what did you do to your 944 today

Sometimes I hate my car!

All set for the MoT today after loads of TLC on the suspension and gearbox cooler plus a full belts service. Was running fine 2 weeks ago last time I started it up after the service and gearbox work. Went to take it to the MoT station, would it start? Would be buggery!

Got the jumpers on it thinking battery a bit weak, no luck, checked fuel pressure, swapped out DME for spare anyway just in case, no luck. This eve checked for spark, yep it's there, still won't start.....ARHGGGG!

Ordered a new coil and ANOTHER spare DME Just In Frickin Case!!!!!!

Check the crank sensor plug leads behind the head and rotor arm attachment Phil....in all my near 20 years with my car I can only recall these and the DME ever being at fault for a 'non starter'.....I carry a small LED on a lead to check if the injectors are getting their driver feed correctly, something worth having if highly modified and you want to rule out fried drivers.

Pete

Cheers Pete,

I got an injector light to chech that I have a pulse. all seems good. Can't sus it out...Can't imagine crank sensors are gone on the basis I have cranking speed reading, injectors pulsing and spark working...fuel pump is also running...I even checked for a slipped timing belt!

hmm.ok did you check for corrosion in the sensor multiplugs? check TPS while at it and earth leads too.....take the dizzie cap off and check that the rotor arm hasn't come loose.. IIRC my car has only refused to fire up once...that was the rotor arm loose...it's confusing when that happens as you have both spark and fuel...I actually had my car flat loaded home only to find the problem the next morning...in my defence, I had no tools on me at the time... I now always carry a full toolkit...:)

Pete

Just checked the dizzy cap, nothing loose there. The only thing left is to wait for the new coil to arrive and see if it's a weak spark problem. Can't think why... I've got spark when I removed a plug... Sensor wires are okay, have to admit to not liking tinkering around them as I'm always paranoid about the 33yr old wiring! However, I even checked continuity between the ecu and the sensor plug...Sensors were replaced some 11 years/ 10k miles ago when I re-built the engine...

well it could be bad wires...when I replaced mine some years ago, I was surprised at just how brittle they were...none were giving the correct reading...it's a very hostile environment under the inlet manifold that's for sure. Do you have a compressor...pehaps blow out the multiplugs in case they have trapped water in them?

Water....in this weather Pete! Now you're clutching at straws [;)] Dry as a bone in there save for a little contact grease. I'll pick up a coil tomorrow and give that a go. Thing is, even if it were bad wires (and continuity would suggest not), with spark, fuel and compression it should at least make a go at starting even if it ran like a pig...which is why I'm suspecting/hoping it's a bad coil.....

well, I was thinking you may have given the car a good wash before MOT...this can lead to water in the plugs.....hope you fix it soon...I bet it's something simple rather than coil....good luck..

Giving it a wash was my plan when I went to start it on the day of the MoT, never even got that far unfortunately. It must be something simple. Only wish I knew! Cheers for the advise though Pete, always good to talk things through with someone!

Check your spark, you want a white / blue spark and not a weak yellow / orange spark, the latter would indicate a fault in the HT system.

I'm still thinking wiring......perhaps the new coil was enough to overcome any resistance in said wiring but not enough to keep the car running?...

Agree with you Pete. It started on the button with the new coil, then died 30seconds later and has been a pig to re-start. I'm going to check earths again tomorrow and the wiring from the ECU-LT coil side. I think that's my problem now (at leaset I hpe that's it).

PS. As it happens you were right about moisture, but not on the sensor plugs. The old coil had corrosion on the HT plug as if moisture had got inside. Not pretty, but with such a tight fit, don't know how it got moisture in there...

Yesterday, after 5 years of ownership I finally got round to replacing the speakers in the doors of my 944 turbo, I think the pictures explain the poor sound quality [:D]

[attachment=Speakers 2.jpg]

And as a bonus the annoying rattle from the passenger door has now disappeared as well !

MOT pass yesterday. Always nice. Need to get my wastegate off next and fix or swap it then after that it will be fingers crossed for my gearbox rebuild .

Two new sills fitted, rear quarter sections repaired with fresh metal and a new MOT with no advisories.

Now all I need to do is get my nice new grey sills painted black to match the rest of the car!

Took the S2 over on a day trip to Liverpool for an MOT. First one in 6 years (we don't have them in the Isle of Man) and passed with flying colours. Afterwards the guy asked me if I spent a lot on maintenance. Other than 1k in the last month to get it in tip top shape for a poss sale (hence the MOT), not hugely no. "Oh right" he says. "I was expecting it to be a bit of a rustbucket but it's really tidy".

His words, not mine [:D]

Had the RAC out to look at my non-start issue.

Really nice and helpful guy.

He reckoned the reference sensor was to blame. 2000ohmns.

Where is best place, best priced, to get a quality part?

Thanks.

Secondhand from the usual breakers or Main Dealer or try eurocarparts, sometimes surprising what they stock usually OEM.

Well I guess I’ve not been writing on this thread becuase I’d be writing something on here nearly every day lately ,so I’ll say what I’ve done i n the last month or so.....

i rebuilt my entire engine from scratch exactly the same as pete did, bar a few different parts such as bespoke made lightweight rods and steam vent kit in head , custom made and fittted racing steel look linners where old AlLusil ones were bored off for New thicker ones fitted and did my own port and polishing and honing of my manifold ( major major labour of love there!)

fitted thr engine with car on ramps in my garden, wwhich is where it still is as I’m undergoing surgery at the moment going through it all before the mot as it’s not lived for 3 years as the engine has been in tiny pieces for that long since a company split my cylinder through , through way too much boost.

up and runnung on the button after oul preasure reached so was and still am well chuffed. All exhaust system on. New rear fuel lines to fuel filter fitted, drained old fuel out of fuel level sender, all disks and pads removed and de rusted surface rust & ReFitted.

All calipers have today been cleaned sanded and 12 coats of red painted by hand as I did them live on the brake line ( another major major labour of love 25hours worth ) but worth it as I hated them black. Changed all the exhaust system nuts and bolts for copper nuts and new bolts . Rebuilt the turbo charger mines a k26. Fitted 70% new water hoses, loads of other stuff but that’s what I’ve been up to.

jolbs next are renew the handbrake shoes which will be tommorow then check over for any leaks again as I had a small one on a flange hose from the head which I’ve now replaced but not run up. And maybe a touch of bodywork on my seals whilst I’m eager 😊
