what did you do to your 944 today

Changed oil and filter and gave a good wash , putting to bed for the winter now, sadly . Or maybe the odd sneaky drive if the weather's dry and sunny .

ORIGINAL: geoffbateman Eventually got the clutch out. It would have been nice if the manual had mentioned the earth lead connected to the top of the clutch cover housing that you can't see. This provided quite some amusement, eventually twisting the cover allowed me to get to it with a combination of extension bars and a universal joint. Sadly the flywheel speed sensors were totally seized in their housing and will need replacing as they got damaged during removal of the housing. The clutch plate was the original (136,000 miles) and the torsional damper was totally sheared. There is a 3 sector dog in the centre of the plate which still allows drive after the damper has sheared and that's what was allowing the 30 degrees or so of backlash and the clunking when dropping the throttle on tothe overrun. Good news is the gearbox, torque tube and driveshafts all seem fine so at least that's a bonus. I've re-routed some of the engine harness which was wound round the heater hose at the back of the head which has improved access to that area for the reassembly which will start in a couple of weeks as I'm off to Iran for a few days.
If you don't mind taking a hacksaw to the bellhousing, cut it to join the holes up so the tdc sensors can left in place, takes one more headache/finger ache out of re-assembly or if you ever need to pull it apart again.

My drivers side window came off it's runners and started rising at a very wonky angle a few weeks ago. Removing the door card showed that a plastic lug had snapped off the 'scissors' in the window mechanism. A quick call to Simon at http://www.essentialstyling.com yielded a replacement mechanism for £20. Today I tried to fit the damned thing but after an hour or so of struggle I gave up and merely transferred the plastic lug from the new to the old 'scissors'. A quick clean and regrease of all the gears and sliders in situ and my drivers window can now lower and rise again before the passenger side has even lowered. Guess what I need to clean and regrease next week? [:D]

Collected the car from RPM - drove around for approx 150 miles. Listed below are some of the the things they worked on: 1. Replace thermostat 2. Re pipe (a few) pipes (I think that makes sense?) 3. Replaced washer bottle and repair washers 4. Replace expansion tank 5. Replace leaking coolant hose 6. Bleed and fill coolant system 7. Change PAS belt 8. Rebush front ARB 9. clean up underneath and wax oil

edited to add: Sorry about the lame picture folks.

cleaned and polished and put her away for the winter. i'll bring her out on sunny dry days over the coming months, but other than that, just a bit of cleaning and polishing so she looks tip top for spring.

Fitted anti roll bar bracing to the front bar, i was going to adjust height on the front but struggled with the C spanners we had, will try again when we have the correct size. Gave the 220 a qucik run i am going to refit the new functioning dash clock tomorrow.

In contrast to Deafasapost and Peugeot, my 944 T came out of the garage today after 6 months of fettling at JMG, so I'm looking forward to some winter fun in it. I've missed the summer, so can hardly now put it away until the Spring. New tyres have been fitted, so bring on the snow!

Lol I hope you don't live to regret that. 944s and snow are not a great mixture. Mine usually stays on the drive when the white stuff is about.

Fantastic news [:D] We expect plenty or driving reports, engine bay pics and the obligatory Dyno sheets when you get them [8D] (all in a new thread of course)

Working clock courtesy of Sulzeruk now fitted in the 220 which embarassed me today at the petrol station with a flat battery, this is now on charge, sitting at the top of the drive as it's garage is getting a new roof and floor, should be tucked up snug again by the weekend.

repaired the plastic attachments for the central locking so now fully functional (drilled a small hole through and nut/bolted) replaced a couple of blown dash bulbs, took for a sunday run while the weather is good!!

ORIGINAL: Hairyarse Dont worry about the miles Simon, it's well looked after, that's all that matters! They are surprisingly comft on a long jounrey, the only thing that hurts for me is my arms with no power steering, guess you have the same?
Hmm, sounds like your steering might be a tad heavy then. Having said that, i'm used to driving cars without powered steering so maybe I'm used to it. i'll have to do that back-to-back check for you to make sure nothings wrong.
ORIGINAL: Copperman05 I think you're right Edd. The more I get used to the car and the more it becomes 'mine' the less worried I've become about mileage and fuel.
Besides, the fiesta is back from the Hospital so the Porsche can have a rest from daily duties. I think I'll treat it to a nice deep clean, clay and wax. The Rover is in the hospital now. Should be fixed soon [:)]

Would appreciate that sometime, I'm sure your gear change is slicker than mine too! I could just be showing my age though[:D]

Not just today more this week. MOT'd it for another year of advisory free motoring. Then drove it like I stole it. All the way to Elliot's place to pick up the door check strap, which I have been meaning to pick up for months. While I was there I had a chance to check out Elliot's recently purchased Turbo S, which is absolutely stunning!!!!! More getaway driving to Eurocarparts to pick up a DME coolant sensor because the emissions were somewhat richer on idle this year from last. Won't be fitting it today though as the weather is bloody miserable [:(] Did manage to fit the check strap though and sort out the rear fog lights, which were noticed as being very dim on the MOT. Just a bit of white corrosion on the backing plate of the rear light cluster. A quick set to with some emery cloth and all is good again. Has anyone seen the new MOT certs by the way? No green cert anymore just plain A4 paper from the garages printer. Surely this can't being doing much to deter forgery??? [&:]

I've heard of those. I presume the thought process is that you would check the DVLA database online if you want proof of an MoTs authenticity.

Having talked to the Garage owner Simon I think the thought process is to save the DVLA money having to send out blank MOT certs by courier.

Haha, that too! Cost cutting is everywhere nowadays.

Got the MOT for the Passat yesterday and the new receipt i was told, looks crap, though the advisories are printed on it rather than seperately which can be discarded which is a good thing as you can ask what has been sorted if you were in a buyers position. Cost saving i am not so sure about as the DVLA is now sending out new stylee V5 docs to owners with older docs ?
