Young man's first Porsche aka project 951

Made some glassfibre stuff. Here's a left side Strosek style skirt mold ready, right side mold will be fabricate tomorrow. Will fabricate a pair of side skirts for son's 951. Mold turned out fine [:)]

Washed my Beemer project car. Bought it three years ago for 100€. Car has sat about a year. Just turned the key and it started right away.

Then we had a party at local hotel. View from our room's balcony. That building with round part was made for 1940's Olympics. the plan was to have opening/ending gala dinners at there. Because the WW II Olympics were postponed and Helsinki arranged them in 1952.

Last weekend we had PCF track day event. For some reason most of my pictures are 944/968 releated, even though looked like GT3 was the most common Porsche. The Finnish "ring" Avenisto; where this event was held as usual

Changed belts to a 968. 14th belt change during this year :) Was real easy with this hi tech tool i made..

Some changes to brake system. Son's project 951 didn't have ABS from the start. Now we have an opportunity to get the whole ABS package from a 1989 S2 which will put into parts. Help a friend sell parts from this car and he will give us this ABS system. Son's project car is a 1987 and ABS comes from a 1989 S2. According to WSM some changes were made in 1988. Wonder if this newer system is a direct bolt on to older body. Need advice what parts we need to pick up from this parts car.

Hi there, follow the rebuild with great interest. Slightly confused as to why you would want to go to the trouble of retro fitting ABS in the couple of S2 i have driven the ABS is not great. Its extra weight to carry and the sensors will at some time fail and cost to replace. In my and it is my opinion the effort involved is too great for the end product. Interested to hear your thoughts? regards
 
Steve, I agree your comments, and find myself questioning why add abs. Then I read your Volvo comments and smile to myself Then I see the Stratos reference, and I understand......not really an abs type client :) like myself George 944t
 
Hi George LOL I do know another Stratos replica owner who has tried to fit ABS from an Alfa 164 to his Strat. And I never could get him to tell me why!

It's mainly a safety issue. Owner of this 951 is my 23 year old son, who have almost none experience of driving a rear wheel drive cars. 951 will have over 300 hp and i am a little bit concerned how my son can handle it. When 951 ABS system is in good condition, it works just great. We have had all kind of brake caliper conversions with it (in some other 951's), like GT2 calipers, and even with those ABS works great. What comes to labor, well , i suppose we have done already quite a lot, so adding ABS, is not a big deal. What comes to weight, you can turn more boost [:)] How about adding Air Bag system to it, we have all necessary 968 parts available..[;)]
 
And I thought all scandinavians were born with the ability to drive anything quickly and safely! Perhaps a high speed driving course for his birthday? Intersting what you say about it working well when in good condition, other ensuring the sensors all work and the calipers, pads and discs are ok what else can you maintain? Have driven 2 S2 over a good milage and both felt similar in brake department and I found the ABS rather slow in comparrison to modern vehicles, so much so that I think I can brake better without the ABS. Anyone else care to comment?

Son beats me every time when we race with kartings, so he is not totally handless [:)] I suppose it's mainly because he weights a lot less than me... I have driven several 951's & S2's with ABS and all of these cars performed just fine what comes to ABS system. I have studied possibility to use newer ABS system. Early Boxster & 996 system is more or less standalone system like 944 ABS is. These are a bit faster than old 944 systems. My friend said he can easilly CNC mill sensor rings which can be fitted to 951 hubs (Boxster have different amount of teeth on ring). Might be possible we go to this newer system, have already Boxster ABS computer & pump available. Here's 951/S2 hubs my friend fabricates with sensor ring

Olli are you sure the number of teeth actually matters? The ABS is looking for a discrepancy in wheel speed, not absolute speed, so it's possible it won't mind that there are a different number of teeth.
 
I think the greater number of teeth will improve the resolution, - if the processor can handle the inputs at high speed. All my 944t's ABS motion, have been really pre-historic in winter on snow at slow speed. The Finn's are good on snow, Ari Vatanen for example could not drive an Escort straight! I think his mother did Scandinavian flicks with his pram, Brilliant. [;)] I have to say, ABS is a life saver - old or new systems. I once saw a certain accident avoided by a 1986 Granada with the brake lights on, weight transfer fully forward and half a turn of lock on, it steered around the accident. Years later I was forced to do the same in an A4 1.8T Quattro, I steered so violently left at 50mph that the guy in the passenger seat came over where I was and my shoulder was against the door glass. (RHDrive car). I felt a blip from the middle pedal during this but was able to steer as the wheels did not lock, (and the four cylinder engined A4 was a great driving car - light front). No question I would have T-Boned a spinning-top Mazda at huge closing speed, in the dark, without ABS. On a circuit, ABS may not be essential, but in a random 500 thousand miles of driving, there may be a 2 second interval where it is essential. I remember the M25 around London in the mid 80's when many cars had no ABS, there were 100 metre plus pairs of black lines everywhere. Some spiral shaped, some straight, some crossing over each other, some stopping suddenly[:(]. Not nice. I guess you have a point Oli, I have 2 boys age 14 & 15 years and I would share your concern with a 944T in the wet. Now you can tell me what Traction Control System you have planned - probably 997 PDK Launch on a 944T?[8|] George 944T
