what did you do to your 944 today

I replaced the festoon bulbs in the interior lamps, for 4x4 board mounted LEDs. I also removed the whole lamps assembly and spent a couple of minutes cleaning each with a little Fairy liquid and a (new) Tesco Value tooth brush. Theyve come up looking like new, with clear plastic replacing the yellowy-brown patina. So: how do they look? Well - does anyone remeber that early episode of Only Fools and Horses, where Del sells ex-BR yellow paint to the owner of a Chinese takeaway? [:D]

ORIGINAL: andy watson Hi Edd, Nice pic, got any more to show us?

Thanks Andy, CS stickers were removed just before this track day, better without imo. Yes, def got the track day bug, Le Mans was a good track too, but not really a track day. Would like to do a couple more in UK and then Spa, you coming too?[;)] Edd

Well not Spa! But just got details of Silverstone track day taster so I am thinking about doing that to be honest though not sure which one to take, the 44 or M3. Was you nervous at all, I mean stuffing your pride and joy? That is what has always concerned me if it was a dedicated track car it wouldn't matter.

Many people have asked me that, to be honest it doesn't bother me, maybe it should as I would hate to see the car written or something, I think a lot depends on who you do track days with and whether you are insured, I was. My thinking is that if people are happy to do it in their £100,000 GT2's then why not a £4000 944? Besides I like to use these cars as nature intended. Ideal situation would be to have a dedicated track car, but I neither have the space or do enough track days to justify one. Edd

Edd, how tall are you and how much (approximately if you like [:D]) do you weigh? Ive been measuring the seat height of my Sparcos against the original seats and although I can get them quite a bit lower, I end up sitting lower in the original seats due to their squashing under my weight and Im not sure that I will have helmet space in this sunroof car! Simon

I still haven't got my car back but I think the main problem is that bucket seats get fitted in a much more upright position. I will get you some info eventually even if you have a track car, it still isnt something you want to crash as it still costs to fix it. I dont bother with insurance for track days. it's only really a total loss where the insurance works, and mine is worth more in bits anyway. I did have an incident a few years back in my turbo - approx 1k of bodywork (porsche approved repairer) I didn't bother claiming as the excess was £500, and the loss of no claims would have cost me more. The good thing is that if something breaks, I don't need the 944 for work the next day. you also get to a position where you need to compromise a daily driver to make it a better track car.

I'm 5'9" and about 75kg, so not particularly tall or large, Southbound told me getting bucket seats low in these cars is difficult as the side mounts are too tall, especially with a rail, thats why they designed their own custom fit. On my seat there really is no space under the seat, maybe 5-10mm at the lowest point. My seats are in the middle position so end up slightly reclined which for me works better than the straight forward position that southbound fitted them. Edd

Insurance was free with PCGB track days do no extra cost and therefore worth it. I agree no one wants to lose any car, especially a track car thats probably had some good money invested in it. The 944 makes such a good track car it seems rude not to, I did toy with removing rear seats, etc, but I think the car is much better untouched on the inside (beyond perhaps good bucket seats) if used as a DD, and thats how I intend to keep it. Let me know when you are doing Silverstone as I may come with you...

My son drove mine (sideways) round a field at the inlaws, was going in a Metro but it conked out so the only option was my 944 Cab, it got muddy but he loved it, I loved it and the car even seemed to be having fun, just gave it some TLC. Sixteen year old driving his first porsche, priceless !

I was down in Birmingham on Thursday so popped into the Porsche shop and got a eurocup filter. Before:

Allegedly paid for by buying stuff from OPCs and then selling it to mug punters for twice the price... Pork Chop, that is.

I fitted a second LED bulb, this time into the courtesy lamp in the boot. The inside of my car now looks like a scene from Close Encounters whenever you open the door.

Had a super drive from my girlfriends place in London up to Hedingham Castle for Classics at the Castle. Car's a bit noisy at the moment as the exhaust is on it's way out. My shop reckoned it could wait until my MOT later this month - but they're a racing shop so a bit of noise isn't usually viewed as a problem. They said that a month ago. At this point when I say a bit noisy - it's ear splitting loud now. But heading out towards the M11 i've got to say it does sound good in a tunnel:) On the way back I had my first experience with the fuel light. I had no idea how long I'd got to go as it came on as we deafened everyone on the M4. So we slowed way down and fortunately did make it to back to Reading and a very welcome BP station. Classics at the Castle was really fun. 40 anniversary of the Carrera 2.7RS. I've never seen so many of them before. Wonderful. Seeing some of the racers on the "parade" up the driveway was great fun. Some of the cars were being driven a bit more enthustically than others - particularly the racers. all in all a very excellent weekend.

Had the car MOTed and serviced at Promax. Only advisory - exhaust is a bit loud [8D] Bigs girls blouse if you ask me. Also acquired a LR super 61 turbo - I'm determined to blow the engine up! 244K on the clock.
