Had a good long chat with Parr Motorsport who are the official Porsche GB Race tuning people a while back.
They have some interesting products and although not factory supported as such, you would have thought they would be a safe a bet as anyone ?

Now there is a thought - run the x51 until the warranty runs out then upgrade to be definatley the naughty side of 400bhp and still have the normally aspirated sound track! Hmmm.......

I don't know all you boys with your X51 toys, have got me right jealous.
However although I can't run to X51 funds just yet am about to start on the path,
Stage 1, C2S is in Notts OPC for the PSE this thursday so for a while will have the ample S performance and £1395 gets me the X51 sound track - bargain I say.
.
.
.
Still jealous though !!!
Paul
ps still managed to fly the C2S flag when rapidly departing the ACE cafe at the Pistonheads Porsche gathering on the 10th March without putting it side ways like one of the 993 drivers (it did look cool though).
Stage 1 complete [] I think Notts OPC left some early RS engine in my tail pipes. What a grorious sound.
Stage 2 under discussion, David at Notts will work on a price for the full X51 however will be happy with the new sound track for a while.[]

Good man - lovely sound from the sports exhaust. Enjoy[]
x51 , come to the dark side, you know you want to......[]
A) Let me know wat you find out, especially what it does to warranty (this might be the controlling factoron what/when I look at things)
B) I have also been hovering around and thinking about reveo technick - normal claims are 10 -15% powerhike from their chips for about 1k, ie 38 -57 bhp - Any one been through the process with them on their 997C2s or X51 upgrade
Seems to me given the parts changed for the x51, the engine cshould be able to take a lot more without sending ye more thousands on more hardware upgrades
c) Anyone put their x51 on a rolling road? One of the engineeers at the OPC I bought mine from claimed that most saw the naughty side of 400bhp anyway the quote in the techncial bumph is "at least 381 bhp". I'd like to know whether there is any truth in this
D) Yves - some one had to make it 150

In order
A) In terms of the factory warranty, it would not cover a software related failure. How you could prove a failure ( or not as the case may be ) was directly as a result of the re-map I have no idea. Reputable tuners such as DMS, Revo, Parr etc would stand in place of the manufacturers warranty in this case.
B +C) I agree, this engine is basically very strong mechanically and in reality has been 'de-tuned' to account for poor fuel quality, poor maintenance regieme and lack of mechanical sympathy from some owners.
A reliable source informs me that he has seen over 415bhp on the dyno for a mapped X51 car which squares with your OPC Engineers advice !
D) Good Man, lets see if we can make it to 200 !

What's the old adage??? If it smells like bullshit, then it probably is bullshit"¦ or something like that. I seriously smell some in these comments. Don't get me wrong, I sincerely hope I'm wrong and Porsche do actually happily sell us cars which severely outperform what they specify; but as a realist I just don't see it.
415bhp is all Porsche can manage out of a GT derived dry sump 3.6 in the GT3 and GT3 RS. Both these engines have performance parts far superior to anything in the X51 package of a non race bred, non dry sump engine that is the standard Carrera block.
Also, isn't it part of the car building process at Porsche that if any engine is too weak, or too powerful, then they get replaced before the car leaves the factory and don't ship out.
Also in the Evo test I think it was, they dyno'd the test GT3 at 429 bhp, 15 more than Porsche reckoned ,so that would pretty much stack up with porsche also understating the figs published for the X51 pack to a similar level. Interestingly though even though the Evo car had 15 more bhp, they got slower time to 100 than porsche published anyway, so the bhp figure is pretty meaningless anyway in that context.
I dont believe Porsche replaces engines that are too powerful either, it was my understanding that only the ones that dont reach minimum power requirements are replaced, but then again I have heard so many differant stories about that side of it, it is difficult to know who to believe.
Like I said only one way to find out what youve got in your car & thats get it dyno'd....It would be very interesting if a lot of people got their cars done as that then would indicate a good yardstick for what power you could really expect from a particular model. Maybe the PCGB should arrange a dyno day somewhere!

I smell something else, the fragrant truth that Porsche have provided us with a solid platform to improve upon for those of us who dont buy the b.ll...t that it cant be done safely and reliably !

Not so, this engine is also strangled by the same compromises as the 'standard' engines albeit a little less so.
I suspect some of it is down to marketing and how much power in any particular model they want us to have at any one time.

Therefore, a Carrera S at 355bhp, should be between 355 and 366bhp, with an average of about 360bhp

The 997S is a superb car, but a few extra horses won't transform it into a different animal & you will soon get used to the marginal extra power & want more again!
If you have a 997S & hanker after more grunt go for a new flavour of Pork, the change in character, handling, power delivery, feel, sound & looks will stimulate you far more than a very few extra horses & you will get more back come re-sale.... I call that win win!!!

Sorry guys, can't really see the financial sense in investing £10k in the X-51 power kit for a 997S, when Porsche have the 997GT3 or the 996TT to choose from at a similar price point!

Grant,
All valid points but with one crucial and fatal flaw.
You cant have the multifunction steering wheel in the GT3.
Game over.

Also can't get the bose stereo which is significantly better than the sound package for long journeys
oh and I paid a lot les than £10k for the powerkit
oh and if your Walter Rhol its faster round the ring than the last generation 996 GT3 snd its comfortable over long distnaces to say nice roads in scotland or farnce/italy then its playtime. So not as quick as todays 997 GT3 but more usable
You pays your money...........................................................

Game started you mean.......
1/ you don't need a Bose stereo when the engine sounds as good as a 997GT3 at full bore.. AWESOME
2/ The steering wheel is an integral component of the beast, not a button-fest! You are bonding, breathing with, part of the machine your hands instinctively "feel" the road surface, yet the ride is comfortable! You are too busy enjoying the adrenalin fueled interaction to worry about the odd stray plastic button!
3/ So compared to X-51 the Gt3 is faster, holds its value better, is more involving, handles better, sounds better, is only slightly less comfortable & now comes with Nav, upgraded stereo, traction & even heated seats, the only downsides are a lack of rear seats & that low front splitter!
Of course if you aren't championing the X-51 upgrade over a 997GT3 at similar money, then the standard 997S is plenty good enough & saves a useful chunk of cash into the bargain! I'd be happy with either, but X-51 is neither fish nor fowl! Although I love those of you that have chosen it for your sheer decadence[]!

Much fear I sense in you, clouded your judgement has become......
No amount of race track hype can make up for the missing multifunction steering wheel !
