Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

ORIGINAL: clubsport Tks..at last a Spyder on the weigh bridge to get an idea of real world weight......About as expected, as in not really that light!....Regulations see to that. Great cars all the same![:D]
The Spyder chassis/suspension set up lower centre of gravity and weight removal where it really matters ie folding electric roof are the things thst really seperate a Spyder from a Boxster S [&o] The rest is just marketing and hype in the real world of how the cars actually feel on road or track

The roof isn't 15kg. It is just under 6kg, saving 21kg over the Boxster S roof. I don't get the logic behind the weight comparison to the Boxster S. The manufacturer states a weight for both cars. If you add back in any options the difference in weight reduces. If you add the same options on both cars the weight difference stays the same. E.g. If you add a radio into the Spyder, the Boxster already had one in its Porsche published weight - the weight difference reduces. Similarly with some other items. If you add PDK to both cars the weight difference stays the same. There are some things that are blurred such as, the Spyder is weighed without air-conditioning, saving 12kg, but if you option in the climate control, how much does that weigh vs the standard air conditioning on an S which will be included in its standard weight figure (I don't believe you can option air-con on the Spyder?). But I think most Spyder owners who have also previously owned a 987 will be more impressed with how it drives differently. I don't know how much of that is attributable to the weight saving vs the lower C of G vs the suspension changes, but for sure it drives differently regardless of whether the weight saving over an S is 80kg or 50kg. If the weight saving isn't as much as expected, then hats off to them for achieving the distinctive drive in the other changes. I think some people have a perception of the Spyder being a lightweight. 1275kg (or whatever an individual car comes out at) isn't super light imho. An Elise or 4C is what i'd consider lightweight, but that roof, aluminium body panels and tweaked suspension does make the standard boxster feel a bit lardy in comparison. And I guess a number of the other weight savings all add up but it's not as if i'd go bragging to an 'S' owner that my 54 ltr fuel tank saves 7kg. [Damn, I mentioned 4C, and you know what follows when that happens[:-] ]

Cecil I think the differences with the Spyder and CR v's the standard versions are various elements. Nobody ever mentions that the Spyder wheels give them a wider stance. It is +8mm on the front and +10mm on the rear overall. The suspension is lowered and tuned to the car and they have more power. They are lightened compared to standard models so they are bound to feel better otherwise Porsche got the mods very wrong []

How much for a 2nd year service? just been quoted £630 inc vat for my local OPC! ouch only really needs an oil/oil filter change...

By 2nd year do you mean the Spyers first service from new?

the service prices being quoted are shocking, mine needs the 4 year one, been quoted over 1k knowing my OPC a bit better they will do it for £800 !!!! thanks.... but a 4 years 3rd party service is £370 !!!! So tempting not to get it serviced at Porsche now, it will add no value come sale time with Porsche stamps but will have cost me £500 more. Don't know how they can get away charging so much. As for weight 50kg is a lot to save over another car. and 1275kg in todays market when the New jag F type is 1595kg and a 370z is 1466kg and you can add 50kgs to that easy in the real world for both it's very light for a car with 320bhp. my Spyders faster than my R in a drag race, says all you need to know regarding the weight between them. And I posted my stopping distance in my cars it's again shorter than the R. stopping another 70kg from 100mph is really going to tell on your brake performance. my aim is 1250kgs and 350bhp :)

yep first service! Only done 9k and have had 3 oil changes all ready... hmmmm maybe time to go to a specialist like RPM / Project nine ect

If I have to pay those sort of prices when I have mine serviced next year, I'll expect a better loaner than the crappy A6 they lent me when I had some warranty work done. Cheeky buggers even asked me to top up the tank before I brought it back, because it was a salesman's company car!

wont that invalidate the warranty? why not ask for a discount as a loyal customer,i did and got 10pc. but still a lot of money for basically an oil change!pcgb members have a different pricing at my local opc!

considerably cheaper than the official recommended retail servicing price

I am also thinking no warranty renewal so for 2 years that's 2k plus the £500 I will save on the service, that gives me a £2.5k slush fund and every thing is due on the R also so do the same with that, that's a £5k slush fund for both my cars. bar engine fail you need to go a long way to spend 5k on these types of car. my warranty work so far has been a £65 Clip set over the 2 years I have owned it.
