what did you do to your 944 today

Thanks for the pic Grant, very helpful although the link no longer works. Indeed there are loads to choose from but that type look the best. I went for these.......

LED's seem to have improved massively recently and give a wider spread and are much brighter. I guess these won't be dimmable?....... I know most LED's aren't.

Corrected 2 tooth out balance belt. Not happy with indy.

Fitted new J-Boot. Car quicker. Old one perished where the metal tube goes in. AFR's stable again.

Fixed slow puncture. Seems I've had a Philips screw as a stowaway for the last 6 months. Been pumping up tyre every 3rd day. Ought to have dealt with that sooner!

Going to fit new alternator belt tomorrow to try and alleviate start up squeak. Installed re-con alternator but squeak still present. Try new belt before launching re-con alternator back to spark!

2 teeth out? That's not clever. I would have thought that you would have done the belts yourself.

Yeah Col I should have. Just didn't fancy doing it outside in this weather and it was convenient just to get them done when the cam tower was off. I will never use an indy again as I am totally disgusted with the whole saga. I need to phone him tomorrow to see how he wishes to settle this. I shall be asking for all the labour to be refunded. Don't mind paying for the parts. I'm disgusted that I took the car back twice to say something wasn't right and both times I was "assured" belts had been rechecked and we're fine. This is clearly a lie. Also ended up paying for new engine mounts I didn't need as he convinced me that was the problem. Seething doesn't begin to sum it up.

Fired on my new alternator belt today. All seems quiet now although won't be happy till I hear it quiet from stone cold in the morning.

interesting event today.

After driving 30+ miles without incident I connected up my 944S2 battery to my campervan with some jump leads .

I started up the Porsche and propped the throttle at 2000rpm .

The moment I tried to start the campervan (2.5L ) the Porsche alternator started to squeal like a stuck pig !

I removed the leads and revved the porsche and the squeal went away.

Every time I tried to jump start the van the same thing happened and I had to rev the Porsche for a minute or two to stop it squealing.

Do these alternators have an integral clutch ?

Well my squeak is away. Maybe I didn't need a new alternator after all!! So I now have a spare one that may well be fine but I know I have one in the car with new bearings, brushes and slip rings! So not all bad.

No squeaks and no vibrations. You've no idea how happy that has made me!

Called Indy today. Left message. He never called back. Twice in 2 days now.

Tried greasing my rear screen wiper mechanism to stop it sounding like rusty meccano.

That didn't work so any good tips would be appreciated [&:]

I might have a motor.

Mine was seized solid. I dismantled it and lubed it up, it worked but made a hell of a din. I got a used replacement on Ebay for 20 quid.

Today I had a bit of good fortune on the 944, just for a change. I decided to find out why the auxiliary lights in the bumper didn't work, either for flashing or for extra main beams. Having convinced myself that it would be a poor earth (at best) or bodged wiring (most likely, from experience), I thought I might as well swap over the horn and aux light relays just to check the latter worked properly. Lo and behold it didn't ! And the bonus is that it is a simple everyday relay, unlike most of the others on the car, and could therefore be replaced from stock. Easily sorted, now all I need do to those aux lights is to work out how to fix them firmly when both they and the bumper are lacking the original lugs - ducktape temporarily to the rescue !

Received a package from Germany containing some D9 fibreglass bonnet vents (not bought from D9 though) and am picking up a spare bonnet at the weekend to fit them too. Should help dissipate some heat on track Days!

Also got a spare dash today and stripped the vinyl off it, it needs a couple of small repairs to the foam and then it's having a Black leather with red stitching eBay skin applied to it to match in with the rest of the interior. This way the dash swap is more straightforward and the original dash can be stored.

I still don't have the car back yet as it's been in the garage having a service, new oil lines fitted to the twin oil coolers and the power steering pump replaced.

Hoovered the new project, (S2) then started to remove the masking tape that has been stuck to it for 6 months, fired her up probably first time in 6 months started on the button with a bit of cam follower rattle for 5 minutes which then cleared when nice and warm, clattered some cavity wax into the sills and various other areas.

Started the turbo and got it up to temp and moved it out of the garage, as it's not kept here at home I I only see it once a week on average I forget how stunning it looks [:D]

Tried to get to the bottom of why my boot was leaking (again!) Discovered that the right hand catch was loose, and I suspect that water was trickling out of it. So I took it out, dismantled it, cleaned and re-greased and re-assembled it and put it back in with some LSX gel on top of it to seal it to the bodywork. Hopefully that will stop the leak.

Discovered that the leak had also reached the bottom of the spare wheel well, as had a quantity of rice whose bag split on the way home from the supermarket a few months ago. I guess that the consequential handfuls of mouldy rice was to be expected but it was unpleasant to say the least! Once everything had come out, been cleaned and allowed to dry and put back in I was a little happier.

Also mounted my home-made bluetooth receiver in the dashboard. I'm quite pleased with it as a very discreet retro-fit thingummy - maybe photos to follow.

Oli.

Took the dash out, stripped the paint from the prisms using nail polish remover, foiled them up and fitted the LEDs. What a transformation and they dim down. 40 minutes all in!
