Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

Maybe they will do a Powerkit? On price, I hope for those that have been keen to buy that the balance of performance goodies v price is OK. More special bits > ££
 
I think that the tuners find it easier to piggyback the DME because they're unable to crack the Siemens coding and I'm not sure that actually replacing the DME is a viable proposition. Jeff
 
Hi Guys, In preparation of the new GT4, I had a loan car Cayman GTS last week, whilst my 997.1 GT3 was getting its warranty renewed. I had not driven a new Cayman before and I have to say the drive and exhaust sound ( PDK Box), whilst on Sport Plus was quite impressive. I understand the Manual box has the same set of tricks ??. Getting back into my GT3, made it feel quiet, compared to the PDK GTS, so the GT4 must up the anti a little from that, but will it be enough to tempt me away...... My dealer says it will be a stonking car.... Here's waiting until the 4th Feb.... and yes, the price is important, as well as, what's part of the package Cheers Charlie (Very High on the waiting list at his OPC)

no tricks to manual, you just get to use both legs/feet and get a rewarding feeling, maybe that's the trick, the rewarding feeling a manual gives you :)
 
Unfortunately Charlie I think that the only way you're going to find out if the GT4 is for you is to take the leap and buy one since you're unlikely to find a demonstrator car other than one perhaps at the PEC, Silverstone. Having driven a GTS you've got some idea what the car will be like, only more focused. I'm sure that it'll be a cracking drive and that you won't be disappointed; you'll probably be able to do a straight swop with your GT3. Jeff
 
Hi Guys, Thanks for your comments, I understood the manual box still "blipped" the throttle on down shifts ? My GT3 has 43K miles on it, so I will need to add some money to the deal..... my OPC is not interested in my car, but with a new 12 month warranty, I dont expoct it will be difficult to shift at about £62K.... I agree , it will be a little leap of faith, from one to the other, without a test drive... Charlie

981's with Sports Chrono do blip on downshifts in Sports + mode only so no reason why the GT4 wouldn't too. Would like to know why this feature isn't activated in Sports only mode[&o]

I'm very surprised that your PC isn't interested in your car Charlie. I've a feeling that you're located north of the border but you might want to speak to JZM who seem to sell a lot of GT3s via either direct purchase or on commission; although I doubt that you'll have too much trouble selling privately. As Rob says, throttle blipping on downchanges [including manual gearbox cars] is part of the Sport Chrono package. I've a feeling that this could well feature on the GT4, if only for the included dynamic engine mounts. Jeff

so you can heal and toe in sports mode, and auto blip in sports plus.

Agreed MrD. That over-run cackle really would annoy me after a few miles on the twisty bits. Presumably you don't get it if the sports exhaust is turned off though. Jeff

That looks like its has the 2 litre Turbo flat 4 [:D][:D][:D]
 
With just a day to go before we get the final GT4 spec I looked back at my original post in early November and was surprised how little we seemed to have moved on. So, where are we now? 3.8L N/A flat-6 engine producing 380PS [although that may be upped to 385PS to achieve 380 “proper” horsepower for the important US and UK markets]. A free-flowing “sports” exhaust is bound to be included in the package. 6-speed manual transmission as standard although opinion is still divided on a PDK option. Revised gearing could be required in the ‘box and/or final drive to meet performance targets. A 180mph+ performance is probable. LSD and Dynamic Engine Mounts, most probably as part of the Porsche Torque Vectoring and Sport Chrono options rather than stand-alone in order to keep costs in check. Motorsport developed suspension set-up with bespoke springs, dampers and ARBs lowered by ~20-30mm [any more could introduced clearance problems for road use] and with lightweight 20” wheels and [optional?] Cup tyres. Like the GT3, the GT4 could get PASM. 991S 6-pot front brakes. Proportional revisions to the rear brakes may be required. Revised steering rack and software in line with that introduced with the 991 GT3 to provide better steering feel/response. Revised aero featuring a fixed rear wing and a deeper front air-dam with larger air ducts and a bonnet slot to vent air from an additional central duct and coolant radiator. We’ve not seen any interior details but alcantera/leather appears to be the norm for Porsche high performance versions, so it will probably be very similar to that used in the GTS except that lightweight door panels with strap-type door pulls will probably be used. If costs allow, Porsche will fit the lightweight bucket seats; otherwise Sports Seats Plus will be fitted. As part of the weight-saving regime, radio and aircon could well be no-cost options as they were on the Cayman R in which cup holders were also deleted along with the instrument cowl. Porsche product boss Wolfgang Hatz has confirmed that Porsche will produce fully homologated GT4 race versions for customers wishing to compete in eligible events all over the world. Some of these developments could well be options in a GT4 Clubsport version available either at launch or at a later date. The biggest unknown is the price, but something around £65k seems to be favourite. Realistically, it all depends upon the base spec and how much Porsche believe they can make on their expensive options. I think that’s covered all the bases….. Jeff
