Young man's first Porsche aka project 951

Just got the new TT bearings. Now it's time to restore it.

We started to restore TT today. Did some minor fuel tank heat shield overhaul as well. TT were cleaned properly, so it is rust free now. We wanted a bit better surface, so we put on some plastic filler

Olli, do the Public Authorities responsible for the Roads in Finland use Salt to prevent Ice, as per UK? your sons car parts are looking good, however the salt on our roads would soon change that keep up the interesting info George 944t
 
George, yes, unfortunately salt is still used. Fortunately they have reduced a lot use of it. In the northern part of the country is almost salt free. Here in the southern part it is still used, mainly because most of the cars are here, so much more traffic. Luckily son's car is a summer car, so it won't see salt any longer.
 
Can I ask Ollie why are you putting the ABS pump there rather than on the inner wing as per factory.
 
Because project car was originally a non ABS car. So, there is not any readily available attachment points for the pump. Also a stressing made for pump is missing. We don't want to remove right fender to be able to make these modifications. Pump is also more serviceable place when it is located to ex-battery box.Placement of the original place was quite odd for the factory. I suppose the main reason why they didi it was a space requirement. Original pump is much bigger than Bosch 5.3 unit. Most likely there was not enough space for pump with S2 & 951 models. If you look time period cars, like E30 bodied BMW, pump is located in the engine room.
 
Hmmmmmmm so do you plan to use a more up to date ABS control unit Olli, and does this mean the ABS operation will be "higher resolution" than the original 951 ABS operation. I am often amused at my ABS in the snow, a driver with a wooden leg could modulate the brakes more accurately George 944t
 
That makes sense. I had to buy a new pump and also remove what was left of the old mount and make a new mount for it.The problem with putting it in the inner wing is that it sits in a crap trap.The pump that was on mine looked ok until I removed it and discovered that it was made out of what looked like ash i.e. nothing but corrosion.
 
Yes we will go for a new generation system because original system is far too slow. It is just a design which was in prototype stage under 944's back in 1984 & 85. Bosch version 5.3 was still in use back in 2006, so this will be a big improvement over original. Luckily 99% of original ABS systems parts will work with newer pump & brain, which are integrated together. We will save quite a lot body modifications since we are going to install ABS pump to where battery used to be. Actually Bosch 5.3 version pump is so small, that you can install it with small battery to the same place.
 
Some minor progress, too many side projects which are slowing down son's project. Torque Tube got some rust preventive paint on it. Next step is to have black 2K epoxy on it

We started to restore the fuel lines. Some surface rust on them. I removed the old green coating and found out that steel line under coating was in very good condition. Now we are going to paint cleaned lines with 2K matt dark green paint. After that clear heat shrinkable tube "coat" will be put on it. Cleaned fuel return line on left & un-cleaned main line on right

I still can't belive how luck you are as regards rusty parts.In the uk a fuel line off of a car of that age would be totaly rotten,I regularly see 5 yr old cars with rotten brake and fuel lines.Hence the poularity of copper and plastic over here.
 
Two side projects finished. Changed right balance saft carrier to friends 968. Power steering pump bracket was broken

I thought these tie wraps were NLA. A friend of mine needed few for his S2 and gave me a correct part number.

Since it has a VW based part number, i asked from local VW if i can buy that as a VW part. Very helpful parts salesman looked from VW Etka and found out that part to be a "Porsche specific" and not available through VW in Europe. Only VW which still use it is a Brasilian made VW Saveiro pick up..... So in Brasil, you can buy 944 Tie Wraps directly from VW [;)]

Oli Sometimes I think you are reading my mind.I have just spent an hour looking in pet for these tie wraps.I need a few when I am refitting my engine.I ordered them from porsche and they cost 38p . A bit expensive for a tie wrap but hey ho what can you do?
 
ORIGINAL: os951 Thomas, i don't know. I just have an illegal old VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat Etka.....
It would have been great to be able to compare prices for part numbers sold by both brands. The price I see in my version of ETKA do not correspond to reality.
 
Just got a new exhaust system from a friend of mine. He fabricated it from 3" SS. Now we are waiting for a new crossover and down pipes he promiesd to fabricate for us [:)]
