Young man's first Porsche aka project 951

Wife wanted to do some gardening and two youngest sons wanted to play with their friends, so me and my eldest son got a free afternoon after we fixed my mom's Sauna's electric heater. Went with my eldest son to the track see some action. A friend of mine rented this track for a day and invited some friends to have some fun [;)] There where cars from Finland & Sweden + one Norweigan, but Paul lives in Finland

Started also work with my Bimmer project. Car is currently at our summer cottage, so it is more or less a weekend project during this summer. Looks quite OK after wash.

Son finished torque tube's surface. Lots of sanding after some bondo. It's finally painted with black 2K epoxy. Turned out nicely. Tube should look nice against freshly painted "Diamant Blau" bottom with some newly yellow passived parts, like heat shields etc [;)] We are going to install new bearings tomorrow.

Tube bearing installation was postponed to Monday. Instead of it we prepared some smaller items like front spindles which were glass blasted, and painted with 2K Epoxy paint (4-layers) After some grey anti-rust paint

We wanted to have a factory style dark green brake & fuel lines. We couldn't find locally suitable pipe and also factory offers new lines with other coatings, which is most likely cunifer pipe. We choose good old fashioned copper pipe. We prepared the surface and shaped them to the correct form. After that some 1K primer and 2K dark green epoxy paint was applied. We are going to add some clear heat shrinkable pvc on that, so pipes will not get any rust on them. I suppose pvc won't be needed since this 951 will be purely summer use only. Some yellowish 1K primer

And dark green 2K Epoxy

We drove to our friend Harri's place. He helped us to press in some bearings even tough he was just installing a new radiator into his 951

I'm impressed by the love for 944s Finland seems to have. (Though it may just be your friends Olli, rather than all of Finland!) And also, how much kit you all have for working on your cars yourselves! Good work.

Well, it's only "hardcore" 944 friends, who keep on working with 944 models. Most of the youngsters are already lost to Boxster or 996 scene. My son has been with 944's since he was 9, so this model is in his blood. We are sure 951 value will be risen in the future.

ORIGINAL: os951 Well, it's only "hardcore" 944 friends, who keep on working with 944 models. Most of the youngsters are already lost to Boxster or 996 scene. My son has been with 944's since he was 9, so this model is in his blood. We are sure 951 value will be risen in the future.
I agree with this Olli, the 951 already demands more money than many other Porsche models. I just checked Autotrader on-line, as of today you can buy the following models cheaper than a 951. Boxster,Cayman,Cayenne, 911 3.2, 964,996 928,968 and I gave up at page 60, doing a further check purely on 944's I could have gone another 20 pages or so before reaching the highest priced 951. These cars will only demand more money as their numbers dwindle, there are plenty of the other Porsche models around to choose from, not so many 951's. If any one is considering a 951, get it soon, if you own one, hold on to it at all costs, it will be a much sort after car in the future, far more so than it already is today...:) Pete

I totally agree with you Pete. At least here in Finland people have not yet seen the light. 951 can be bought quite cheap. Most of them are in quite bad shape tough. I followed quite closely German 951 market and found out 951 prices were at bottom around 2004/2005. Since then the price of the good ones has been rising steadily. After all, only about 27000 951's were produced. How about Boxsters ? Only here in Finland Valmet made over 240000 units. 996 production figures were about the same. Basic Boxster & 996 models won't be any collector items

Thanks Tom. We are at the moment in quite good phase, because finally it is a time to bolt on parts together again

Hehe, yeah that is definately one of the good bits. And you have got by the looks of things lots of good bits to bolt on! I am just waiting for my intake setup to arrive before I bolt the manifold and fuel system onto mine and go for first startup! Pretty excited now but also apprehensive to see if I did a good job of: A) Rebuilding the engine B) Rebuilding the torque tube C) Selecting a good second hand LSD gearbox Fingers crossed eh :D

Sounds good Tom. Some progress today; installed more bushings. This time solid billet aluminium ones.

Started also to put into parts this 1982 Martini, which was imported from Scotland. I suppose it is typical on UK 944's, since Martini's body is badly rusted. Martini was bought by a friend of mine mainly because it has a black full leather sport seats which will go to his 924 Turbo, red one, which can also seen in the picture. I am doing some minor overhaul to it. removed the wastgate because J-pipe gaskets were leaking. I snapped three studs, so i have to remove WG. btw 931 is sure a fun car to drive. It has become one of my favourite Porsche model

I suppose there was not "real" 944 Martini models. Looks like strips have been installed on this one long time ago. Can you see a set of cross drilled rear rotors in this picture [;)]
