Turbo Engine Rebuild

Hmm...if paying someone to do the work it would be much more, at least double but perhaps closer to 3 times more.

Pete

Hi Pete

That total included a £4.4k bill to AMAC for engine works, parts and labour, and £1.5k to my mate for labour for engine removal and refitting as well as a load of other things. £1,850 to the paint shop and about £1,250 on various parts and sundries on top of that. I won a watch with AMAC and the painter and obviously my mate looked after me too!

But yes, I concur, it could have been way more expensive. A lot of good advice on this forum also kept the costs down.

Maybe that’s Darn Sarf prices but I paid less than £5.5k for engine out, machine work, full rebuild and back in by a garage.

Hi Stuart

Well all I can say is from my experience it costs a lot more, ok I fell on my feet with the recent respray costs, but the quote from the company who painted the car 20+years ago was over £10k which I take to be an average price for full respray today. In regards to the engine rebuild, on my engine most of the labour was done by myself with some support from my son, however the cost of parts and machining alone cost over £12k, hence my comment on the price given.

However, well done to you for the work done, the car looks great and I'm sure will run just as well as she looks.

Kind regards

Pete

Got these today off the same car I got the gearbox and heat shield from, £120. They are Spax RSX118 coilover kit , gas adjustable. They seem in good enough nick. Maybe be able to lift the rear a wee bit now and get the front up a bit to match.

Nice find :)

You will still need to either re-index the torsion bars though or remove them completely to use the coil overs.

Is that a butchered shift rod in the picture! :D

Yes I believe it is a butchered shift rod! Shan't be needing that!

So, my knowledge of this isn't great. These are described as "helper" springs that work with the torsion bar. With my car sitting lowered on the torsion bar just now (with no springs), I was thinking that simply installing these would lift the car a little bit, or I could play with the height adjustment to gain the desired effect? The helper springs would push up a little bit, taking a bit of the strain and not be as low? Or would that not work?

Hi Stuart

From what I have read the 944 should never have its torsion bar removed and replaced with coils. The advice is to keep the torsion bar and fit helper springs. Looks like you got some useful kit there.

Sorry I just assumed that you would still need to reindex the torsion bars to get it to the height you need, otherwise I could imagine you would be creating tension on the torsion bars in the opposite direction by fitting the coil overs in such a way to raise the height?

I have heard of people removing the torsion bars completely, but as you say these are designed to run with the torsion bars.

Probably worth looking to see if there is an instruction manual for the Spax coil overs.

Found this article about the KW coil overs - https://s3mag.com/kw-coilovers-porsche-944/

I fitted a new set of KW's to my turbo around 15 years and 20k miles ago. Lowest price I found then was £1125 if I remember correctly. I didn't need to re-index but my 18" wheels had filled the wheel arches by an inch. Considering I very rarely use the car on a wet road, I was surprised that both the front springs had rusted and snapped near the bottom recently. The stainless dampers looked as good as new though.

Thanks guys. I will not be removing the torsion bar. At the moment, the plan is to simply bolt on the coilovers, and see how it is sitting, and take it from there. My rough thoughts are that the helper springs and torsion bar will work together, and that I should be able to adjust the height up from where it is presently by putting some load on the springs and removing some load from the torsion bar, sort of best of both worlds, and height adjustable? Is this flawed?

So, having read that helpful article (cheers David!) it looks like with me already being re-indexed lower, I should be good to go and my thoughts seem to be backed up!

New (to me) AOR gearbox fitted today. Seem to have won a watch, looks to have been recently rebuilt and also came with a spanking new stainless short shift linkage kit on it. Didn't even change the oil as it looked brand new when we went to drain it. I'm back to the original cooler loop but this one is in good nick and has no leaks.

Quick test drive made me beam like a Cheshire cat, lovely smooth, short shifts, feels very purposeful. 1st into 2nd is perfect from cold, slides into reverse effortlessly, all good, as quiet as a 944 box can be I think.

My old, rebuilt in 2018, and fairly decent AOR is now on eBay for £795 including the external oil cooler set-up. £650 to anyone here or if you know of anybody looking for one. They get rarer by the day.............
