Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

ORIGINAL: VvrooomM Mayhem - What's your ideal spec, I am considering moving mine on in the spring but it's largely going to be parked up as I'll use the other car as much as possible over the winter. Could work in both our favours as the wife wants an MX5 - it would be a good time to buy. I still have 14 months Porsche warranty. My PM doesn't work on here! Hi, I am seeking a car that has bucket seats, pdk, spyder wheels( preferably not white, as it's stable mate is white) prefer a few creature comforts personally, although understand this goes against the ethos of the car,low mileage car with Porsche service history is preferable. I would say pm me the details (is it working??)regards Stuart

You boys need to sort out how to use the quote feature better! My eyes! New page (and hopefully not a repost) new pic which kind of picks up where flat6 left off!

ORIGINAL: Andy Fagan I just had this email from Brendan our R6 RO:- Our next Club night will be held on Wed 20th Nov at the OPC in Chester, starting at 6.30pm. It will take the form of a wine tasting evening and food from a specialist Deli in Chester will provided. A raffle for charity will be held and prizes will be provided by Club Shop. Cecil, please stay at home!! [:D][:D][:D]
[:D] You'll have to ban my mate Adrian too. He got pulled out THREE times, took too prizes and then declined the third for fear of becoming unpopular[X(]. And we came together and I got pulled out once too. It was a weird night!
ORIGINAL: rob.kellock The lad could clean up!! He's best coming over to R18's quiz night... but then again, he might win that too!
Quizzes aren't my strong point you'll be glad to hear[:D] Hey, last night I forgot to have a go of the racing simulator. The guy with the fastest lap won half a day at PEC. By the time i'd looked at everything else and filled my gut i'd forgotten about that one[&o]

ORIGINAL: VITESSE Cecil,I presume the "old car" has had some "stage" make-up applied-also I am sure it was 4 Technicians who removed the engine & not engineers--engineers are members of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers ie ;like me with many qualifications-however don't encourage anybody to increase hourly rates just because it was impressive-just remember how quickly transmissions are replaced on rally cars at service halts. Sounds a bit "picky" that so apologies -good & interesting post -I wish I had realised as I would have gone-however already have 2 such mugs-so your prized prize would have been safe. You should brought the Spyder to Oulton Park on Tuesday-was originally a Porsche open pit lane day but become an open event--£119 all day but greasy in the morning-I didn't use the 924S but shared my son's Eunos what a hoot particularly when it dried out pm-virtually the track to yourself. Had many pax laps with Andy in his CaymanR.
Yeah it was a good day, I took and passed my ARDS test so can add Race Nat B to my Rally Nat B licence [:)] There was also a bit of carnage whilst I was just about to do my assessed laps in the Peugeot RCX so got full Reds and had to start all over again once track was cleared. [>:]

They were providing test drives last night. Having driven plenty of 981's and a couple of 991's I decided to try the Panamera. They asked which one. I said "any". The Panamera S E-hybrid couldn't go out because someone had damaged the tyre earlier in the day. I went out in the Panamera Diesel. It's a RWD 250HP 3 litre turbocharged V6 with 550Nm torque and an 8 speed Tiptronic S transmission. It doesn't present the same sort of look as say the Aston Martin Rapide, but from the inside and out it oozes class IMHO. Porsche seemed to derive new incarnations like a morphed 911 and the first generation Cayenne I thought was pretty ugly, whereas the current generation looks good. The Panamera seems to have the 911 in it's genes but is much better for it than the first generation Cayenne. It also looks more purposefully a 4 door than the Aston IMHO which looks contradictorily like a stretched coupe - not as bad as this Ferrari though!

