The modifications continue - Manthey coilovers incoming...

I’m not familiar with the TracTive offerings but they look like serious fully adjustable coil-overs in the KW mould, etc., and therefore could be more suitable for track use rather than fast road driving.

I would think that something like the Bilstein B4 or B6 Damptronics would be a better [safer?] bet for your requirements, and since Bilstein are Porsche’s OE supplier probably they’d be more in tune with your CGTS’s chassis from the start?

Maybe you should contact Chris at Centre Gravity to get some experienced guidance?

A friend in R24 is also looking for a similar refresh on his 997.2 with PASM after experiencing a front damper leak, so I’ll let you know what he’s decided as and when. Someone who responded to his post has fitted some B4 Damptronics with positive results:

Thank you both. Being lucky enough to live with easy access to the Yorkshire moors, Dales and further north west, most of my fun driving is on fairly bumpy roads. More tarmac rallying than track! So I want to keep the standard ride height and greater suspension travel which has meant that I have not had any issues with grounding. Normal is fine for comfort on motorways etc. Whilst Sport+ does tighten up control a bit, it does not really go far enough and I would like to take this a stage further. Perhaps the solution is to stick with Bilstein and add a DSC box.

I think the fun part is working out what best suits the use you put the car to. It is really helpful to hear the different approaces and experiences on here.

(Incidentally, we got the Yaris with the circuit pack which gave us the locking diffs and other useful bits, but also with track orientated suspension. Consequently it gives a wild ride on the moors, bouncing from one bump to another and leaving occupants wishing they had full harnesses!! )
 
I am late to this but really pleased that the KW shocks are going well and am not surprised.

They really transformed 981 GT4, making the higher speed ride more firm but fluid. They have helped give me more confidence with my hillclimbing too. I have recently uprated my springs (with input from Manthey) to 20kg/mm higher at each end (now 80/100) but same shocks, just a mod to rebound. It's disappointing to read the news on the price though - as these cars start to behave normally and depreciate - v. few are going to be willing to go full MR and benefit from its R&D out of the box.

I've been so pleased with them that my 4RS will have the huge luxury applied ot it too (just shocks and brakelines) and my 981 GT4 MR will be going up for sale later in the Summer.

Have you experimented with the bump/rebound settings or just gone with MR settings (as I have done).

Hi Snowy :)

I'm on the supplied settings for now, and plan on staying on them for the rest of the year. That way I can try them out on a variety of circuits and roads, then I'll have a ponder over winter as to whether I feel I need to change anything. I suspect the standard "Nurburgring" settings are a happy medium for UK roads and 5 or 6 track days a year.

Congrats on the GT4RS by the way!
 
Thank you. It's a big step financially from a car that I really love but the chance to spec one (without Weissach package which I just really don't like), have a manufacturers warranty (inc. covering the MR shocks) and run it in myself came up and I therefore have jumped at it.....
 
A manual with slightly longer gearing might calm it down a bit, which would suit me just fine!

Although, truth be told, the regular GT4 (especially with the MR coilovers) is more than enough car for me and my use. I personally don't need faster, or the finance albatross round my neck ;)
 
So, Silverstone PCGB track day yesterday - the first outing on track for the coilovers. The car is LOW and looks like it should be rubbing the arches at the rear but it doesn't appear to be doing so, which is odd. I'll get it checked out next time it's on a ramp or when I have a spare weekend to whip the rear wheels off.

The car feels brilliant to drive now. High speed stability is much improved, as is understeer. The car can hold a tighter line and I feel I can get on the power earlier exiting corners. I was running a similar (fairly average) pace to a mate of mine in a standard PDK GT4 all morning, then after lunch he got a few tips on lines from another mate and he was then a bit quicker than me. I got the same line tips from the same mutual mate and in the words of the PDK GT4 driver (who was following me) - "you just cleared off!". All credit to the car, it handled what was thrown at it with ease.

Oulton Park is next Tuesday, also with the Club, which I know well and love driving round so I'm really looking forward to seeing how the car goes there :cool:
 
They are very, very good - I understand now why TDT has been raving about them!

The other aspect I forgot to mention is stability under heavy braking. The usual Cayman "waggle" of quite a loose rear end is now a very slight wriggle instead. Very impressive and it helps to keep the car stable when trailbraking and turning in. Very confidence inspiring, which is the best way I can describe the setup in all conditions actually. There was torrential rain on the way to the circuit and usually on Cup2s I would not be happy as the car previously felt loose. Not any more, it felt rock solid.

It's such a shame the price has gone to what it has, who the hell is going to buy the coilovers in the UK now?

I would fit the SSR ones which are the same as your ones. 7500euro's for the 3 way V4's. MR has gone daft esp the 4RS ones at £17k
 
Glad you like them, it's a big investment. Whoever buys my car thru RPM when I get my 4RS is going to enjoy them! The stability they provide is amazing.
 
Yep, it's night and day once you get on circuit with them. I'm really looking forward to attempting to get my driving skills up to a level where I can feel I do the car justice! 😁

A further update...

Tuesday was a PCGB track day at Oulton Park, I circuit I know pretty well and one I was really keen to try the coilovers out on. The weather was fabulous, and other than one red flag for geese on the circuit(!) the circuit was open all day. I used my usual full tank of petrol in the morning and another one in the afternoon, so I certainly got a good feel for the car as it now is.

Oulton Park is very varied with some higher speed parts, some elevation, some heavy braking etc and the car felt absolutely fabulous to drive. It's really flat in the corners and damping is really well controlled over the crests and bumps. I was super confident in the abilities of the car and felt really comfortable driving the wheels off it all day! 😁

Due to a slight mix up with the initial installation, the car was set up too low and at Oulton I got tyre rub on the rear arches. It seems there are several variations of "Manthey setup", and multiple ride height settings with different reference points, and even though my OPC spoke with Manthey while the work was being done it seems their instructions weren't 100% clear. Anyhow, after speaking with our very own TDT, and doing a little bit of research myself, my OPC currently have the car again to adjust the ride height and also re-do the geo to my preference now that the shocks and springs have settled. I'll then be all set for Donington Park with the Club in September.

I'm looking forward to getting the car back and hopefully enjoying it on the road over what I hope will be an August with decent weather!
 
Cheers Ralf. I've been a passenger in a GT4RS on track several times now, and while the car is faster due to the mega engine, I felt it was too much for the Cayman chassis. My mate who owns the RS loves the playful character and wild ride of it, I personally prefer a car that's more locked down. You pays yer money and you takes yer choice...

Re. the RS aero I know a couple of people who have them fitted and I'd do the same but my early car doesn't have the pre-drilled locating spots for them like the later cars do. Yes, I know they're easy to add, but I also have a lot of speed bumps my way which I'm already concerned about once I have the coilovers fitted! I'll see how I go with the standard aero first and maybe add them later.

And for road use my car is my replacement sportsbike, and my wife (also an ex-sportsbike owner) drives a Focus RS mk3, so we're both used to shall we say a firmer ride! It's not a daily driver so I can probably live with it with a couple of clicks knocked off the adjustable damping :)
What year did the drilling parts become standard?
