what did you do to your 944 today

I used to average around 3,000 miles a month when I worked for EMC, which was enough (Although I also managed a couple of 1500+ mile weeks)! I took the generous car allowance and used to run SAAB 9000's, buying them at 80-100k and running them up to 160k

1600 in 5 days is a lot! Most I've done in a working week is about that, when I was doing 55k a year which I did for 4 years. That was business miles in a van, plus a few k in my car. Back down to my lifetime average of 35k (plus private cars) at the moment. I reckon I should complete 1 000 000 sometime soon!

I did over 25,000 in the 944 one year, and have on a couple of occasions done 1000 miles in a day. The first year I had my A6 I did close to 40k miles, but that has eased a bit to around 80,000 in 3 years. This year I have done very few so far, zero 944 miles and probably a couple of thousand in the A6. I did do a very fast Inverness to home trip in the coupe after a days work at Kinloss around 10 years ago. Tony

Many moons ago I drove from Portsmouth to northern Italy in a day in my S2 engined 944S. Lying, shattered, on my hotel bed I calculated my average speed as 110mph. It was in the days before the French and Italian police took such a dim view of speeding Brits. Unlike going to Le Mans these days. Fitted the wheel arch stone guards today, along with the rear Porsche decal and the rear Turbo badge. So my car is, in effect, finished (for now). Just need to pluck up the courage to apply the front wing Turbo badge...

Today I have been mostly damaging my car. After taking advantage of the nice cold air/boost, my car developed some loud expensive sounding noises from the back end when rolling. Typically I havn't got around to sourcing/putting new bearings in the other transaxle yet.

3 years ago? I did a couple of trips to the N ring and Spa in my red turbo, the last 30 mins or so up to the Nurburgring are limit free motorways ,I did a few minutes at 130 mph plus non stop, you could feel that these cars were just designed to sit at high speeds on Autobahns. Needless to say I was at the hotel first and sank quite a few Bitburgers (German frothy ale) before the group got there,it made a bad first impression (I didn't know anyone it was an organised N ring trip) they all thought I was a nutty driving alcoholic...[:D] Drove quite a few fast miles over 3 or so days on roads ,at the ring and Spa,burned a lot of fuel. Happy days, really want to vist Stuttgart Porsche museum in a 944 next....[8|]

One of my thousand mile day trips was Belgium to Vilnius in Lithuania (nissan patrol) and the second driving from France to just south of Madrid and then on to Gibraltar again in the Patrol - would love to do that trip in a 944 there are some really good empty roads in the middle of Spain. Been to Stuttgart via the Nurburgring in the 944 on the Euro GT with the 944 register, excellent trip! Went to Stuttgart last year in the Audi wish I had the 944 then too but the fuel range and cost put me off, the Audi was still doing close to 30mpg at 140 and has a bigger tank, 1 stop each way.

thats annoying - if you had it would have lasted years!

Spot on Mark. A few years ago I had my S2 some way over 140 for around 20 minutes and was amazed at how stable and responsive it was at that speed. The only sensation of speed was the blur through the windows and the twist on the dials. I seem to recall that the sunroof was removed as well, and the buffeting in the car was minimal. (I was also amazed at how quickly you cover ground at that speed - stupid to say, but true. I was also amazed at how quickly that made it it guzzle the juice ... ) Oli.

fitted a Momo competition 350mm wheel today and what a difference it has made to how it responds to steering, forgotten how a smaller wheel makes a car feel better.Recommend to anyone.Took me back to old days when I auto test minbins. Nick [:D]

blimey oli ..your balls must be [****THIS****** .] big [;)] I'd need a lot of brave pills to take my old gal up to 140mph .. A crash at 60mph you might survive but at 140mph there wouldn't be anything left to scrape up ...[:D][:D][:D] I came off the M5 at 100mph once and overshot the end of the sliproad. ! ploughed into some foliage and rough ground. Needed a change of underwear that day. Its amazing how speed lulls you into a false sense of security and how easily you can misjudge the speed you are doing.

Nick, Nice of you to say so. I'd need to confirm the exact dimensions with Mrs zcacogp to be sure ... The answer is, don't crash! A well-maintained car, on a clear open road, on a dry morning ... and a risk I thought was worthwhile. Hey, you can get killed by an idiot driving dangerously on a motorway at 70mph ... the way I did it, if something had gone wrong I would only have had myself to blame! Oli.

I wasn't critisizing Oli ...I am impressed actually. I might have engaged in such foolhardyness when I was your age but now I am old and sensible (anxious and boring) my sense of self-preservation seems to dominate everything these days. [&o] The riskiest thing I've managed lately is answering Mrs Peanut back [:D]

My answer was clearly badly worded - I didn't take your comment as criticism! (Mind you, I wouldn't dare answer Mrs zcacogp back ... your bravery is clearly greater than mine ... although we may not be comparing like with like here!) Oli.

we are talking about a 3rd Dan blackbelt judo exponent here gulp....Mrs P was once a personal bodyguard to celebs and had her own dojo (training class) teaching self defense. She used to do demonstrations all over the UK We were at a local village fair a few years back and the local judo club had an exhibition. The top bloke was calling people out of the crowd to try some throws on them and made the mistake of asking Mrs P (who was then 50 yrs old and a 5'6" blonde.) We were all captivated as Mrs P spent the next 10 minutes throwing this 6'0" 200lb bloke all around the mat . He didn't know what had hit him. Oli when I say ' I do as I'm told'........ I say 'how high would you like me to jump my little petal '? [:D]

Got it started!!!! I am so excited but there is no-one at home to celebrate with except the dog, I don't think he realises the full enormity of the situation but he's doing his best to join in. It still won't be able to come to Rutland, the seats are in my study and I have to go into the office tomorrow so an MOT etc in time doesn't seem likely, and much as I want to bring it, it has not run for almost a year so I think a few hours up ad down the A1 in one go may be a bit optimistic. At least I can book it into RPM for the belts, brakes and KW kit that has been sitting on their shelves for the last year!

Changed the steering UJ today, I've only had it 10 months since it was an advisory on last year's MOT! Also cleaned and polished the windows and ran her up to temperature on the drive. Going to put some sealant on the windows tomorrow and give her a wash and seal too.

Big relief! turned out to be the handbrake springs making a bid for freedom. All fixed and rolling again in under an hour. Just coincedence the noise started after a spirited pull away.
