Christmas cruise 30/12/08

Rob, sorry the year had to end on such a foul note for you. I just hope the averages even out in the future - by that reckoning you should be in for a long stint of trouble-free motoring.

Rob,

Sorry to hear of your woes, and that you could not join us.

Had we known that you were going to be stranded we cold have picked you up as we met only just down the road from where you were, and were even at Box Trees Roundabout gas station, just down the road from Solihull OPC too!!

Hope you get your car sorted soon, and that we can get some footage of you on the Targa Cam on the next run.

Cheers,

Nige.

I am working on the videos, but as I said earlier I think I now have a microphone fault which is why the audio is so bad.
This new video is a lot better - no nasty clicking noises. I think what you're left with is wind noise combined with an auto audio level control, which is then made worse by the compression that YouTube applies (unavoidable). Is the mic separate from the camera? If so, does it have a windshield?

Please can I request that if you are going to publish pictures of other people's car on public forums then you first edit them for removal of number plates?

I know this is a hastle, but this is the reason why 90% of the 2008 Swiss trip pictures were never published on the site. If you need help then I would be more than happy to do the editing for you.

Many thanks

Gary,

Agreed - Targa Cam it is then!! [:D]

Lets hope that I get the Mike fault sorted on it before the next outing.

I am going to post the external POV Videos from the Targa Cam next!!

Hope they come out OK!!

Nige.

Loved the footage but please be aware that the Police have been recently prosecuting people who put footage of them speeding on UK roads on YouTube. And they don't need to see your speedo for this...

I know this is down to personal preference, and if I were a celebrity my views might be different, but for my part I have no objection to my registration being shown, after all it's on show to the world whenever the car is out of the garage.

Trust me, generally the less info you put on the internet the safer you are. Things like real names and birth-dates are usually a BIG no-no. You watch any TV footage of famous people's cars and the numberplate will always be blurred out. There are lots of ways your numberplate can be used against you, cloning for one.

Alex,

Of course not a problem, but I don't think that I took any pictures of your car, so your reg was never published in any of my pictures on line.

Also as stated what is there to stop anyone cloning your car and reg for whatever purposes just by seeing the car.

Equally at any event like this there are many members of the public, such as at donnington services yesterday, that were also taking photos of all the cars lined up there, and we have absolutely no way of know what those people will be doing with the photos.

Having said all that I do appreciate everyone is entitled to their own opinions and rights.

Therefore is any one who attended the event yesterday, and who I have subsequently published photos on here and my webshots album, then do let me know and I will pull the photos, either permanently or edit the registrations off the photos where they are visible.

Sorry if I have caused problems for any one.

Nigel.

That might slightly be down to stalkers and security [;)] more than numberplate cloning etc..

I will not be ruled by either the nanny state nor criminals that try to ruin our lives, thus I have no issue with my plate shown.
As per the video, I don't really think that we were going silly on the roads yesterday...

Now if it had been today !! bit of a winterland experience [&:]

Thanks Nigel

Yes I know pretty much all information is accessible if you look hard enough, but you should always try to minimize how easy it is to get at that info. Putting such things on the internet makes it VERY easy for people to find what they are looking for.

New 911's aren't a common sight on the roads, and so cloning plates from one would be harder for a criminal that other types of cars. If I were the criminal then the first place I would look for a matching car would be a Porsche forum! As I say though, cloning is just one example exploitation.

Sorry all, I don't mean to take this thread off on a tangent and detract from what was a very enjoyable and well organized (as ever) day.

Yes, everyone was very sensible yesterday, lots of good driving (especially from those in non-997's).

I was just making a generic point about recording footage on public roads. VERY easy to slip over UK road speed limits in a 997 without you even realizing...

No paranoia here either .
Please feel free to publish photos of my cars anywhere appropriate and in full.

Commented elsewhere already but thanks again Gary for organizing this .

Lovely sound from the Targa, and we enjoyed following you most of the afternoon - though we had to wear dark glasses, of course [:D][:D] Hope your better half is recovered, she was putting a brave face on for our benefit.

Regards privacy and concern over registration numbers being visible in photos and/or videos, perhaps all such postings could be restricted to the Members Only area?

Chris, the events normally are to a degree.
However this was an open invite to all and you will see that quite a few joined us on the day, including some that are logged as non members, if we were to move this to the member only area then they would not be able to join in or see any of the images at all.

Its a shame that a great day was had but this thread end up like this [:(] it really doesn't inspire people including myself to be bothered to try and put events on.
Many photos were taken on the day and not just by people on this forum, whats to stop them posting them up elsewhere??
Where does this lead to if we are to attend any open day/non closed event? Poole for example?

Yes, you're right, Gary - it would immediately exclude them rather then encourage them to attend a club event - which would be opposite to what the club is all about. Not such a good idea, then!

Trying to plan a jaunt for the R10 area for later in the year at the moment. Have already picked some local roads, but heading towards Beford and the A6 today, I started to encounter speed cameras around every bend. Kind of puts you off a bit! Not that Porsche drivers would ever consider breaking the speed limit, of course...