Well, before I start, anyone who thinks I am comparing this to a Spyder has missed the point entirely! It's a big luxurious executive 4 door cruiser if you hadn't noticed[:D]. I didn't know what to expect. It drove smoothly and comfortably of course, but throwing it into a tight bend or roundabout didn't induce the type of body roll i'd expect in a big car with 'waft you along' suspension. It may have had PASM but I didn't check. This was bliss. The engine. It's an Audi block and I don't know how the Audi version compares (I appreciate that Audi are pioneering in oil-burners so a fair amount of credit to them of course) but this is the first diesel engine i've driven that didn't feel like one AT ALL. I have had no love for diesels whatsoever, ever. However, this engine didn't have any diesel rattle or vibration. Nor was there a gutless gap before the turbo kicked in. It accelerated smoothly and strongly throughout. Up in eighth gear, you put your foot down and in a delay shorter than it would take to press a clutch pedal and move a gear lever, the display shows 5th gear and it feels like a petrol engine response. I was very impressed. Maybe someone who has more experience with modern diesels can comment on whether they're all like this nowadays and how much credit goes to Porsche, if any, vs Audi. I wouldn't consider a diesel in a sports car though like Audi do with the TT, which I guess is for those who want the sports car look regardless of any compromises brought about by a diesel drivetrain. Not for me. Likewise, I don't know how the Tiptronic S transmission relates by its name to the Tip 'boxes in the early 997 and 987 or if Porsche has tweaked the Audi component they take on. Again, I stress this is a big executive car, not an alternative for a 911 with some more legroom in the back and more boot space. On the basis of what it is, I was very impressed indeed. Before driving it I wondered whether a car like this is just for people who wanted a Porsche badge on a car more fitting of their requirements than a sports car, but whether it was actually worthy of wearing the badge. I wanted a car for this type of purpose, regardless of the Porsche badge, it's a good car I would enjoy driving it. If the Porsche badge signifies superb engineering and driving dynamics, then it is for sure a Porsche. It's no sports car but for me to be satisfied driving this behemoth around, grabbed my attention. I drove a little box car a few weeks back and that felt like a minibus in comparison . It wallowed from corner to corner, had a driving position that was one tier down from standing up and felt very primitive and crude considering it was an all new design. I still have no interest in SUV's; big, tall, heavy, relatively small cabin space for the tonnage being hauled about, upright seating position, heavy 4x4 mechanicals for driving solely on smooth roads with sports tyres. Although i've never driven a Cayenne and maybe never will, so each to their own and I am ignorant of what they offer. However, for a family car, with long journeys required and still wanting to enjoy the drive dynamics, the Panamera was a big winner with me. I'd also have to give it some serious thought before discounting the diesel (something I thought i'd never say!) as I wouldn't have any interest in a slight variance in 10ths of a second to 60mph in a car of this purpose if choosing between the 3 base models, so the diesel is worth consideration IMHO. In terms of the current Porsche models and how they grab me within their segment, how they score for me is: 1st 991 (If I was in the market for a 991 turbo or GT3 I don't think any alternatives would even get a test drive) 2nd Panamera (If I was in the market for a big executive family car, I can't see me choosing something else. If I was considering up at the top end like the Panamera GTS or turbo, i'd put my trust in Porsche) 3rd 981 (Great car but there are some choices in that sector for me). Cayenne & Macan I don't know anything about.

Drive a Cayenne. You'd be amazed. Hassan reckons his diesel S is the best car in his fleet and by some margin. Given what's in that fleet that is some claim. Jeremy loves his Diesel too and sees it in a different league to his RR Sport and various X5s. I like Panameras from driver's and passenger's seats but if it had 5 seats there would be one on my drive. 5 series more practical for me - my kids have a Grandma and sometimes we all go out together!!

Looks like these Spyders have gone off the radar now [;)]

Good point about the 4 seats. Knowing a little of Hassan's fleet, that is some statement. No doubt the Cayenne outperforms the RR on the road (perhaps at the expense of some offroad capability? but how many take their SUV offroad anyway) but if I had the choice between the Cayenne and Panamera simply for needing 4 adult seats I reckon the car would win me over more than the SUV. There was a time when the Cayenne was the only choice of big Porsche, although, the SUV choice is popular in general though over the big exec. Maybe the Sport Turismo Concept will present a bit more a dilemma to the SUV champions? I dunno...

Just a brief update to keep you 'abreast' of things over the pond. AF now has his race licence and is considering a F1 seat for next season![;)] Well done Andy! Flat six has quit his job.[8|][8|] I did not know before but it would seem he is a lucky so and so with numbers. I thought he was going switch to accountancy but rumour has it his new career - Professional Bingo Player[;)] To quote Rob K 'Drive a Cayenne. You'd be amazed' You can tell Christmas party season has started he is also writing about 'Granny and the kids' and ' Any hen's teeth available over in the USA?' Things must be tough up North[;)] Can we club together and buy him a proper Christmas Bird?[:D]
