Novice Track Evening Brands is Back 20th May!

ORIGINAL: spook I'm booked in and will be travelling down from Buckingham area .Perhaps we could go together? What time do you plan to go?
Google Maps reckons about 1 1/2 hours, so allowing 2 hours, to get there for 16:15 I'd leave home at 14:15. We could meet up just North of Dunstable (pub car park next to a service station just before the cutting) and then go via the A5 to Markyate to join the M1 at J9.

Do well,I'll contact you again nearer the time.Looking forward to a few laps before a track day at Silverstone on 28 July! Presume you can give me a lift home if I end up in the gravel- or vice versa !!

I wasn't sure I'd be able to make this so haven't booked - is there an option to pay cash on the day if there's space left? Thanks, Gavin

Yes Gavin, Steve takes CASH! But better call him asap on numbers above, sure he will find you space ..... I might be driving in earlier sessions, if anyone wants the wrong lines!

ORIGINAL: nathan 1981 930 G50 Can we get there early and watch the day event?
YES good idea, public participation is free and you can access pits .... good to get there early and sample atmosphere and get the feel:rolleyes:

Thanks. I called the club office earlier - looks like I'll see you all there tomorrow [:D] If any Brands experts want to offer some tips or risk a lap or two with me let me know [:D]

Check for gravel too, Des...! I'm probably first home from this evening's excitement. Thanks to Des, Melv and all those at the club and at Brands who made this event possible. It bodes well that it was essentially a sell-out. Doesn't looks as though I'm cut out to be a racing driver, though. No matter how many laps I did - with an instructor - I just still couldn't brake and/or change gear in the right place. I wasn't paying any attention to what was behind and I've no idea what speed I was doing as I didn't look down once. But if anyone should ask "Brands Hatch", at least I can say "I was there".

My wife asked if it really was better than sex. What SHOULD I have said? We must do more of these.... (Written from the spare room) Jon

Yes slight detour at the end of my afternoon session ..... forgot no ABS!!![X(] Great to see so many members enjoying their first outing ... I am told the evening was FULL. Well done everyone who promised to take part .... how about: Novice +1 ? Any pictures anyone? Where was Rick when you needed him ..... Oh and great laps in the 911S SWB 2.0ltr ....

A big thanks to Des, but also to everyone for making this event possible! I had a great time and enjoyed being taken out by Melvin in his cup car. I hope we can get a Novice+1 event organised sometime in the future. Snetterton is a great track with lots of run off areas. A big apology to the person who was behind me, (grey boxster maybe?) as my mirror glass came unstuck probably thanks to those bumpy kerbs[:D]. From what I saw in my rear view mirror it looked as though the glass did hit the ground first and then break into tiny pieces [] At least it didn't happen on the road and hit a motor cyclist or worse. Des, I saw the black lines in my video. They look very long [:D] Vids to follow.

Excellent Picture Nathan FRONT COVER PORSCHE POST? Captures the true Spirit of Club and Members .......

I have just run through my stills from the event which, so far, I have whittled down to 150 but can loose a few more yet. I would anticipate there to be at least one good picture of everyone in the last two sessions. Regrettably I couldn't be in two places at once. I was hoping Rick Cannell would have been able to cover the stills side for us but he broke down on the way to the event. We all like pictures of our cars on tracks and us driving them while wearing helmets [8D]. The stills will go on the tail end of the DVD as a gallery and will also be included as jpg files which you can print off from a computer. The following cars are included at least once:- LF54BH* H839RJ* J596LM* P99DS* R1NM* LK05HK* G428TY* LVS6* CW54FU* H839RJ* L725UU* J596LM* M654LM* F135FO* C2XJ* FM03VF* M111DA* K849KH* F887MA* HPR100* GU52OS* X88BO* F135FO* GT02GA* 911R* I can only apologise if your car isn't listed above. We had several technical issues in the evening which I will touch on further. If anyone has any good pictures of those missing please put them on a a CD and send them to me via Club office to try to make those not included happy. Regrettably a severe battery fault on the main video camera curtailed much of the evenings track side shooting and the car camera ran out half way through the evening. On a plus side - we have more camera car footage of the first sessions (prior to the camera going down) so, if you paid attention during the briefing, you might be on that. It was surprising how may didn't because, if you had followed me as I suggested we would both have been going faster - it will hopefully make for an interesting DVD none the less. We managed to get a lot of camera car and track side footage during the day so this might well prove of interest how fast some of the cars were going. The DVD will be going on sale through Club Shop so keep an eye on Porsche Post for details. As soon as it is available I will also post on here to let you know. Putting all of the above aside - PROVIDING YOU ENJOYED YOURSELF and had no incidents, it makes no odds how fast or slow you were going. There were a lot of happy faces at the end and I do hope this won't be your last Club track day experience. Jon was right. On an evening like yesterday it is better......[;)]

Yes it was a great success for Club (financially) and Members .... there is a definate market here for Motorsport, I have already suggested a Novice + 1, to be included in a future Club Track Day sessions ....... if we can't capitalise on this then will be lost to other tarck day organisers, many have the flavour, and some great peddling! The evening 2 hour Novice session was FULL (35 cars) and had to be in three groups ... during the day open pit with only about 20 cars .... Glad you enjoyed it John, look forward to seeing the DVD.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that Des, it was damn hard work. To generate a respectable 30/45 minute DVD with only one day to film, one camera and one one bullet cam takes a lot of rushing about. I had intended to do some still shots during the day session but just didn't have time. It was only after the video cameras shut down that I grabbed the still camera to ensure there was something for the evening people to remember their time on track. I haven't seen the camera footage yet but I am confident those included in the stills won't be disapointed. One thing which came as a bit of a surprise was the level of sustained concentration necessary both during the day and in the evening to drive at track speeds, commentate where necessary ( I have added respect for Derek Bell with "In Car 956") and also consider what we were doing next, how and where. During the day the driving needed considerable focus and wasn't helped by the less accommodating characteristics of my 944 Turbo. In the evening while we weren't going as fast there was much more thought going into who was where and how we could film them but not cause unnecessary distraction or added pressure. Obviously safety is of the utmost importance so we couldn't always manipulate the shoot as we would have preferred. Similarly with only two sessions in the evening we couldn't really change the plans outlined in the briefing. It became apparent that the speed differential in the evening was such that it might have been better to have mounted the camera on the front of the car and follow rather than be followed but, having told people of our original plan I didn't want to change half way through. Similarly it could have been more intimidating for people to be chased rather than following. There were some high points undoubtably though. Having Mel bobbing around behind me was fun even though we had to behave when others were around. Dave (our camera man) was particularly excited about that footage so it might be a high point on the DVD as well. At the end of the day the most important thing is everyone enjoyed themselves and nobody was hurt. If we produce a respectable DVD as well that should be considered a bonus.

John I was actually referring to the Evening Novice Session and not the DVD production ...... but great that the Club has now adopted and embraced this much needed archive of Club events ..... well done.

That's a great idea Des, I'd be honoured if it was used. Can you send a link of this thread to the right people to see what they think? I have the original, higher resolution here and can email it to them if they think it may be suitable. Maybe we can get more people to come for a curry afterwards on the +1 I had a great time [8D]
