what did you do to your 944 today

I always give the same advice, as people always regret selling, but I don't think that I have ever meant it as much as I did with this.

Spent many a happy hour trying to get this lump out, one bolt took two hours to shift half a flat at a time using two modified spanners [:(]

Back from the coast and nearly two weeks outside of the garage and with lots of thunderstorms,,hailstones and very heavy rain,,

she was totally bone dry[:)],,no tiny leaks or slightly damp carpet,,,

happy days and drove so well with her new alternator and fanbelts not forgetting puncture fix,,

High numbers for a few miles and rock solid,,felt like she was cruising with lots left on the right foot,,,,,jasonp

Didn't get much done today. Applied a second coat of paint along the channel on the underside to the sill and sanded down the wheel nuts a gave them a fresh coat of paint. I hope the weather is good for the weekend, I really need to get the stone chip applied to the sill.

Not today but over the last few weeks I've fully refurbished the rear brakes with new Pagid discs & pads plus rebuilt both cylinders using Porsche rebuild kits as the offside rear was locking on & eventually wore out the pad.Mainly caused by a split piston dust seal letting the outer end of the piston /bore corrode enough to sieze.

Then driving up the drive to Orsmkirk Golf & Country Club at the start of Porkers in The Trough 8,the rubber suspension bobbins holding up the petrol pump failed letting the feed hose from the tank drag on the ground & wear through until the pipe was spewing petrol out.

Fortunately I was alerted to the problem fairly quickly before any sparks could send me up in flames-a good friend & fellow R18 member,Rod Staples ran to get some Visegrips from the Golf Course maintenance building whilst I did my little Dutchboy impression stemming the leak.Got trailered home at the end of the day ,ordered a new pipe, tank filter but had the bobbins ,jubilee clips in my stock.

Main problem was that the tank was nearly full but had 2 x 20 litre empty plastic oil containers & used one of those plastic squeeze handpumps to drain enough util it was reasonably safe to cut right through the pipe & drain the rest using my visegrips as a "tap"-jacked up at 1 side meant that a lot of petrol drained to the side of the tank away from the outlet.

All back together-filled back with half the fuel -no leaks -started 1st time & sounded a lot sweeter /quieter at the pump.

So took for MOT (now overdue 2 weeks because of the fuel pipe) & passed but owner of the garage I always use let me get away with a slight wear on offside front balljoint plus the evergreen steering shaft slight wear & nearside handbrake efficiency a bit low.All necessary parts obtained this week at ECP including Lemforder ball joint £14.88,OE steering shaft £95.29 so just got to find the time to do the work-oh the joy of running a 30 yr old car!

Incidentally, the intank filter I removed was in very good unblocked condition & didn't really need replacing, but you don't get to know that until you remove it

Took mine for a service, MOT and a petrol smell investigation.

Suspect I may put it up for sale when returned as, for the second year running I've had less than 500 miles running due to other time pressures. It's a shame to see it sitting in the garage doing nothing...

Vitesse - aha, I thought it was you at Porkers but didn't come over as you seemed to have enough people fussing around to move the car.

I was in the wife's Boxster as my car was turboless at that point.

Glad you got it sorted with minimal financial pain.

Dropped mine off at EMC in Birmingham for the engine rebuild, should be back by the end of September [:D]

Saw Mark K's old blue Turbo race car as well as Callum Lockies track 968 and a myriad of other 944/968 road and race cars.

Dave

What a pity you didn't-it would have been good to put a name to a poster!-I now know Greg quite well.

We are up at Whalton at our Daughters again this weekend but not in a Porsche-our visits to lovely Northumberland never seem to fit with any R3 event ,sadly.

Can't also understand why I put "Ormskirk " instead of "Garstang " in that post?.

Yes ,just the hose from OPC -£14.85 inc VAT & discount if I remember but the intank filter was £40 or so(& not necessary really) plus some lost petrol & damaged pride ,never mind not driving the day although good friend Rob Kellock took me round in his 911 GTS-including some illegal speeds up the M55(probably helps if you are a Solicitor specialising in defending speeding motorists)

Checked the belts today in readiness for a couple of weeks away. Decided to change the balance belt as it wasn't tensioned well and a few teeth looked worn. Will do a full belt service once we get back...

My S2 failed it's MOT on both sills.

Good news was no advisories and nothing else wrong with it!

I had the sills repaired and the car passed its MOT yesterday, very pleased, it's been missed!

Not today but at the weekend I took my youngest(2 year old) for her first 944 trip, she liked it and asked me to go "fast fast",i of course was mature and did not oblige..

Finished changing the engine mounts. What an absolute b***** of a job!! Apparently on a Turbo it's worse, which I can scarcely imagine. I had a mid rise lift and removed the entire crossmember, supporting the engine from below (Alastair's method in the FAQ). I wouldn't contemplate doing it on axle stands or without removing the crossmember. Getting the four bolts between the mounts and the engine was a nightmare. Putting them back in was almost as bad because the holes didn't line up without levering heavy things around. I am sore and covered in cuts and bruises. But the car drives beautifully, lots of harshness and noise has just disappeared. One of the mounts was original and they were both significantly compressed vs the new mounts.

Not today but yesterday and confirmed today after some hesitation from the supplier of my choice.....yesterday I ordered new tyres.....:) Hope to get them fitted end of next week or soon after depending on how busy my son is. I've not had the car on the ramp yet to sort out what the problem has been, in the meantime I have kept the car off the road. I'll update my thread on the subject once the tyres are fitted....

Cheers

Pete

Alas, these things do seem to take time Dan, I originally thought that mine would take some months, iirc it took nearly 5 years? to be fair a big chunk of this was because of my other main hobby in building live steam locomotives, that I had been neglecting due to the car. The other big factor was the hidden costs, Porsche parts aren't cheap, nor were the mods that I had decided on. I still have jobs to do, the car could do with new brakes all round, rear bushes as these are still original, as is the torque tube and it's bearings..lot's of money involved in these things and as mentioned my other hobby which sucks in just as much money as the car, probably more. I think that I may need to come out of retirement and get a job?....:)

Pete

Yes ditto mate, it's cost me a bomb so far and as you say lots and lots of hidden bits and pieces still to purchase as and when I begin to start the build 🙄

Its funny as before the engine was damaged I had plans on changing all my bushes as there also still original , rebuilding my calipers and wanted to get the car resprayed, but hey this is how life goes.

i also have also got a million and one things on the go. I use to do allot of competition shooting and gunsmithin but that's all stopped since the turbo s engine cracked, then new house and new baby.

Lifes good though , I'll get there 😉
