The answer for RMS problems?

ORIGINAL: NicD
I have sent to Porsche, Mark's summary email and if you agree, your letter also.

Nic, i'll gladly agree. Please feel free to do with the letter as you wish.

Just as a point of note, got our copy of Evo through yesterday and the long term Boxster S they are running has just had it's first RMS go. Replaced under warranty but the subject is starting to get more and more publicity.

Dawn

Without trying to press the point too much, given Porsche have had time, the PCGB board have met, when do we think the members will be presented with the results of the survey? I think it's now quite important for the club to be seen to be there for the members.

Hmmm....

I said I was happy for my email to go to Porsche - not that I was happy for it to be posted publicly [;)]

Come on then, I've been embarrased with my awful "created in 2 min" thoughts - let's see the other letters![:D]

Mark

Sorry I got carried away.

There is nothing in it that I would be embarrassed about having to admit that I had written.

JCB..

The problem for Porsche as I see it is that it's not the simple matter of sourcing a better seal. For some cars I understand that the crankshaft is not correctly aligned with the seal housing in the crankcase. If that is the case rather than a simple seal failure, the solution will be costly.

If Porsche doesn't do right by this and and help us (currently) loyal owners by providing a solution that's not going to cost an arm and a leg, the consequences for Porsche are obvious in future car sales across the range after the press get after it. I hope they have thought it through.

I cant agree with you more GreigM.... I am not sure what the issue is

Why are we waiting so long?

This Technical Service Buletin (TSB) highlights the severity of the problem.

Berny,

Nice to read the TSB for the States - I wonder what the TSB for UK cars has on it (always assuming that there is one) ?!

Yes I know what you mean. But this is still an official Porsche produced document and I am told by a very good authoratative source that it would hold up legally in court. I am an author, I write computer technical books. The books are published in the US and the computer software that I write about is produced in the US. But that does not say they don't apply to the same software product sold in the UK. I would also think there would be further legal complications if this TSB was not available to the UK or didn't apply in the UK. Consider the implications if a 747 fell out of the sky because of an engine fault that is well known and documented in a TSB for the US but not the UK. So I presume it is available. But I would like toget my hands on the UK version.......and as you say, assuming there is one, but if not then they are in even deeper than they think ;-)

Well I am sick of coming here twice each day looking for these results. You finally got rid of me.

If they "ever" get posted, would some kind person please PM me and let me know.

Very disappointed.

Scouser

We are still waiting to hear the official line from Porsche.

Did you really expect them to snap to attention?

By all accounts this is just the latest in a long line of issues, over the years, that have affected various Porsche models with, despite the urban myths, the same level of intransigent apathy from Porsche.

Feel free to be disappointed, I am too, but Rome was not built in a day!

JCB..

(Still plugging away and not so eager to give up)

Can I take it that the matter was debated by the Board on Saturday last? I know the minutes will follow but in the meantime it would be nice to know if there is a 'direction' arising from that meeting.

Nic

In respect of the above I think it will help many of us if you will kindly answer my question as above please.

Thanks in anticipation.

Berny

Stick with us - we need all 'hands to the pump' on this one[;)]

Secondly I for one would like to know how you get on with your pursuit of Porsche through the courts - although I am pretty sure of the outcome even now [:)]

I am still here. Nige [;)]

First off I want to appologise to John. He's working this as best he can and it doesn't help if
loud mouth scousers like me go shouting off. I was slightly oiled when I sent that [&:] and I just
let off some steam that I shouldn't have done. Frustration took over. In hindsight John is right
....we have to give them a chance to respond. Patience is a virtue.
The main question now is how long.

I think we should also be debating what is acceptable as a solution. IMHO, its repair and warranty
for this RMS problem for both in and out of warranty cars up to an acceptable mileage. Say 100,000 miles.
That may sound a lot. But don't forget this is their fault not ours. It's a manufacturing defect that sits
latent in your car and may trigger any time. Since it's a manufactuing error they either fix it with a guaranteed
long term solution or provide the warranty as explained. But that's just MHO.

In the meantime, can I make a suggestion, why don't you all write a letter expressing your
dissatisfaction directly to Reading. It will take you no more than 10 minutes max but it could help our
cause immensly and add weight to the outcome. Be proactive rather than reactive. If your feeling
real up for it, write a similar letter to the mags.

Cheers,
PS: truly sorry John for me being an idiot.

Berny

Good to see that you are still in the fold [:D] - IMO more will be achieved from within rather than outside the Club - subject of course to all the Board working with and for members.

Not finally sure about working out the next move as yet - certainly members need to support the Board and play a part in any further input. Sight of the inhouse material (survey, minutes etc) will be helpful, thereafter what Porsche understand the problems to be - always two sides to a coin.

Included within my letter to the Board I suggested questions that we need to have answers to in order to make judgements -

1. What in the opinion of Porsche are the reason/s for the premature failure of RMS in engines used within the 986 and 996 models?
2. In percentage terms how many cars are affected?
3. What was the design life of the RMS in terms of years and mileage?
4. Are Porsche able to say that the failure of the RMS is through any particular use / abuse by owners and if so what are the circumstances?
5. What is their guidance to OPC's in respect of replacement / alternative repair policies within and outside warranty periods?
6. Is it correct that Porsche replace affected engines in some parts of the world as part of their warranty / goodwill and if so is there a difference in their policy for UK owners?
7. Do they envisage extending the warranties provided on the range of their products and if so when?

Not sure an answer (or any) would be forthcoming to many of the questions (should the Board pose them) but if we do not ask we will not know.

Therafter what we feel is fair and reasonable in terms of Porsche responsibilities towards their consumers etc. with of course advice from Independent Engineers in order that we can argue from a position of strength and through the courts if necesssary.

Can I ask when we may see the results of the survey....surely the members who contributed deserve this by now?

I believe that we are expecting a response from Porsche at the end of the month.

I know it's dragging on but we did agree that Porsche be given the chance to respond before we went public.

JCB..

Fair enough, but I feel this should be their last chance to go public before the results are published...people out there are still paying for RMS repairs.

Sorry but publishing the survey results will not automatically makes things right. We as a Club have decided a stratgey and are working though this. I am not happy about the speed but cannot find the fast button.
We are in for the long haul, I hope you are also.

And, as I said in the beginning this Club approach does not preclude anyone from taking individual actions as they see fit.
