New Turbo: took the plunge!

I finally saw my first Arctic Silver 997 Turbo today in the flesh (sorry didn't have my camera).

It looked amazing; so much so that it really got me thinking about contacting the factory to make a last minute order change!!

This colour thing has proven to be the trickiest decision I have made for years. Yeh yeh, I know, such a hard life I lead.

...if it wasn't such a BIG financial outlay for me then I wouldn't care so much.
 
You see Alex - I told you they looked good! I used to have a Cobalt Blue 997, and it did look good also. Don't worry tho' the next one can always be Artic[:D][:D]

all joking aside, i agree with you-my last 4 porsches artic silver, wanted a change liked cobalt blue but worried it was just colour of the moment looked at as many colours as i could,took pictures of cars liked gt silver but £1000 price tag other half didnt like gt silver,settled for bblack lot of cleaning but what the heck-bring back the good old days choices of colours available black only hard decision[:D] in those days

For what it's worth if you are bothered about paint chips the side skirts and moulding behind rear wheels (below bumper) will last no time at all if the ordinary skirts are anything to go by - the aerodynamics are such that they attact stones like flies. I think this is exemplified in that the 997 has the stick-on stone chip guard as standard behind the door. You could fit such material but I wouldn't expect it to last in this area.

Regarding the front apron - this is prone to scrapes: however hard you try there will always be a garage exit, ramped car park etc. which will catch you out. They've sort of made things better on the 997 vs. 996 but in my experience whilst you avoid touching the middle the sides are more prone to contact.

Essentially (in my view) the skirts will look great at the beginning but soon look bad cosmetically. The standard black ones hide the chips and can generally be improved wheras paint means respray.

Each to his own at the end of the day - enjoy the driving! J.

Yes, a definite concern. I did extensively play with the concept of going with a darker colour (dark olive or midnight blue) and therefore not really needing to coordinate the lower lips/bumbers/skirts.

As it stands now though I need to look into how much it will cost to 3M/Clearbra/VentureShield/etc and whether it is worth doing this.
 
The kits start from approx £500-600 and can climb to beyond 1k. It all comes down to the coverage you require. Standard cut encompasses bonnet, fron arches, lights, bumper and wheel arches however the front bonnet and arches are a partial cover meaning you will see the film edge. The way to get around this is going for a full bonnet wrap which is better.

Trouble is, they put you over a barrel over here in the UK because you can quite easily get these kits all in for a mere 250/300 quid from the states. You'll have to find someone able to apply it however but if you're an apt DIY'er you can always give them a try. There are differences between the usual 3M/Ventureshield products in that the former has a top clearcoat and protective layer in one (can't remember the proportions but something like 70:30 protection:clearcoat), while the latter is fully a protective film with no topcoat. This tends to mean that its more resilient to impacts but you may need to give it a polish once in a while (its no problem really. Been running the VS PPF for 2 years and still looks as good as when i put it down).

All in all, the peace of mind it offers when driving around is bliss. The way these cars attract stone ships is unbelieveable; you can almost count the new ones after each ride. [:(]

New to the forum. Was thinking of buying the Turbo but was recommended to go for the C4S which I did in June (Met. black / black leather 6sp-short shift) instead... Now regret a bit the extra power and wondering if I should go for the Turbo, wait for the GT2 or stick with what I have... Was told the Turbo is a bit disapointing? any Turbo S version coming soon?

Any bright ideas as to how I can connet an mp3 player to the stereo? think it is more useful that installing thr CD changer.

Look into a product called the Gateway 500 from Dension. If you do a search on here, you may find a lot more info since this is the leading solution to mp3/ipod connectivity.

Francois, I know my weaknesses so went for the Turbo first time round [;)]
I don't know how the Turbo is disappointing, perhaps against a Lambo it doesn't have the wow factor but as far as a drivers cars it excellent, for exclusivity and track day the GT3 wins, but as a everyday sports car !!? not alot to beat it.

I replaced my 997 C4S this summer with a 997 TT and have to say that in my view the turbo is in a completely different league.

What is the main difference you find between the C4S and the Turbo? what I enjoy about the C4S is the low down torque, how does it compare? the other option i'm considering is fitting the RUFF compressor? All comments welcomed...

Thanks Popolou for the Gateway 500, have you had it fitted? is it straitforward to use and can one adapt a telephone bluetooth also?

With the turbo off boost low down torque is obviously poorer than the C4S, but once the revs build and the turbo kicks in there is no comparison. The variable vane twin turbos are a significant improvement on anyone used to "standard" turbos, but there is still lag which can only be reduced (but not eliminated) by keeping the revs up.

I will leave it to others more technically minded than me to comment on the benefits of a RUF compressor.

Go for an after market Powerkit upgrade from Porache it can be fitted until 20k miles or after with an inspection and some othr component changes.

Really peps up the C4S while you are waiting for your Turbo S in about 3 years time.

 
I'd expect to see the Turbo S nearer the end of production of the 997 model run.
Maybe it will be different this time, but usually thats the case with the 'S'

Yes, unless Turbo sales plumit I would guess around 2010, about the same time as the 998 Carreras are released.
