Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

Just clicked through 3000 miles in mine at Cadwell Park on Saturday.

I had fitted the MPSuperSports's for the initially wet and all day cold conditions, and it was fabulous.

However, driving past Bristow Helicopters (a part of Humberside Airport) I had the most massive snaking sideways moment that lasted almost 100 yards --- due to black ice. I feel rather lucky that I didn't have the Cup2's fitted.

I wasn't going quickly and didn't touch the brakes -- just concentrating on avoiding engine braking and collecting the car. Once done (speed bled from around 45 to 35mph) I gently brought the car to a standstill only to find that I could barely get going again !

That could have spoilt our day ... and to think that the PSS's are not N rated.

And no, I didn't crash it on track either ... thought the numbers were quite a surprise for the temperature ...

the best thing about the GT4 is the corner speeds, looking forward to having a go on track in mine.

But I keep away from winter ones, not just because less grip, it's just not a nice day standing about in the cold at any track :)

3k miles is going some :) are you tempted with letting a few horses out the car for 420 BHP and to make it a bet more free reving

Including myself, I know of three people with GT4s. Chris W leads the way with 3000 miles, I'm just behind with 2,750 and my friend/colleague John ha 2,600 on his.

We're not all 'flippers', you'll be pleased to know. Why wouldn't you drive the things - they are fantastic cars, they 'go' much better once they're fully run-in and effectively it's free motoring?

Mine has not had too much use during the dead of winter and I can't wait for Spring to arrive and see how well the tyres perform when it's warmer - preferably on a track. Still no understeer, btw, oversteer is easily available, though.

Bringing it to Anglesey this year Ian? It's Saturday 21st May and we'll stop the night before in the usual hotel.

I'd love to Steve, really enjoyed it last year but there is frustrating date clash (almost) in that the club approved event at Blyton is the day before and is only 20 minutes from home as opposed to Anglesey being close to 5 hours away, allowing for traffic. So I've just entered Blyton.

Blyton is good fun and the event is very friendly although the track is not as good as Anglesey. I can't find many track days that appeal this year so it's frustrating that these two are so close. Plus, with Blyton being sessioned, I've got this silly idea in my head that, if there are any places spare nearer the time, I might double enter with the old car and compare them back-to-back.

That's a shame and very silly of the Blyton organizers to clash with a full club day. The club has enough trouble filling its days as it is. Hopefully, they'll be other opportunities for us to meet up for track days.

Ian,

Good to hear that you've clocked a fair few miles in the car.

Typical.! Although I've enjoyed attending Blyton for the past couple of years, this year I'm planning a trip with a friend to Anglesey. He was born and raised on Anglesey, so we're combining a trip around the area with the track day. Looking forward to it.

Perhaps I can cadge a run with MrD instead.

Jeff

I think I'll leave the engine as it is ... modification is a slippery slope ...

Yes I aim to be at the Anglesey day ... a great circuit :)

Steve, have you started the booking process yet ?

I have ordered Tarett solid adjustable rear toe links, locking kit and shims for mine

aiming to go from -1.5/-1.5 stock front and rear camber to

-2.3/-1.8 with zero front toe and maybe a tad less rear toe. that will give me a duel purpose set up for fast road and not too mental,. but should help on track days loads over oem.

thought I would take a punt at that set up before my 1st track day and gives me a starting point to tweak.

I'll test that set up at Donny in March :)

any Plans Chris ? how are your outers doing atm ?

If you are after some discussion about settings, this thread might be of interest

I find it odd he runs normal setting ARB's

he should go full hard front and rear imo, then you need less camber if less roll.

he also runs dunlops which I hate and binned, so cannot take much from it.

one wants to run as less camber as possible imo.

I will stick to my settings and rear ARB hard, hence only going for -1.8 rear and see what happens, I don't tend to follow the flow.

and pretty much know how I like a car to feel for me.

what did you end up with geo wise ? ALl the rennlist peple are just playing atm as the big players won't share setting which I have pointed out on 2 threads and upset many people !!!

Rennlist is a sales forum though and though , which is a shame, leaving punters in no mans land to any base set up info.

David,

Isn't that last bit why people have different settings. Some are comfortable with a loose rear, some like absolutely neutral, others want something else. The contributions I like are 'my style is this, I have set the car up this way, and it behaves in this way'. At the end of the day, different styles = different settings

Settings still as [link=https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/FindPost/898334]https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/FindPost/898334[/link]

I have some new parts so will shortly be backing off camber by maybe half/three quarters a degree front and rear in search of optimum tyre wear/grip although I have to say after three track days since mid-October the wear has oddly not been particularly high.

I have to say I thought the Rennlist post you commented on and received some responses had a bunch of interesting topics which one can follow up. Clearly DeMan Racing are a commercial organisation but it is no different to visits to Centre Gravity for instance, and of course Rick is going to sell parts and build race cars, but IMO this does not devalue their contribution. The thread I posted earlier today was an example of a committed track day Rennlist 'punter' going through a learning curve and sharing his experiences.

Ralph

Chris @ C/G lets any one post geo's up he has done and is very open and does NO forum sales crap.

DeMan Racing and the others will NOT post up any settings they have done and their thread is a sales pitch 100%, so are their open days ! as are all rennlist sponsers, it's all sales talk !

NO real info gained although the odd bit is interesting, but a lass NO real usefull info coming from it !!!

which leaves punters going though a learning curve which is no good to any one else and paying for 4 or 5 set ups !!!

I don't want to have to pay for 3 geo's tweaking my car, but guess I'll have to pay for 2 after my 1st set up which will be -2.3/-1.8 + less toe in which I have picked out the sky for a starting point !

I'm running the max camber with reasonable Toe to warm the tyres on cold cold days --- I took photos of the shoulders of my tyres after Oulton to show Craig at Track Torque --- he suggested only a tad more camber so as not to compromise road work.

At Cadwell on Saturday the shoulders on the PSS's wore slightly, but probably no more than on my CR and we were going quite a lot faster. For the first time I also used Sport and Track settings (on the PASM), and the car felt very sure-footed.

And I'm using mid ARB's front and rear. So almost standard all the way !

The danger of hard ARB's front and rear is that you lose feel ...

Which Donnington day were you planning to do ?

P.S. Looked at the set-up data from the Rennlist link, I am running at 30psi front and 32psi rear hot --- and yes on Saturday I had to put 10psi back in to drive home. The set-up suggested runs at 5 psi more all around --- ??

I need a Pyrometer !

I just do the evenings at Donny for £125, its enough time to have a play for me, normally book a track days with Jonny.

I have a full Race pyro probe, it's the only way to see what's going on, but also keep it ok for road trips.

I'll mail you when I get the parts if you want to do Donny at the same time, ordered express UPS from the USA so should not take that long to arrive.

Toe is good to get heat in for sure on winter days, but I never do winter days :) so going zero front toe.

That's very kind of you -- yes I'd be interested in coming along and comparing notes.

Please let me know when you plan to be there ...

Chris

There are a lot of GT4s for sale at various dealers - PH alone has 25 (although one is listed as sold) - with prices ranging from £90k to £110k, so there's plenty of choice if you're willing to pay the price; although clearly not many people seem to be at the moment (tee-hee!).

I wonder how long the dealers will hang on for the best price before there's some movement downwards?

With the new registrations imminent, will we see even more cars entering the fray?

I'd also like to know how many of these cars were purchased by 918 owners.

Jeff
