as well , but P zero's that's even more of a surprise.

I got the wheel size wrong..

[/link] Silverstone tomorrow, BBC Weather says it's going to be wet all day, thinking about installing the spare set of 20" Spyder wheels from my previous 981S, equipped with a good set of P-Zero's. Any thoughts, or words of wisdom ? [/link] I threw the Pirellis away as they had very poor traction in damp/wet conditions, particularly out of The Loop and Luffield. I now run MPSS. See you there I'm in 7A. [/link] Interesting ! I thought the P-Zero's were pretty good on the 981S, and found the Cup 2's a little lacking in the wet on my last day at Silverstone ? Anyway I've changed them over now, so we'll have to see, probably all in my head, but I was surprised when in the GT4 Autocar Road Test, the Exige V6 was 9 seconds quicker around the MIRA Wetgrip circuit than the GT4 ( in the wet ) ? See you tomorrow, hopefully in a GT4 ? [/link] Very good to meet GTSralph today and to see his very special car, shame Porsche don't make one to his spec ! The P-Zeros were pretty good considering the acute lack of grip at Silverstone today, very pleased I changed the wheels and tyres over .

...and it turned out it was all in my head! He was much faster in his GT4, experience and youth tell.. and obviously had very good wet lines

They are fitting 19" in the USA, there is quite a lot of info (and usual guff) on rennlist GT4 and 981 Cayman threads plus you might want to look at this thread which includes a discussion about 19"

It's gone very quiet on here lately.

I presume that final allocations have now been made and people are either awaiting delivery in the next month or so or that not many GT4s are in the hands of Club Members who post here (less than 10 cars.??).

I hope that those who have them are enjoying their cars - or perhaps the cooler weather is putting you off driving them at the moment..!

Jeff

been using mine, :)

I went to a few OPC the last few weeks most have 3 or so cars sitting waiting to go out, seems odd people don't want their cars and just want to wait for the new reg !

600 lol not many ;-( but I have a feel for the car and what it's about, needless to say it's not a long term keeper although I'll prob have it over a year and maybe part ex it for a 2017 GT3 if that do a manual and the GT4 gets me a slot with my OPC.

I am on the look out for another Cayman R but with PCCB's, xenons, leather and of course all the other MAIN items it HAS to have, Buckets, Spyder wheels and manual.

the car might have never been made though !!! So a bit of a unicorn ! but if one does come up I feel a project coming on :) with 370bhp and some bespoke 3 ways.

Thanks D for the explanation of X73.

While my CR was at OPC for it's MOT and 4 year service, I had a close look at a Silver GT4 with PCCB for sale in the showroom at £112k. A stunning looking car. I particularly liked the 918 Bucket seats, so comfortable and supportive, and the shorter gear lever provided an even more "rifle bolt" shift action than my CR short shifter. Another yellow GT4 was nearby, the property of an owner awaiting the new registration plates on March 1st. For my taste, the silver GT4 looked best.

Interesting that the salesman said, most, if not all GT4's they have sold will never see a race track. Sad that. Also, it transpired from our conversations, that many owners were indeed "flippers". I have an alternative "F" word that springs to mind for these greedy creatures. I'm a driver not a speculator.

On the topic of 981 steering, I had a CS PDK loan car for the duration of my service visit. A completely different car to my CR. Steering was soft and woolly and lacking in feel compared to my CR. I have a mind to try a 981 GTS to compare, with the sports suspension (X73) as recommended by Mr D. I will be advertising my CR for sale on the forum soon. So look out for my Meteor Grey example with a fabulous driver's spec.

Finally, interesting also the comments about tyres and wheel sizes for the 981 Cayman. I have a spare set of CR 19" Spyder Lightweight alloys shod with Michelin Cup 2's which I intend to fit to my intended 981 GTS for a couple of track days already booked this year. I'm pleased to hear that our fellow Cayman owners stateside are already on to this idea. I now have to wait until I sell my CR, locate a nice driver's spec 981 GTS PDK, and try it with the Cup 2's on the 19" alloys.

Brian

I hope you can live with the GTS steering as a fun thing esp because you have to goto PDK taking the gear change away also, how about a PDK R and giving it 370BHp and a set of plush 3 way dampers :)

When upgrading my suspension, I decided against 3-way adjustable dampers as it seemed a lot of faffing around either under the car or with wheels off adjusting the settings for track then back for road. If a car is not regularly tracked and one has a sensitive bottom I guess it would usefully enable optimised settings.

And whilst I am in old man mode, the main memory I have of my 997 GTS steering was a vibrating steering wheel. I never felt I was getting any real feel of what the front grip was earlier than I get now, although caster angle in my current suspension might be a factor.
