Cayman GT4: Where are we up to now?

seems posts have been removed which were personal, which is good to see. hence my removal of said quotes.

And moving on, one planet-9 GT4 owner has reported an issue with the clutch. Slight beware is that the new part has not yet been fitted so maybe something less expensive. For follow up reading, the original post is here

[blockquote]QUOTE[/blockquote][blockquote]Well, what started from just something possibly needing some lube ended up being a faulty throwout bearing. Starting from around 800 miles my car started developing this tiny squeak when it was warmed up whenever the clutch pedal was pressed all the way in and let out. That squeak eventually got really loud but recently quieted down again at 1000 miles. A first visit resulted in us discovering the noise was coming above the clutch slave or bell housing, but the tech who specializes in the GTs and Turbos wasn't there. Today's follow up visit had him do a road test and he concluded it was coming from inside the bell housing and was likely the throw-out bearing. Unfortunately Porsche doesn't supply only the throw-out bearing and instructs replacing it as a complete clutch kit so at just 1000 miles I will be getting a new clutch under warranty. The parts are being shipped via overnight from Germany so hopefully it'll arrive soon so all of this can be resolved before the holidays. On the same visit they did recall WF68 to add a grill on the air guide for the engine blower and did a DME software update. On the bright side, at least this is happening early on instead of later when they could blame it on wear and tear and deny warranty coverage on it, but you can't help but be disappointed on the initial quality of a flagship product.[/blockquote][blockquote]END QUOTE[/blockquote]

Another colour, Grauschwarz

"So my take on it is that the GT4 will have a detuned 3.8L with a power output of 380PS which will give an improvement in low speed torque over the 3.4L. The detune will most likely come from throttle body/plenum revisions and a DME remap; the exhaust system will of course be bespoke, with lower backpressure than that in the standard cars.

Finally, the price. Hopefully it'll hit the showrooms at around £65k, but maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part as well as there being some garish colours - orange and green perhaps."

Spooky huh?

Jeff, can you PM me the winning numbers for Friday's Euro Millions?

Ha!...I wish Ralph, I wish. Unfortunately, not enough foresight to get my name on the list early enough for a GT4 either.

Jeff

The weather gods are being kind to us and I'm still enjoying using my GT4. My Michelins are good but, understandably, not as good as they were in early autumn when it was warmer. I wonder if anyone has experimented with tyre pressures on the road so far? I haven't yet but I guess there will be a sweet-spot for feel and grip that is not necessarily the same pressure as the handbook states. Probably need to wait 'till spring.

A slight 'problem' that I'm having, which may well be just me, is that when I come off the throttle pedal in a hurry I often don't lift my foot high enough to switch neatly on to the brake pedal. This can be nerve-wracking and I can't fully adjust to correct this. I'd like to source a pedal cover to raise it closer to the level of my brake pedal but I'm surprised that I can't find one either at Demon Tweeks or Design 911 etc. Does anyone know of one or is there a way to adjust the pedal itself like I believe is possible on some 911s?

Hi Ian, I can't help with the tyre pressures part of your query but regarding the pedal, there are pedal cover plates which usually are in sets, thickness will vary for each make but to help you assess what thickness you need you could try using sheet rubber or plasticard ( available from model shops ) and attaching it in place on the face of the pedal using double sided adhesive tape, once you feel the thickness is as needed you can probably make a suitable single piece plate from plastic, rubber or aluminium, I have used 3mm checker plate to make plates to improve the pedal shape and position for heel and toeing in the distant past it provides a gripping surface that you can still slide your foot on as required to suit your needs.

Might not have mattered even if you did have the foresight Jeff. I showed interest a year before it was announced when it was pie in the sky my OPC I use made a huge cock up not saying which one but not impressed with customer allocation and dealings regards the GT4 its a long story but not airing it in public.

Really not impressed with the service some of us get buying cars from Porsche I have had a dozen or so Porsches and 5 from OPC.

Since my earlier discussion with Mr D I have removed my comments in the interest of unity on the forum. But, I have replaced it with some information which will be of use to members concerning how the club and forum operate, club officers are volunteers operating from home for the good of the club and it's members, it often costs them financially as well as in their own time and effort and few expenses can be reclaimed if for instance they attend a social event even at some distance and they can logically be requested or see themselves as required at a number of these which otherwise they may not attend but they all do it because we like to do something for their fellow enthusiasts, it makes no difference whether a member has the full line up of the Porsche model range for the year in their garage or a beat up 924 it is the enthusiasm of the membership which is the lifeblood of the club.

Merry Christmas to all and lets make next year with the register rendezvous a really good one.

Looks as though you're checking up on your offshore investments Ralph. Hope there are sufficient funds to finance your next 3.8 CS update..!

Good to see that Kevan and D have resolved their issue and that we're back on track.

Apparently this is RS Green? Looks good to me - there won't be many around in this colour.

Jeff

Thanks Kevan,

Some good ideas. I wondered about checker-plate and you are right about trialing thicknesses before I do anything. I had another look yesterday and the throttle is, I feel, quite low relative to the brake.

Granted the brake pedal is high and firm but I like that and can't complain. Lifting the throttle pedal should not be difficult.

Season's greetings.

Actually Ian it made me wonder if there is a stop adjustment on the brake pedal but it is nice to feel you can really push on the pedal if an emergency demands it although we're probably only talking of 3-4mm so take a look behind the lower dash something like one turn or even less on a bolt if there is adjustment may well be all it needs. Since I haven't looked at the GT4 pedals I don't know for certain if there is such and adjustment but being a more track orientated vehicle it's something I would expect.

Hi Jeff, this is a friend's car - initial feedback is that it is the best thing since sliced bread and he wants to keep it forever!

He told me the colour is "Porsche Grün" which is not quite Viper but about as close as it gets.

Happy Christmas to all fellow Cayman owners and best wishes for 2016.

Thanks for the colour confirmation Rob. Good to hear that your friend is pleased with his purchase and be sure to keep us posted on his experiences and impressions.

After the greens, here's one in orange.

Jeff

And here's something for anyone out there with a Martini stripes fetish (what was the owner thinking about....??!!).

Jeff

Some very nice GT4 shots on this link:

Here's one.

Nice bit of Photoshopping there D - hybrid GT4/3. Looks great. Particularly like the black detailing, the roof and the wheels but not so sure about those damned centre-locks..!
